Getty ImagesA meaningless game in San Diego heated up in the second quarter when Chargers linebacker Takeo Spikes and Raiders running back Mike Goodson got into a fight, setting off a skirmish involving several players.
Spikes and Goodson were both ejected for an incident that involved facemasking, grabbing, pushing, shoving and jostling, but no punching. Spikes seemed to be furious that he had been ejected even though he hadn’t thrown a punch, and he had to be physically restrained from getting into the ref’s face. Spikes eventually was escorted to the locker room, and he attempted to get the fans pumped up as he left the field.
Raiders quarterback Terrelle Pryor, doing his best to break things up, grabbed Goodson and attempted to pull him out of the skirmish. That was some good leadership from Pryor, making his first career start.
As for the game itself, it began with Micheal Spurlock returning the opening kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown for San Diego, and then featured a long Chargers drive that ended with a Nick Novak 30-yard field goal to give San Diego a 10-0 lead. But shortly after the Spikes-Goodson incident, Pryor hit Darrius Heyward-Bey for a nine-yard touchdown pass to cut the deficit to 10-7.
