Getty ImagesThe road to the Super Bowl in the AFC goes through Denver. And the first overall pick in the 2013 NFL draft goes to Kansas City.
The Broncos defeated the Chiefs today in Denver, ensuring that they need only to win two home playoff games in order to punch a ticket to New Orleans for the Super Bowl. Denver is the AFC’s No. 1 seed, and now the Broncos will get a week off during the wild card round before hosting the Bengals, Colts or Ravens in the divisional round. The Broncos have to be considered the favorites to reach the Super Bowl in the AFC.
As for the Chiefs, they finish their season with a 2-14 record, tied with the Jaguars for the worst in the NFL this season, and because the Chiefs played an easier schedule than the Jaguars this season, they win the tiebreaker and get the first overall pick in the draft.
Today’s game in Denver was about as competitive as you’d expect from a game between the team with home-field advantage throughout the playoffs and the team with the first overall pick in the draft: The Broncos jumped out to an early lead and never trailed, Peyton Manning picked apart the Chiefs’ defense, completing 23 of 29 passes for 304 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions, and he got big plays from receivers Eric Decker and Demaryius Thomas. The Broncos’ defense made life miserable for Chiefs quarterback Brady Quinn. This game was a blowout.
Now it’s on to bigger and better things for the Broncos. In Kansas City they’re thinking about the draft, while in Denver they’re thinking about the Super Bowl.
