If Chan Gailey is fired on Monday, at least he can say he went out a winner.

The Bills beat the Jets 28-9 at home on Sunday, drawing the curtain on a pair of dismal seasons long after either team’s season held out the promise of anything but continued misery. The Bills offense was able to turn the time of possession tables in the second half, controlling the ball and scoring two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to close out any hopes of a Jets comeback.

Of course, most would argue that letting the Jets offense possess the ball is the surest route to victory and they did nothing on Sunday to counteract that notion. Mark Sanchez was 17-of-35 for 205 yards and turned the ball over twice, leaving him with 52 turnovers since the start of the 2011 season. That should tell you everything you need to know about the state of the Jets’ offense right now and everything you need to know about why offensive coordinator Tony Sparano’s expected firing will kick off an offseason of change for that unit. Whether or not it includes Sanchez remains to be seen, but his guaranteed $8.25 million salary for 2013 may mean his run as a Jet is not yet at its end.

Change is coming to Buffalo too, of course, and it will likely include quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick threw one last touchdown Sunday, but he completed fewer than half of his passes and didn’t do much to make you think Buffalo would be making a mistake by moving in a different direction. It’s always nice to leave on a high note, though, and that’s what the Bills were able to do on Sunday.
