Manning, Matthews, Slater following their fathers to the Pro Bowl

For three players on this year’s Pro Bowl rosters, making it to Hawaii is a family tradition.

Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning, Packers linebacker Clay Matthews and Patriots special teams coverage ace Matthew Slater have all been selected to the Pro Bowl, and all of them had fathers who were multiple-time Pro Bowlers as well.

Manning is the son of Archie Manning, who went to two Pro Bowls with the Saints. Matthews is the son of Clay Matthews, who was a four-time Pro Bowler with the Browns. And Slater is the son of Jackie Slater, who was chosen to the Pro Bowl seven times during his 20-year career with the Rams.

I had forgotten how Matthew Slater’s father A.C. got elected to the Pro Bowl solely off his wrestling performance in high school at Bayside High.

So the Packers send to the Pro Bowl an OLB who has been injured half the season and a C who got benched..

Tell me again why we allow fans to pick these rosters?

Slater has worked hard and is going on his special teams performance – always an under-rated aspect of the game, but nice to see some recognition

Because Pro Bowls and All Star games are exhibitions for the fans, the ones that pay to watch. It’s not about ‘getting it right’.
