Earlier this week, Buccaneers coach Greg Schiano sounded unsure about activating Eric Wright after his four-game suspension for violating the league’s performance-enhancing substances policy.
Apparently, he’s been convinced that having his best cornerback might help his league-worst pass defense tomorrow against the Falcons, as Wright has been activated.
According to ESPN.com’s Pat Yasinskas, Wright was added back to the 53-man roster and cornerback LeQuan Lewis was released. If they weren’t going to play Wright tomorrow, there would be no point in activating him.
They’ve allowed 4,545 passing yards this season, leaving them 252 short of the league record for most allowed in a single season (set last year by the Packers). The Bucs don’t, however, have Aaron Rodgers to make up for it, which is part of the reason they’re 6-9.
Wright’s $7.75 million salary for next year is no longer guaranteed because of the suspension, so they’ll have to make a long-term decision after this season.
In the short term, they might as well try to not be the worst ever in that particular category.
