@panther17

I'll give you that that his playing days are closer to the end then the beginning but we are arguing semantics. The point I was trying to convey is Payton would have been foolish to leave an elite QB to go somewhere else. If Brees is at an elite level that is chances at getting another ring and you don't pass that up. Elite QB's are hard to come by.

Either way I am glad he's back and here is to a safe game tomorrow.

How fast do you think Benson raises ticket prices on the average fan after having to pay Breeze and Paidton. Keep in mind he got his Superdome rebulit compliments of the NFL and the US tax payer. I am sure that want stop the ticket increase even coming off of a loser season
----------------------------------------------------------

Mr. Benson owns the TEAM .... Louisiana taxpayers are the ones who funded and continue to suplement the LOUISIANA SUPERDOME (no matter who bought naming rights) .... get that srtaight.

The Louisiana Stadium & Exposition District is a political subdivision created under Louisiana law. The LSED has ownership of and jurisdictional authority over the John A. Alario Center, the Louisiana Superdome, the New Orleans Arena, the Saints Training Facility, TPC Louisiana and Zephyr Stadium. The LSED provides oversight concerning these facilities through a 7 member Board of Commissioners appointed by the Governor. Board members have no set term length, and may serve for as long as the governor determines that their participation and actions align with the best interest of the LSED.

So on a side note…if Sean Payton is suspended until the first day after the Super Bowl. How could he have negotiated a contract without any contact with the Saints organization? As Mr Brees would say…I need an explanation
----------------------------------------------------------
one person Sean Payton could talk to was Benson by permission on the Godell ... if you had actually been objectively keeping up with things instead of just regurgitating what other closed minded individuals have been spewing

"And speaking of quarterbacks who are overrated, Dallas fans, get over it."

Romo has one of the best winning records as a starter of all active QB's (.597. If you need a point of reference, Brees is .589, Eli Manning is .574, Matt Schaub is .543) working with mostly pedestrian offensive players around him and owns some pretty prominent Dallas Cowboys passing records (and we're talking about the Dallas Cowboys, here. Not the Giants, not the Eagles, not the Saints, Jags or Bucs. ) yet he is almost universally characterized as average, at very best. How is he OVERrated?

And there are many delusional Saints fans who believe there was no bounty. Face it, Roger Goodell screwed up with his investigation by not going after everyone and getting some information wrong. However, Paul Talibague confirmed there was a bounty in place and that coaches, including Payton, knew about it and then lied to the NFL. The Super Bowl ring that was “earned” will have an asterisk next to it for life. Just don’t complain if Saints players are targeted in bounties from other teams in the future – especially when Payton regains control. You reap what you sow.

Saying that the NFL got some evidence wrong is like saying that there are some cold days in winter. The NFL had nothing but a grandstand play because of mitigating concussion lawsuits by former players. Goodell picked the wrong team to mess with and it's come back to bite him on his ass. Tagliabue even said as much. However, keep trying to make yourself feel better by denigrating the Saints' Super Bowl win. Something tells me that it's one more SB win than your team has. :)

Brees can still have 2 or 3 years of elite play. Maybe even your 4. Doesn't mean he is in his prime. Career is still edging closer and closer to retirement.

Umm, Duh! Did anyone seriously think he was going to go anywhere else. If so, they were (and are) delusional.

Jerry (and Stephen) were never going to fire Garrett and hire Payton. This was an invention of the haters, the media trying to make a story, and delusional band wagon 'fans'. The same 'delusional' band wagon fans who think that the solution to any problem the team has is 'cut the QB', 'fire the coach', 'cut the entire team mid-season and hire all the pro bowlers standing around on street corners looking for work'.

I think Garrett is a very good coach and will be better as he gains experience. He's changed the psyche of that group of players (they weren't a 'team' under Phillips or even Parcells for that matter) from a mentally weak, 'quit at the first sign of adversity', not really worried about winning, too a resilient, tough, focused on winning team. Are they going to go undefeated for the next five years? Of course not, but I'd bet they will win a lot more than they lose. Its shown in the last half of this season. I look forward to seeing what he does next season.

People who want him fired are part of the 'instant gratification' generation. It just doesn't work that way in football or anything else.

I find the idea that the Saints missed Williams more than Peyton to be highly laughable.While Williams has put together some good squads,Williams had descended so far down the rabbit hole of looking to inflict harm as opposed to playing defense. Way too much head down missile launching and too little coverage and piss poor tackling. Giving the playoff game away to SF last season was the epitome of this. To the end,they were were concerned with hitting people and couldn't cover or tackle the one guy capable of hurting them. No amount of Brees can overcome this idiotic mindset and resulting porous defense....

