The Vikings are going to the playoffs

Green Bay Packers v Minnesota Vikings Getty Images

When the day started, the Vikings had two goals for Week 17.

They wanted to win against the Packers to secure themselves a ticket to the playoffs and they wanted to get running back Adrian Peterson 208 yards so that he could set the single-season rushing record. Achieving the first goal might have oame at the expense of the second as Peterson ran 26 yards to set up a Blair Walsh chip shot that made the Vikings 37-34 winners at the Metrodome.

That run left Peterson with 199 yards on 34 carries, leaving him nine yards shy of Eric Dickerson’s record when all was said and done. Had the game gone to overtime, perhaps Peterson would have wound up in the top spot. In a postgame interview with Pam Oliver of FOX, he showed no sign that the trip to the postseason was an unwelcome consolation prize.

Peterson got the big last play, but the much-maligned Christian Ponder made some of the biggest throws of the game to get the Vikings to the postseason. He hit Michael Jenkins on a third-and-11 for 25 yards just after the two-minute warning and he hit Jarius Wright with a perfectly thrown strike for 65 yards to set up a touchdown pass to Jenkins earlier in the fourth quarter. Ponder was 16-of-28 overall for 234 yards and three touchdowns, which is a pretty good performance for the biggest game of your brief professional life.

Walsh’s kick ended a thrilling back-and-forth second half that featured a controversial call (referee Mike Carey allowing a review of what was ruled a fumble despite Packers coach Mike McCarthy throwing the challenge flag on what wound up as a James Jones touchdown), a crucial turnover (Bryan Robison’s strip sack of Aaron Rodgers that halted Green Bay’s momentum) and big plays all over the place. There was also a terrible penalty by Packers cornerback Tramon Williams, who got flagged for illegal hands to the face on a failed third down try by the Vikings just before Jenkins’ touchdown.

And we get to do it all over again next week at Lambeau Field. The Packers slip to the third seed with the loss and the San Francisco win, which means they’ll host the sixth-seeded Vikings on the heels of a classic that lifted the Vikings to a playoff berth few saw coming at the start of the season.

Adrian Peterson is going to go down as one of the all time greats, we’re lucky to get to watch him.

I am happy that the Vikes are in the playoffs but I BADLY wanted AD / AP to break the record. I now find myself slightly depressed in the happiest way. Hard to describe. Congrats Vikes and AP!!!

That horn just went off in my head.

  5. isuhuskie says: Dec 30, 2012 8:00 PM

Three or four years from now when the Bears have rebuilt the team with their new coach (I hope); we’ll think the Packers did us a bigger favor by losing to Minnesota (and getting Lovie out of here) than if they had beat them…

  6. steelernationisthepinnacleofexistenceyouarenothing says: Dec 30, 2012 8:00 PM

So he fell short (as expected). Great season for him. Enjoy your playoff birth and early exit. In the end, only losers fall short, and that’s what Peterson ultimately is.

  7. jakec4 says: Dec 30, 2012 8:00 PM

Nine yards is ridiculously close. What makes it more impressive is that Peterson had less than 20 carries in seven games this season, and didn’t have a 100 yard game until week 4. Without that early rust it is hard to argue AD wouldn’t have shattered the record.

Nice job Vikings and Peterson. Greatest season ever for player coming off a major knee injury. Congrats Peterson!

It’s hilarious how the Vikings always fall short of importance. They won but for what…to lose next week. Should have gotten the record instead.

  12. patsfan22 says: Dec 30, 2012 8:01 PM

Through the majority of the season i’ve been saying Brady should be MVP but I’m not even going to bother, AP should win it by a landslide – he has been amazing.

The best part was Adrian Peterson being told he was 9 yards short and him seeming to have no idea he was that close. He was just very happy to win the game.

A shoe in for the comeback player of the year and probably the MVP or at least in the top 3.

  34. themagicfanguy says: Dec 30, 2012 8:07 PM

  35. axespray says: Dec 30, 2012 8:08 PM

Props to the vikings and their fans… everyone doubted your team would be relevant this year, yet you guys are in the playoffs.

Adrian Peterson deserves the MVP – Dude won this game for his team – Viking’s defense couldn’t Stop Rodgers – Peterson carried his dudes to the playoffs and was unselfish in wanting his team in the playoffs more than the record …

so – whatever, see you next week.

