Nick Foles suffers broken hand, Vick expected to start vs. Giants

Michael Vick, Nick Foles AP

Nick Foles‘ season has come to an end.

Foles, the rookie quarterback who became the Eagles’ starter after Michael Vick suffered a concussion and then remained the Eagles’ starter even after Vick was cleared to return, has suffered a broken hand. As a result, Eagles coach Andy Reid confirmed today, Foles will miss Week 17.

Although Reid didn’t say that he will definitely go back to Vick for Sunday’s season finale against the Giants, he did say that he is leaning toward starting Vick over the Eagles’ other quarterback, Trent Edwards. Sunday’s game is expected to be both Reid’s last as the Eagles’ coach and Vick’s last as the Eagles’ quarterback.

Vick starting may make the Eagles a more dangerous opponent for the Giants, who need to win on Sunday and get help in the form of the Cowboys, Bears and Vikings all losing in order to make the playoffs.

Reid said that Foles played through the entire second half of Sunday’s loss to the Redskins with the broken hand, and Reid said he was impressed with Foles’ toughness in playing well through the pain.

That’s called giving Vick an audition for a team next year.

    Trent Edwards wants an explanation!

  3. brintfatre says: Dec 24, 2012 12:18 PM

I hope he gets hot! He needs to end Eli’s season so we don’t have to spend the post season hearing about a possible Manning bowl in New Orleans…

He’s lucky he didn’t break more in that brief, dangerous tenure.

Now watch Vick go crazy on them like 2010

  6. goatcheez says: Dec 24, 2012 12:21 PM

Am I insane to now be leaning towards picking the Eagles over the Giants next week? I just have this feeling Vick is gonna come back and light the Giants up.

The Eagles are an embarrassment to the NFC East. Enjoy the basement for years to come.

This football stuff is getting in the way of Vick’s social life.

Pretty sure teams are content with the near 100 games of film they’ve got on Vick, including ten this season.

redskins arent any better, teams will expose rg3 like they did cam this year, and at least the eagles have their 1st round picks the next few years too

  13. trbowman says: Dec 24, 2012 12:30 PM

Dumb decision. Vick isn’t coming back. You had Trent Edwards signed to an extension through next year. Give him a shot and see how he performs in a pinch (probably not well).

Reid will be gone though, so he’s got no reason to care. Plus he probably wants to end his tenure with a win – turning to Trent Edwards would ensure that likely won’t happen.

  14. trbowman says: Dec 24, 2012 12:32 PM

    Go Giants.

I suppose one more implosion on film by the human turnover machine might lessen the chances of the Bills signing him.

Eh, who am I kidding? It’s the Bills.

  15. moneey31 says: Dec 24, 2012 12:37 PM

More bad coaching. So your telling me you allowed your QB to play the second half in a very winnable game, with a broken hand??? Was I the only one watching in closing moments thinking that if Vick was in, he would just run for the touchdown, or the threat of him running would open up a receiver in the end zone. The Eagles desereved to lose for not making the switch. Foles threw a ball in the dirt that would have been a game tying touchdown to a wide open Maclin, who ran a corner route in the endzone. Nothing against Foles but a QB does need his hands to throw the ball effectively and if he was hurt, he should have allowed his WAY more than capable backup to come in and win the game

    Give me a second.

You mean Nick Foles, the guy who is 6’6, 240 pounds. The guy who is 10x more durable than Vick, gets rid of the ball quicker because of his incredible football IQ, started five games and is now injured and out for the rest of the season?? If Vick is injury prone, what is the great Nick Foles?

    ———————————————————-

I beg to differ, Cam simply has film on him now. Defensive Coordinators adjusted to the Panthers and how they used Newton. The same will happen with RG3. I think they are both young studs. RG3 may be more accurate than Cam but is he as durable? Cam’s huge frame can take the beatings that come running the option, RG3 is not built the same way and if he keeps taking shots, he’ll find out the same thing Mike Vick found out, he better learn to throw the ball away or he wont be healthy very long

And yet, theyre both putting up far better numbers than Luck. Cam has been killing it the last 6 weeks.

We’re really worried about 2 draft picks. Remember who got Cousins in the 4th and Morris in the 6th? Yawn.