@beerbudsnbevo, @panther17

So two years left for Brees?

Just taking that for what it's worth that is two legitimate shots Payton has at winning a Super Bowl. Who passes up that to go to another team?

I will admit I might have my Saints blinders on but I think Brees has 4 years left at a high level due to his quick release. Rarely does he take contact and when he does he knows it's coming and folds up. Defenders almost never get Brees blind. The last hit he took like that was by DeMarcus Ware back in 2009. Aside from the quick release he's one of the smarter qb's to play the game. I expect that as he ages he will adjust his game.

The fact that we are debating the shelf life of Brees is just another reason the bounty scandal and subsequent punishments stink. This past year was truly a lost year.

Turning to the defense I am happy with the progress they made this year, take away the debacle in New York they improved each week. Greg Williams's system covered poor personnel by bringing the house on every play, problem with that sooner or later the attack becomes expected and gets exposed. Coach Spagnolo did a great job this year getting the most out of what he had. He also unearthed a decent pair of safeties along the way.

The only thing the Saints miss about Williams is that his system was a perfect fit for the offense the Saints have. He was either going to give up a quick TD or force a 3 and out allowing N.O. to dominate the TOP forcing teams into shoot outs that suited Sean Payton's style of aggressive play calling.

When Payton gets back I think the defense will only improve because he will get Spagnolo to take risks. That is what makes the Saints the Saints and that was missing this year.

It is a tough division Atlanta is Atlanta, the Bucs are going to improve and the Panthers with coaching adjustments and keeping the injury bug at bay next year will allow them to improve. Perhaps more importantly it's becoming a tough conference. The west has risen up with the Hawks and 49ers. The North is just brutal and the East is going to get tougher with the Skins back in play. The Saints needed to get Payton back and did. It's going to be a rough road in the future but I like our chances here in New Orleans with him calling the shots. I think next year is all about redemption and I am glad he's back at the helm.

Good luck in the playoffs this year will be back next year!!!

This is coming from a Cowboys fan. Why in the world would he want to go and coach in Dallas? Jerry Jones is way too hands on. Plus Sean Payton and Drew Brees are extremely close. Would you want to go from Drew Brees to Tony Romo? Want to coach Dez Bryant?

Plus him leaving that city would have made him look awful. Im sure New Orleans is paying him pretty good considering how badly this season went without him coaching there. There shold never have been a doubt in anyones mind. The ogranization stood by his side its not like they shunned him

The bounty scandal actually worked out for Payton on a personal level. Yeah he did serve a year suspension but that team fell apart without him and did not look the same at all, it makes it very hard to argue against his importance to that team. If they bounce right back next year then it makes him pretty much bulletproof in New Orleans.

Thanks Goodell, way to show Payton! The man takes a year off to coach his son's football team, play keyboards at a Warren Haynes show, play drums on stage for Kenny Chesney, play drums on stage for Jimmy Buffet, and then he gets a long-term deal and (no doubt) a nice pay raise now that his value to the team has been proven.. Then, he's going to be greeted like a hero back in New Orleans.

Yep. All things considered, while he lost a year of football, Sean Payton really came off pretty well out of this "suspension" deal. Good job thinking it through Goodell. I can see why so many people think you're doing a great job as commish.

There was once a coach named Bill Walsh who was a former whiz offensive coordinator, designed genius offenses as a head coach, and had a small aging QB. Somehow, he was able to develop another QB when that one got old. Maybe Sean Payton can do the same. The reasons you can't win in Dallas now are the overbearing owner and the sense of entitlement that comes from media hype and a palacial stadium, there can't be a healthy winning culture there with any coach. They could only win before the salary cap when they could outspend people and had less expectations and their owner had not built up as much ego.

Not a Saints fan at all but this was a solid move by the Bensons. Goodell (GODELL) went way overboard in suspending him for the season. Would have fined him a million, suspended him for 7 games and taken draft picks. GODELL almighty, is talking about adding more teams to the playoffs, fining players for legal hits (Ed Reed), in cohorts with an owner who takes Salary cap space away from teams, and wants to get rid of PR/KR all together. He needs to be striped of some of his power before the NFL starts to resemble the NBA. Glad for Payton though.
