One of the most important -- and most unheralded -- players in the league has finally earned external recognition for his contributions.
Redskins special-teams captain Lorenzo Alexander has made it to the Pro Bowl, for the first time in his career.
Via the Washington Post, Alexander has 19 special-teams tackles this season, most in the NFL. The Redskins kickoff team has held opponents to 23.4 yards per return, the lowest in the league.
“I’m surprised he hasn’t made the Pro Bowl,” coach Mike Shanahan said earlier this year. “To play as consistent as he has the last couple years, I would think he would make it because he’s been such a dominating force on special teams. . . . Coaches eventually see guys that make plays and he’s been doing that this year when he’s been double and triple-teamed.”
Alexander, a sixth-year veteran, is one of three Redskins to qualify for the NFC roster, joining quarterback Robert Griffin III and tackle Trent Williams.