  24. realfootballfan says: Dec 24, 2012 12:55 PM

At least now Eagle fans and the front office, whoever that may be, can get out of the illusion of Foles as anything but a capable backup. He’s Bobby Hoying all over again, and it will be interesting to see if they pull the trigger on another young QB at the top of the draft again.

There is 1 game left in the “rest of the season” there genius. It’t not like Foles is out for a month or 2

I dont get the hate for foles ive have seen enough to give him another shot next year with a MUCH better O line…kid almost tied the game with a broken hand …yea he missed the one to maclin but came right back and our great coachin staff puts in a 5th string TE in n drops a touchdown…and there is no qb in this draft that I want …alex smith no thanks and matt flynn really ill stick with foles…as for the idiot sayin the eagles are a joke for the nfc east …sounds like a redskins fan let him have his glory its been a long time

  27. sdelmonte says: Dec 24, 2012 1:31 PM

This sort of confirms that the Giants will lose. Vick will find one last cup of magic and run roughshod over my team, just because it will hurt that much.

  28. skinsgal4life says: Dec 24, 2012 1:46 PM

If Vick plays, the Giants actually have a chance to win their last game. They’ve looked horrible the last two weeks.

  29. dolphins4 says: Dec 24, 2012 1:46 PM

With the Eagles starting O-line on injured reserve and the likes of King Dunlap and Dennis Kelly blocking for them it’s lucky the Eagles didn’t go through 10 QBs this year.

  30. east96st says: Dec 24, 2012 1:52 PM

As much as it disgusts me, it’s better for NY to NOT make the playoffs. Last two weeks has shown that a number of guys have reached the end of their careers. You get old fast in this game and once it’s gone, it ain’t coming back. Giants needs to let a number of guys whose contracts are up go and bring in new blood. It’s rebuilding time. They’re good enough to win a big game here and there, but too many guys are too old to make a run like last year. O-line is basically a year away from a full collapse and JPP is the only stud left on the D-line. Two Super Bowls in five years is a damn good run, but it’s time to get younger.

No one in the NFC east is any good.

  32. vicksprman says: Dec 24, 2012 1:57 PM

I hope Vick does well the only problem is the Eagles secondary heals all struggling Qb’s. Eli might throw for 500 yards and 6 touchdowns.

  33. trllturner18 says: Dec 24, 2012 2:25 PM

I hope Vick has a MONSTER game

  34. arson81 says: Dec 24, 2012 2:32 PM

Tough break for the kid….no pun intended. I’m happy for Vick though if he does get the start. He handled the demotion with class at least.

  35. tedesco47 says: Dec 24, 2012 2:44 PM

“Vick starting may make the Eagles a more dangerous opponent for the Giants”

And yet, Vick will still be released because him and Andy Reid are the scapegoats for a joke of a season.
The Eagles have 4 wins, and 3 of them are come from behind victories led by Michael Vick, playing behind one of the worst offensive lines in NFL history, and an atrocious defence.

The eagles would be incredibly ignorant to let this guy go, but they will. And a team like the Jets or Cardinals (both teams with good defences) will scoop a quarterback who has a career winning percentage of over 70%, with Brian Finneran being the best receiver he has ever had.

Oh, and lets not forget Vick dismantled this league not even 2 years ago… His health is a question mark (mainly concussions). But if he plays for a team with a decent defence and has longer than 0.6 seconds in the pocket, that team is in the playoffs guaranteed.

  36. dannomac21 says: Dec 24, 2012 2:51 PM

  38. janvanflac says: Dec 24, 2012 2:55 PM

the game means nothing because even if the Giants win they aren’t making the playoffs…but the Eagles players will want to send Andy off with a win, and find a way to make it happen.

Vick wouldn’t have survived the Tampa game or the Washington game. Foles was hit repeatedly..it wasn’t just one lineman letting a guy get by, it was the entire pocket collapsing. I don’t know how Foles lasted as long as he did and he deserves props for playing the 2nd half with a broken hand…no wonder his passes looked a little wobbly..should have tied the game if Evan Moore doesn’t drop a pass.

Thanks for clarifying which hand was broken, janvanflac….agree that if Moore makes his catch it would have been interesting; surely Reid would have gone for the 2-point conversion….
