Von Miller pulling for Aldon Smith, wants to play with him one day

Broncos linebacker Von Miller would need one of the biggest individual sack days on record Sunday to wind up setting a new single-season record for sacks in a season, but he knows who he wants to break the record if he can’t do it.

Miller told Lindsey Jones of USA Today that he’ll have more chances to break the record and that he’s “hoping” 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith can get there this season by “finishing stronger” than he did last year. He’s not rooting against Texans defensive end J.J. Watt — Miller wore a bracelet supporting Watt’s charitable efforts last year — but he’s definitely pulling for Smith, a player he’d like to call a teammate at some point down the road.

“Me, Marcell Dareus and Aldon Smith, we talked about doing the whole LeBron, Wade and Bosh thing,” Miller said in reference to the Miami Heat trio that joined forces two years ago and won last season’s NBA championship. “We talked about doing that somewhere down the line.”

NFL quarterbacks have likely thought of more comforting things than Miller and Smith coming at them from opposite ends of the line, so they’ll be reassured to learn that any team-up is unlikely to happen in the immediate future. Any of those quarterbacks that find themselves on Denver’s schedule will be less reassured to hear other goals that Miller set for himself when he was coming into the league as part of the impressive 2011 defensive draft class.

“I didn’t want to just be the best linebacker on the board. I wanted the best defensive player,” Miller said. “I might not have looked like a traditional outside linebacker or a traditional defensive end, but I wanted teams to see me as the best defensive player out there.”

That wouldn’t be a bad consolation prize for not setting the sacks record and it’s certainly a goal Miller can reach if he keeps playing at the same level we’ve seen in his first two seasons.

  1. I doubt Marcell Dareus has the same impact in the NFL as a Bosh/Wade/James has in the nba. Dareus is just an ordinary player who’s getting ouplayed by Kyle Williams every week.

This mindset is a very bad thing. The NBA has declined into a joke league and that attitude from many players (and its acceptance from the league) is a major cause. The NBA has become strictly about individual players rather than teams. If the NFL mindset makes that shift as well, football will decline faster than the rule changes are changing the game.

  3. Only thing is, the NFL is much more a team sport than the NBA. They both are definitely team sports, but in the NBA it is much easier to just get 5 individual players and win. The NFL requires 11 players on the same page, otherwise you can’t win. I got to see that first-hand, being an Eagles fan and all.

  4. if u put a bum (ricky jean francois) next to aldon smith… aldon will be double teamed all game sometimes triple teamed including rb. aldon gets all that attention because hes very good. aldon wont get any 1 on 1 matchups as long as ricky jean francois is playing in place of justin smith.

I like Aldon Smith but he wasn’t getting double teamed against Seattle. Russell Okung is just one of the better LT’s in the game and shut him down. Even when he switched to the right side Breno Giacomini was able to hold him off.

  6. Sad to say as a 49er fan, but after last weeks game in Seattle I have to say that Von is the better player over Aldon (while also showing that Justin Smith is still vastly underrated)

  7. aldon smith is nothing without justin smith? so when he does a simple bullrush and just rolls over the offensive lineman thats because of justin? ive seen aldon completely annihilate opponents. he has crazy strength, is fast, and can bend like gumby. so quit the foolish talk and stop hating on a great player.
