Correct, however you can hit a defenseless player in a legal way, which this was. There are three stipulations on what you cannot do:

1. Cannot hit in the head or neck area
2. Cannot hit with the crown of the tackler’s helmet
3. Cannot launch off the ground

As long as you tackle/hit without breaking any of those rules you’re good.

It doesn’t matter if he was otherwise defenseless.

I am a huge 49er fan and I think that hit was clean as can be he was strung out by a high pass and was laid out by a clean hit. The dirty hit was on manningham but it is football and that’s why we watch. Good luck to them in the playoffs and hope to meet up for a exciting game in the playoffs

liddogg33, I didn’t make any excuses of our loss last weekend. Don’t throw excuses out about losing to the Niners earlier in the season. I don’t care about dropped passes, missed field goals. Win the game, win the division, and win in the playoffs. We’ll see where we all are a month from now.

Most of us in Seattle were hoping not to go 7-9 again this year, so the playoffs are a happy surprise. We are however pretty optimistic about the next 4-5 years!

This is a vastly different team then the one that lost by 7 points at candlestick (even with 4 dropped passes,no Brandon Mebane, and a missed Haushka field goal).. And you and your “squad” saw what I mean by that last Sunday!!!!

Except for the fact that the NFL doesn’t take holidays off and they’ve already dished out fines for this week. Chancellor wasn’t on that list.

The way he hit him is not what the flag is for. The flag was for hitting a defenseless receiver, if you can’t see he was defenseless then you are blind. Goldson had a similar hit againt the patriots the week before and got a fine even though the hit was a shoulder to the sternum. this is a new rule to give the appearance that the nfl cares about player safety, just like the fines that always follow. He will be fined, it just hasn’t happened yet because its a holiday week.

And for everyone stating seattle should thank the replacement officials for getting into the playoffs here is a little nugget of truth for you… Seattle owns the tiebreaker against EVERY OTHER WILDCARD CONTENDER!!!! Even with one more loss they would still be in the drivers seat for the playoffs!!! And the Legion of BOOM is very real and very dangerous!!!! No matter how much hate you try and sprinkle on this team they are very much for real and will be around for a very long time.. And get those no superbowl wise cracks in while you can because very soon that will not be a statement you can make!!!

It was a clean hit. I don’t understand the debate. I’m a Niner fan through and through and it was a thing of beauty. Seahawks thumped us good last Sunday and we deserved it. The Niners showed up completed unprepared and had no sense of urgency throughout the game. It was an excellent win by the Seahawks. You still were not good enough all year to win the division. Now go home and prepare for your gifted wildcard birth (Be sure to send a thank you letter to the replacement refs and the Packers) and hope you can play well on the road. I personally hope that road leads you right back to Candlestick so we can settle this for the 2012 season.

The NFL needs to change its directives to its referees. Three flags on that legal hit. THREE!!! Stop flagging hits just because they are hard hits. It could have totally changed the outcome of that game. (Thankfully, it didn’t).

It doesn’t get much cleaner (or harder) than Kam’s hit that knocked Vernon Davis into Thursday.

At speed the hit looked like a kill shot. In slow motion you could tell it was clean. If I was a ref on the field I’d toss the flag, too. We all have the ability to look at the play over and over in super slow mo and can’t imagine how the refs might have gotten that one wrong. If Davis can’t stand up and doesn’t know when he is, let alone where he is, then you kind of make an assumption.

It is good that the NFL hasn’t dropped a fine on this one, because the tape shows it was clean.

We wouldn’t be seeing all these silly fines and penalties if it wasn’t for a group of grown men trying to sue the league because no one told them explicitly that multiple blows to the head are bad for you.

Don’t really want to get into the trash talking stuff today. In my opinion it was a clean hit. Having said that, Goldson got a late fine for that very hit last week and Ed Reed has gotten two now. The NFL fines here and there by some subjective measure so who knows, but if they stay consistent he’ll be fined whether he says so or not.

I said it was a clean hit, and that I hope whitner gets a chance to repay the favor. Last year, Chancellor was called for several late hits and was fined on a couple of occasions. His teammates in the Seattle secondary had a few fines as well.

This year, you can tell they’ve worked hard on refining their technique so they are administering hard shots within the rules. In fact, the only fine I can recall seeing anyone in the secondary receive is when Earl Thomas was fined for “roughing” Ryan Tannehill, which is as ticky-tack a “finable offense” as you will ever see.

Unfortunately, the mentality and resultant procedural guidelines described above are accurate.

But a concern could be that policies in place like this give officials a free pass to “ERR” and in effect, comfortably, regularly and reflexively become “over-officious jerks.”

How about the refs don’t get an unlimited supply of Get Out of Jail Free cards for such ERRORS?

Blown calls like this can change the outcomes of games, and how it’s hashed out in hindsight on the following Thursday won’t put Humpty Dumpty together again.

If you’re going to call a specific personal foul like helmet-to-helmet, horse collar, or blow to the head, why not allow that to be reviewable? I’m not saying that all penalties should be reviewable, but where there are specifics like this, why not be able to take another look at it?

In this case, the player was flagged for a completely clean hit. 15 yards and an automatic first down can be a game changer.

Not that I agree with the personal foul call, but wasn’t this hit one of those “defenseless receiver” hits that they’ve liked to call the last couple of seasons? Why is this such a shocker to people? I’ve seen flags thrown on this multiple times on airborne receivers who get hit by a safety before the receiver lands on the ground.

How is throwing a flag ‘protecting players’ in any way? If the player is hurt, he’ll still be hurt, just 15 yards further down the field. It’s not the like the yellow flags sprinkle magic healing dust over a player when they’re thrown.

Yea you must not of seen them when your defense was being scored on at will. Don’t remember the circus catch by Baldwin, or maybe toe tap catch in the end zone by Baldwin. Maybe the Sidney Rice catch .. or oh, the other Baldwin catch in the end zone.

Even Lynch scored on a receiving touch down. I’m sorry you didn’t take notice, but that’s generally what 49ers fans do. If you deny it happened, then it didn’t happen, right?
