Lorenzo Alexander finally makes it to the Pro Bowl

One of the most important — and most unheralded — players in the league has finally earned external recognition for his contributions.

Redskins special-teams captain Lorenzo Alexander has made it to the Pro Bowl, for the first time in his career.

Via the Washington Post, Alexander has 19 special-teams tackles this season, most in the NFL.  The Redskins kickoff team has held opponents to 23.4 yards per return, the lowest in the league.

I’m surprised he hasn’t made the Pro Bowl,” coach Mike Shanahan said earlier this year.  “To play as consistent as he has the last couple years, I would think he would make it because he’s been such a dominating force on special teams. . . .  Coaches eventually see guys that make plays and he’s been doing that this year when he’s been double and triple-teamed.”

Alexander, a sixth-year veteran, is one of three Redskins to qualify for the NFC roster, joining quarterback Robert Griffin III and tackle Trent Williams.

absolute beast on the field and a great community guy. pretty sure he made the pro bowl before but it wasn’t the initial vote. I think it was as an alternate. still completely deserved. congrats @onemangang97

No knock on Calvin Johnson, Robert Griffin, Earl Thomas, Jimmy Graham, or Adrian Peterson, but Lorenzo Alexander may be the best all-around athlete in the NFL right now. Nobody else in the league can make realistic contributions at as many different positions as he can.

For those who don’t know, and are about to give me a thumbs down, Alexander has played DT, DE, every position on the O-line, tight end, fullback, outside and inside linebacker, and special teams gunner during his career with the Redskins. What that says about the Redskins as a team is a whole different story, but the guy is a freakish athlete.

I would swear he makes almost every kickoff and punt return tackle. And they aren’t nice tackles either. He blows people up. Well deserved.

As a skins fa – please never refer rg3 as “weapon X””. That belongs to the hated but respected Brian Dawkins.
