Getty ImagesFormer NFL linebacker Joey Porter was released from jail Monday after squaring a five-figure debt owed to the Hard Rock Casino in Las Vegas.
Porter was arrested on Friday after being stopped for a traffic violation in Bakersfield, Calif. He was later detained when the officers saw he had an outstanding warrant for his arrest due to a theft and bad check complaint filed earlier this year. According to the Associated Press, Porter was released pending dismissal of the charge after paying the $70,000 he owed to the Hard Rock Casino.
Per the report, Porter had received several IOU markers from the casino in June.
Porter retired from the NFL after 13 years in the league. Porter most recently played for the Arizona Cardinals after spending time with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Miami Dolphins.

Joey Porters financial advisor wants an explanation
Good to see that he’s become a responsible adult in his post career life.
I’m sure the money he’s made during his playing days will last well into retirement.
Called it
Once a steeler, always a steeler…
Everyone forgets this guy was the original James Harrison.
That’s disappointing. If ever there was a person who I would have been delighted to see spend Christmas in jail, it would be this ignoramus.
He will be back.
I’ve sat in the actual booth of the restaurant in metro Denver where he was shot many moons ago… no joke.
C’mon Porter! Stop askin for markers. If you can’t pony up at that moment, you don’t need a marker. Gamblin’ 101 right there… go sleep it off and wake up NOT owing 70k. You’ll feel all the more wiser, I promise.
Hey Joey…Betting out on the Steelers was DUMB!
PS-BigBen should cough-up at least 35K!
He was a dirty player. That is all you can say. I hate dirty players I don’t care who he played for. He often hit people after the whistle and they were illegal hits even. never liked him
Wow! Joey Porter should stay out of Casinos! First the Levi Jones thing and now this. If you can’t handle it Joey it is best not to partake.
Joe Peezy one of my favorite Steelers ever. We all make mistakes and I am sure you will move on to do positive things. You are missed in Steeler Nation, we still havent fount anyone who plays with that same fire.
He signed the markers in June, then wrote either bad checks or checks on a closed account to pay them.
Bad form, Joey. Very bad form. Just try to get credit at the HRC again, and even other casinos. Stiffing a Vegas casino for a marker is about as serious a crime as there is in that town.
He’s still around??
That’s better than money sir. Those are IOU’s. You see that one there? 275,000 grand? You might want to hold on to that one.
Not a shock to see this happen though.
I literally just saw him at Mobil a week ago on the Eastside of Bakersfield…poor guy, the NFL needs to create classes to teach these guys how to properly handle their finances and savings. C’mon man…
Who didnt see this coming?
Times are tough lol.
My suggestion? dont give casinos your money. But what do I know..
gambling and “squaring” a $70,000 debt sounds more like someone came to hos rescue. Nobody willfully writes a bad check of that size.
This bum will be broke in leas then 5 years.
Knowing Porter he probably tried to bribe his way out of jail time… by writing a check.
5 figure…hah
My car is worth 5 figures
Wasn’t hard to call. This is the guy that takes his shirt off at the Rio! You’re no Barkley, Joey.
This article almost makes it sound as if Nevada (State Motto: “Fleece The Tourists”) has a debtor’s prison. One reason I give the nasty little town of Las Vegas a wide berth
They don’t collect debts in Vegas like they used to. He probably still has his kneecaps.
This is an absolutely shocking story.
Why do we hear about this? Just to hurt a guy who’s down? He’s washed-up, done as an NFL player, been retired for some time. What’s the purpose of this story?
From almost the entire time between 1999 and 2010 I’ve worked in the casino industry.. from a lowly craps dealer to a pit manager.. until I finally had enough of it. I felt like a bartender serving alcoholics drinks. They’re poison and it’s for reasons like what happened with Porter. He may be a moron, but even the smartest, most grounded people are susceptible to becoming hooked on the risk/reward service they provide.
What’s up with Bakersfield and Porter? Cops seem to have a thing to stop him. Might be better to not tempt fate and avoid the area.
He was an overrated big mouth no producing BUM!
Shoe-la knows all!
What a loser.
Can’t wast money like that after you retire. Your not bigtime anymore.
I got a feeling this guy hasn’t seen his last jail cell.
Is it just me or does anyone else think we’ll be hearing from Joey again?