  36. zo121179 says: Dec 30, 2012 8:08 PM

If the Pack were just going to roll over like that at the end I wish they would have just let him in to get the record.

  37. purpblooded says: Dec 30, 2012 8:09 PM

How could Mc Carthy throw that flag? How could the refs call it like that? Too bad AD didn’t break the record, but he got us to the play-offs.

  38. arson81 says: Dec 30, 2012 8:09 PM

AD has to be the MVP. I hope it isn’t a Co-MVP either. No disrespect to Manning/Brady/Rogers…but for a rb to do what he did in a passing league, averaging 6 yards a carry, all while facing 8 man fronts in every single game. Unbelievable.

  39. midwestwarrior says: Dec 30, 2012 8:09 PM

peterson playing dumb in the interview with pam oliver like he had no clue he was 9 yards away was a sham. everybody knows he knew exactly how many yards he needed, that was all he cared about, i bet he wishes the game went to overtime and the kick was missed or blocked to satisfy his own personal stats.

  40. axespray says: Dec 30, 2012 8:09 PM

By the way, smh at you Tramon …

Can’t cover the vikings no name recievers ?

Then not even attempting to tackle Adrian ?
    smh.

  41. stellarperformance says: Dec 30, 2012 8:10 PM

Congratulations to the Vikings and their fans. They earned this one. If the Packers had to lose, my only regret is that Peterson did not get the record. See you next week…I hope the result is different.

  44. rickrock6661982 says: Dec 30, 2012 8:11 PM

And they needed to have Adrian Peterson have a historic season to reach this point.

Expect a whole lot of regression next year..

  45. sterling7 says: Dec 30, 2012 8:12 PM

As a Viking 4life since 1968-to think I was scared to death Adrian Peterson was going to get hurt his first game in particular within the first few handoffs, what and INCREDIBLE story. Also massive kudos to Leslie Frazier keeping it all together and also some love for Christian Ponder (maybe married life has made him focus). Congratulations to all us Viking diehards :-)

  46. supermariojosh says: Dec 30, 2012 8:12 PM

Great game vikes fans. Looks like you get I say on the bandwagon for one more week :-). But seriously, Peterson has to be the MVP. Absolutely unreal player. Hate that we have to play him two (and now three) times a year. That said, the way the second half went I think Green Bay dominates next week. Should be fun. Go Pack!

  47. fwippel says: Dec 30, 2012 8:14 PM

Great win for the Vikings. Four weeks ago they were 6-6 and most people thought they were headed for 6-10. They regrouped, they improved, they won back-to-back road games, and finally defeat the Packers.

Peterson is transcendent; he redefines greatness. He carried this offense for most of the season. Coming off knee surgery one year ago today, just amazing. Taking nothing away from O. J. Simpson in 1973, or Eric Dickerson in 1984, this is the best season any RB has had in NFL history.

That said, perhaps the most encouraging part of this victory was Ponder’s performance. He was clutch when the team needed him to be, and that throw to Jenkins on 3rd and 11 – money. That’s that this team has lacked for a very long time. He finally looks like an NFL QB. Hopefully, it’s for keeps.

  48. plaguedog519 says: Dec 30, 2012 8:14 PM

How many single season rushing records do you have? And, I thought it was a nice touch that AD found out he missed it from Pam Oliver during the post-game interview.

  50. judsonjr says: Dec 30, 2012 8:15 PM

As a Bears fan, this should be a bitter pill to swallow, but it’s not…I’m disappointed, sure, but also have to admit, MN deserved the spot more than we did.

As an NFC North fan, I hope the Vikes continue to win.

  57. purplepete24 says: Dec 30, 2012 8:22 PM

AP: 2 games vs Packers = 409 yards. Good enough to be in the top 20 for all rushers this season.

  58. electionconfidential says: Dec 30, 2012 8:23 PM

When Dickerson set the single season rushing record he didn’t win MVP. No reason to think AP will win it for doing even less. Great year of course, but it’s easier to be a RB than a QB…

  59. taintedsaints2009 says: Dec 30, 2012 8:25 PM

You know, I’m surprised the packers didn’t flop over and let Peterson get the record like they did for strahan…

The game, while exciting, was a pathetic display of Defensive mediocrity.

