49ers lose Mario Manningham to torn ACL

Mario+Manningham+New+York+Giants+v+San+Francisco+MPBANVx1-zcl Getty Images

In addition to suffering a blowout loss to the Seahawks, the 49ers have suffered a significant loss to their receiving corps.

Wide receiver Mario Manningham tore his ACL and PCL Sunday night in Seattle, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports. That obviously means Manningham won’t play in the playoffs, and a torn ACL this late in the year could affect Manningham into the 2013 season as well.

That hurts for San Francisco: Manningham is second on the team with 42 catches and third on the team with 449 receiving yards. Manningham will be the second 49ers receiver to go on injured reserve this month, following Kyle Williams.

With Manningham out, the 49ers will likely get Randy Moss more involved in the offense. Rookie A.J. Jenkins, the first-round draft pick who has yet to catch a pass this season, will also be asked to step up for a 49ers team that suddenly looks like it may be reeling heading into the playoffs.

Ouch. A.J, you need to step up now. The staff has groomed you. At least thats my hope. Do what LaMichael has started to do for Kendall in his early stage and pick up some slack. Vernon should be back after gettin blasted, legally, by Chancellor and I hope the Cowboy’s injury isn’t too serious because his absence was more than felt.

Karma, should not have ripped Cleveland in free agency.

  7. packerpauly says: Dec 24, 2012 9:42 PM

Sorry to see Manningham out. He’s been a decent wideout since his days in the Big Apple. Here’s hoping that the 49ers have him back for the 2013 opener.

Seattle did a number on the 49ers on Sunday Night. Vernon Davis with a head-jarring concussive hit, Manningham out for the season, very likely Justin Smith will be out until the playoffs (possibly after playoffs), Kendall Hunter torn achilles tendon……when it rains it pours!

Seahawks fan here..I loved the physical, passionate play yesterday, but I hate to see guys go down with injuries, no matter what helmet they have on.

I’m sick of all the unnecessary talk between SEA and SF fans. Let’s both be glad that we are a million miles away from where we were about 4 years ago. This rivalry has the juice to be good for a decade plus.

  12. John A. says: Dec 24, 2012 9:49 PM

Why not Ted Ginn, Jr.? He’s a former 1st rounder and a wide receiver.

Oh….. that’s right… he’s too busy fumbling punts and kicks and making bonehead decisions.

Never know when a practice squader may have to step up….

  20. 2difshoe says: Dec 24, 2012 10:03 PM

Pats and Seattle look pretty tough to beat now.
Cannot rule out Peyton in Denver, but with all the injuries, the playoff run looks interesting.

Except for my Bears, if they somehow get in, they are going to be the 99 lbs weakling.

  21. olyhawk says: Dec 24, 2012 10:03 PM

The only reason SF gets the Division is because they tied the rams, its a .5 game lead. Joey49er should swallow his pride and lick his wounds, the niners got spanked.

    Hey Joey,
49rs “won” in SF; Seahawks “beat” down SF yesterday.

Sorry for the injuries to your team (which was the point of the posting). It may be hard to get to the big game without these fellows……In fact, based on all things considered SF would likely lose to GB big time right now.

    Go Seahawks!

  28. oreo51 says: Dec 24, 2012 10:22 PM

Hell Vikings smashed you. NFC West belongs to the Hawks, and you guys got exposed for the paper tigers you are. Anthony Davis is a punk, and showed your teams true yellow colors yesterday trying to fight our 5th string corner who wasn’t looking. 38. billb49 says: Dec 24, 2012 11:22 PM

I haven’t seen an NFL player blatantly throw a shoulder into a knee like that in a long time. Pretty dirty play. The Seahawks put a serious beat down on the Niners, no doubt about it. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Niners secondary doesn’t forget that play. The Seahawks are chirping about some imaginary put-down in the parking lot. The Niners have something real to remember – a starting receiver getting speared in the knee to end his season right before the playoffs. Sidney Rice, Doug Baldwin and company, watch your knees the next time you’re playing the Niners.

Physically, emotionally, and on the scoreboard — destroyed. And all on a national stage during the holiday weekend when *everyone* was watching.

That’s gonna have some echoing effects into the postseason for sure.

Hate to see injuries though. The best rivalries are healthy rivalries.

  56. southpaw77 says: Dec 25, 2012 4:07 AM

So both Jacobs and Manningham wont help a bit down the stretch or playoffs. Even Moss is a small help so their free agent signings didn’t work.

Shoulda took the cash they gave those 3 and signed Mike Wallace like I said in the summer.
Put Mike Wallace in there with Kappy, Gore, Davis and Crabtree they’d have something.

As a Niners fan I dont see them going all the way with the lack of receivers after Crabtree and without that 1st round bye.

