There are coaches and there are coordinators…..most times they’re not the same….coordinators cannot be effective head coaches (See Norv Turner, Rex Ryan, Bill Arnsparger and a litany of others)

Dom Capers was the very first coach of two expansion teams,that means Vince Lombardi could have coached those teams and been unsuccessful so does that really mean Capers is a bad head coach?

As a Bengals fan I can tell you with almost certainty that even the great Vince Lombardi(barring the fact that he’s dead) himself couldn’t win in Cincinnati with the current ownership. Look at the successful coaches that went to other teams and failed like Jimmy Johnson, Bill Parcells, Mike Ditka and Mike Holmgren.

I have to comment on the picture. Why is there always some idiot with a “D” and a “fence” at every game. Have any of you had the pleasure of sitting next to one of these geniuses? They are always convinced they thought of it first. Seriously do NFL rules require one of these dolts at every game or something?

I know some of these guy’s didn’t have a great run as a head coach, but just look at Bill Belichick. He was horrible his first time around as HC of the browns. Now he is known as maybe the best coach of all time. People learn from their mistakes and get better from it. At least this isn’t the NBA where they fire coaches all the time after they hired them just 6 months ago, and you have guy’s out there you have coached 5 teams in their career because the NBA just does this pathetic cycle of changing Coaches if they don’t see results right away.

@Gordon Capers and Haslett both won Coach of the Year as head coaches. Haslett’s worst season was when Hurricane Katrina destroyed NOLA. Can you really say he shouldn’t have a second chance to prove himself?

Haslett? He has one of the worst defenses in the nfl. I listen week in and week out as announcers talk about his creativity in schemes. Drives me nuts as I feel the skins have under achieved on defense. Just an opinion of course but I’ve watched every skins game for a decade now and three years under haslett. Not impressed. Heck even his time with the steelers the defense was lower ranked than the years before and after him

You don’t want Del Rio. He needs to stay just where he is for 3 or 4 more years. Signed: Von Miller, Elvis Dumervil, Wesley Woodyard, Champ Bailey and the rest of the defense with a PS from Manning, Fox & Elway.

Zimmer should be at the top of the list as well as Arians. It looks like it was a blessing what happened in Pittsburg. McDaniel is a coordinator at best. He got lucky being with Brady and Belichick. You put in in the Rams gig and the HC got canned the same year. He’s not a HC! But my beloved BEARS would welcome the right Turner brother as OC in a minute. He would be a great compliment to Billick’s staff once they hire him as HC!

Very few people have the knowledge,skills, experience and drive to be a head coach in the NFL.
Many have great success until they get that final bump to the head of the table. There is (or should be) no shame in staying at the level you have the most competence. Constantly re-bumping these men up hoping for different results sets organizations back for years. McDaniels will no doubt get another try out at Head Coach with predictable results. After years of sub-standard results Norv Turner will no doubt get a job as an O/C and excel. These other candidates mentioned should stay put and continue performing at a successful level.
As Dirty Harry says; “A man has to know his limitations”.

There are coaches that are “retreads” that end up working out well. Don’t forget, Bill Belichick coached for the Cleveland Browns from ’91-’95 with a record of 36-44(thanks Wikipedia). Other coaches to start their carriers for other teams include Tony Dungy, Marv Levy and Mike Shanahan. Sometimes, it’s the organization and not the coach. I believe it’s a combination of the right coach with the right organization and the right group of players. Put it perfectly. The best move for all of these guys would be to stay exactly where they are. If they are somehow offered head coaching jobs, it’ll just be more hair off their balding heads, two or three years of misery for that city, and then having to look for work again in the position they currently have. Only in a new city, a new division, and with new personnel. Just stay put.

I think Capers’ situation is different than the other names mentioned. He was head coach of two expansion franchises, that’s a lot different than taking over an established organization.

What Jim Haslett has done this year with all the injuries is nothing short of amazing! He deserves another shot at being a head coach and he may get an offer. Personaly I don’t think he wants the added responsibility. I see him back next year with the Redskins. HTTR!

Skins could do better if he were to move on…I am not saying that we have the most talented defense, but I think he is at least partly to blame for our PPG and YPG…Some has to be scheme…All the zone that he played for some of the season? Awful…We got burnt. He will not be a head coach.

Just what the NFL needs. More retread coaches who were awful the first time around. Anyone that thinks that the third time will be the charm for Capers is crazy. Zimmer deserves a shot and I don’t know enough about Horton to know if he’d be any good as a HC. But I’d still take a chance on him over some retread that failed miserably the first time, or in the case of Capers, twice.

Del Rio, Haslett, and Capers each have previously failed as head coaches too.

Del Rio: 2 playoffs in 9 years.

Thanks to the extension that Wayne Weaver and Gene Smith’s predecessor were dumb enough to give he stayed for far too long!!!