As a Packer fan, the only thing cool to see was AP running for that record. I fully expect Green Bay to lose next week and Minnesota will lose the following week.

Anyway, my hats off to the Vikes. They played well and deserved the win.

    But…

I can’t see the Packers losing next week, though. Let’s face it, the Vikes needed another AD 200 yd. performance and a career game from their maligned QB to pull out a 3 point victory. Not to mention, they will be emotionally spent.

  83. supermariojosh says: Dec 30, 2012 8:45 PM

Seriously though, can you even imagine how awful Christian Ponder would be without Peterson? Packer fan sending out congrats to the Vikes. Great game. It took a near flawless game by the Vikes to beat us by three points but the victory was earned. I don’t expect next week to be as mistake free (still don’t think Ponder is the answer) but enjoy this week as you have deserved it. Next week will hopefully belong to the Pack.

    Memo to some Packer fans…

Quit gloating that you somehow ruined our season by losing today…The Vikings outplayed you and won when they had to, and they went 4-0 down the
stretch – including a win over the Bears – while the Bears went 2-2. THAT’S what ended our season, okay, that and blowing a late lead at home against Seattle.

You guys are like, “Hey, who cares that we lost and blew the #2 seed, at least the Bears didn’t make it to the playoffs!”

That’s lame even by Packer fans’ standards.

Anyone else find Troy Aikmens in game commentary annoying? It is hard to believe he actually played the game. He talks like he doesnt know much about it. Madden was “Mr. Obvious” during games, but at least he was funny. Aikmen is “Mr. Obvious” and he is smug. Like he hates seeing todays QBs performing at a higher level than he did. It is almost sickening to listen to.

  106. truthserum4u says: Dec 30, 2012 9:12 PM

But the Vikings were only going to go 3-13 this year. 6-10 @ best.

The Vikings are going to be cellar dwellers in the NFC North…for years to come.

There wasn’t a win to be had in the tough final four games, they’ll go 0-4.

They’ll choke against the Packers. They’ll get crushed…what was it, 45-10…45-17?

How did all of those predictions turn out?

The Vikings will probably lose next week in Green Bay, but this season has been an absolute success for a team no one thought would come close to doing this well.

    Good job Vikes!

So close for AP. Maybe he obliterates it next year but even if he doesn’t come close again he is now in the 2000 club. That makes him the best RB in football since he has been in the league. This probably secures him a HOF berth also. CJ would hold out. AP is just happy his team makes the playoffs. What a difference in mentatlity and persona.

So I will injoy this win over a very good Packer team that has had thier way with the Vikes the past couple of years! So win ,lose or tie!! I’m proud of the whole Vikings team!! Id like to give big kudos to Ponder! he was everything the team needed! and then some!! I think it’s scary to think what the Vikes will be next year?

I may be going out on a limb here, but this team has provided the biggest surprise this season. It definitely makes me appreciate that games can be won and lost on any given Sunday. I am looking forward to an awesome game next Saturday. Best of luck Packers. SKOL!

More hatred against the Packers by the officials. Simpson was given a first down early in the game when he was short and that would have been 4th down, officials in the way of A-Rod making him waste timeouts so the Pack can’t even challenge Wright’s catch which clearly hit the ground, and Walsh’s kick was wide by the way.

  114. tokyosandblaster says: Dec 30, 2012 9:35 PM

I’ve read some comments by packers and vikings fans saying that neither one of these teams are going to do anything because of the defenses.

    I have to disagree.

The defenses today did everything they COULD to stop the two most valuable players in the NFL.

There is no defense for Adrian Peterson, when you have him bottled up and he just rips through tackles. Sure, there were some rookie mistakes, but all in all, the Packers won’t face another rusher like him in the Playoffs (obviously besides next week).

The Vikings wouldn’t face another QB as good as Rodgers. That may be homerism talking, but there really is no other QB in the league that would have made some of the plays that Rodgers did today.

I don’t think the defenses are that bad, they were just beaten by amazing athletes on both sides.

Neither the Packers or the Vikings will be anywhere near New Orleans on Super Bowl Sunday.

The game, while exciting, was a pathetic display of Defensive mediocrity.