  57. bestcoast7 says: Dec 25, 2012 4:40 AM

Did a Seahawks fan say SF will fade back into irrelevancy? 5 Super Bowls. What do you have? Talk about a top 5 irrelevant NFL franchise you got goin on there. And SF on the verge of another division crown. I’d feel on top of the world if my team beat SF too. Unfortunately for you guys there’s an actual SB to be won. We will search for 6 while you search for 1. And how many years have you had a franchise? But hey at least you have the best xfl jerseys in the NFL!

  58. allidoiswin55 says: Dec 25, 2012 5:46 AM

Anyone saying that injury resulted in a dirty play is a MORON.! Good defenses swarm to the ball to try and gang tackle as well and dislodge the ball (which happened) and was a great defensive play.

Have you ever played football in your life? Please stop begging or not picking bc ur team got beat in all areas of the game. They were out of it mid 1st qtr.

Your team gets a unfair rep because everyone loved the niners as a child but your ” New Dynasty” has been non existent and not earned. You’ve only been good for a year. Yess your team is physical, controls the clock with a potent and smash mouth run game, good consistent special teams and great defense. FACTS are the HAWKS are the same exact team but you being unwilling to admit it is providing this huge chip on their shoulder and is why your team got hit and smacked around by them all game (JUST LIKE THE FIRST GAME) 9ERS won that game ask goldson if was ran over a cpl times? Ask Kap of his only run/play resulted in him folded and mildy concussed on the goal line. YESS Gore beasted but your LB’s were RAN over too unlike those gaping whole the hawks rookie MLB left for GORE.

HAWKS fans respect 9’ers but laugh at your delusional ideals. This game was exactly what you needed to open your eyes. They Both can ball. Now you come back down to earth and the League saw the Hawks coming out party.

Don’t know who goes further in playoffs both teams have a legitimate shot. Sorry you read your news clippings and didn’t know what was going on in your own division.

    Go Hawks

    Merry Christmas!

It’s week 17 and the guy has 42 catches for 449 yards. That does not constitute a “significant” loss. Why does the media love this guy so much? I remember hearing in the offseason how Manningham was “weapon” that would make the 49ers offense dangerous. Again, 449 yards receiving after 15 games. That’s just under 30 yards per game. Quite a “weapon,” guys.

  63. sacaypaga says: Dec 25, 2012 7:54 AM

  66. worldchampsbaby says: Dec 25, 2012 9:25 AM

Sorry (sincerely) SF fans,I believe you’ve seen the last of Manningham. He tore both his ACL and his PCL. ACL alone,he would be back next year at some time. The PCL is a thicker, shorter ligament that typically does not respond as well to surgery.ACL’s are a slam dunk, almost 100% respond. On the other hand PCL’s are less predictable.Repairing both lessens the chances of a successful outcome. If he does return it probably won’t be until 2014.

Always hurts to lose a starter. ‘Hawks just plain whooped the 49ers…in 1 game. Hawks are still just a wild card team and the 12th man will not come into play in the playoffs as they’ll be lucky to gain a home game in the post season. Congrats on the impressive win, but tap those brakes. I won’t be surprised if the Rams come in and steal one next week. They are undefeated in the division…just sayin’…

The injuries hurt i would question anyone who goes that low and hits someone in the knee like that but oh well whats done is done. I think this loss hit home with the niners and they are not happys with that peformance and will come out with something to prove.

All you 49er fans talk about your superbowls. The fact that you have a few in your organization doesn’t account for it being almost 20 years since your last one. Those superbowls you won, while they were great, will not help you win another. It’s not like you’ve got a vet on the 1994 team still playing. The Seahawks and 49ers are going to be fun to watch for a long time, because the players and fans genuinly dislike eachother (on the football field)

  76. hawks1124 says: Dec 25, 2012 11:55 AM

Seattle has been to the Superbowl in recent memory….SF hasn’t seen a Superbowl since the mid 90’s…

Seattle has dominate the WEST since we got to this division. You guys have won 2 Div. title in the past 10+ years?? (2002/2011) Seattle has won 5 Div titles in that period.

You celebrate division titles while we celebrate 5 rings. But hey at least you’re happy :DDDD

49er fans calling anyone else dirty, lol, and it isn’t 1994, You’re not relevant like the steelers, packers, or giants or any decent team. You’re mirror images of the crappy cowboys, nobody fears the niners when it matters anymore. It’s ok put on your Vanilla Ice cd, drink some Pepsi Crystal, and try to think your team didn’t get beat like Nancy Kerrigan, while you live in the past.

and the ‘hawks have done what? ever?

Its kind of funny how some of you are literally going in circles with your argument and still no valid point to what is going on in the present. Come on people the past is the past let it go

Brutal. That injury looked bad in real time and even worse when they showed the slow motion replay. Can’t say that as a lions fan I didn’t love watch SF get demolished. I’ll be pulling for Seattle in playoffs!!

    Also happy holidays to all!