As a Packer fan, the only thing cool to see was AP running for that record. I fully expect Green Bay to lose next week and Minnesota will lose the following week.

Was another exciting year for the NFC North though. But it is another year where the North wont represent in the big ….

    ————————————————————————

Your fan persona stands out. Bet your the same type of fan that talks the big talk if your team makes it through next 2 weeks. Any given Sunday, and Playoffs is new season. I think the Vikes embarrass your Packers next Saturday night and do it again the week following to the next team up as well and could careless what you think of today’s performance. Vikes beat Rams-Bears-Texans-Packers! No reason to think they can’t dig a little deeper and keep it going but you go ahead and do so. Guess that makes it not hurt so much if it doesn’t happen.

As a Viking fan, I couldn’t agree more. The thing that worries me is, as great as Peterson is, it’s much easier for an elite QB to completely take over a game than any other position player. Height: 14′ 11″
    Weight: 1 Metric Tonne
    Shoe size: 100 EEE
And another interesting fact: His shoulder pads originally started their life out as a couple of those HUGE tires from the taconite mine dump trucks, lightly modified to fit over his shoulders.

The Packers D made a lot of mistakes, but the Vikes played great, and earned their spot in the playoffs. My natural reaction to this is disappointment that now we somehow have to travel to San Fran and beat the 49ers on no rest. But who knows…if the Vikes play like they did today, they have a shot. 131. drekomp says: Dec 30, 2012 11:27 PM

This MVP debate is quite simple.

You can replace Peyton Manning with Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, or Drew Brees and get pretty much the same result.

No one can replace what Adrian Peterson did for the Vikings this season. That makes him the most valuable player by far.

I’m excited for the rematch next week. The Viking secondary is terrible with Winfield or Cook out. I imagine the Packers will have Randall Cobb back. Hopefully Antoine can play otherwise I think the rubber match could get ugly.

  132. thepoliticalfirebrand says: Dec 30, 2012 11:27 PM

SKOL Vikes! Best game I’ve seen since the 2009 NFC Title Game!

  133. wilnel1984 says: Dec 30, 2012 11:47 PM

Adrian Peterson does not have the same kind of teams that Peyton Manning and Tom Brady have surrounding them.

Manning has a host of very reliable and good receivers. Brady has that as well. Manning also has Knowshon Moreno who, by comparison, gives more help to the offense than Christian Ponder does for AP.

The MVP voting should not even be close: Peterson by a landslide.

  134. wilnel1984 says: Dec 30, 2012 11:51 PM

Now that the Pack will have that old guy, Woodson, back, the secondary might be a little better. However, they can’t keep stacking 8 in the box on Peterson. The reason that Pack one last time in Lambeau was because Ponder didn’t minimize his mistakes. That game could have gone either way.

If Ponder shows up like he did today, watch out Packer Nation. I know it’s a big if, but things like this have happened to you guys before.

  135. rickrock6661982 says: Dec 30, 2012 11:51 PM

Wow Ponder made a few clutch plays, but he basically did what any QB should be expected to do when he faces single coverage. Problem is not ponder, but that the a vikings don’t have a pure WR that can beat man coverage. Jarius Wright however may be changing things a bit with his recent emergence and at least Jenkins (unlike Simpson) can run the right route.
Aarron Rodgers performance was more impressive than Ponders because he did it facing very few in the box and most lined up in coverage. Adrian really was 50% of the passing game because of how much easier it is to pass against with 8 and 9 in the box.
The Packers didn’t learn from the Texans that Ponder can beat man coverage. He’ll, even Tim Tebow destroyed the Steelers when they kept 8 and 9 in the box all game long. Granted DT is a dominant WR and Decker was just coming on, but it should be expected of Ponder to play well. Ironically Ponders most clutch plays came on 3rd and long when the box wasn’t as stacked, but the overall performance of ponder should be expected to be at least that good considering how defenses focus on Adrian.
Musgrave can you please pass on 1st down regularly when defenses have 8 and 9 in the box then run on 3rd down more often? And leave Adrian in the game on 3rd downs more so they don’t know what is coming? How about a screen on 2nd and 10 rather than waiting for 3rd down? Musgrave has been okay, probably better than average, but really he could do a lot better.
