Bills bounce Chan Gailey

He came to Buffalo with a pedigree that included a near-perfect string over a 14-year period of postseason performances.  Three straight years of no playoffs has ended his run.

The Bills have fired coach Chan Gailey, according to Jerry Sullivan of the Buffalo News.

It’s hardly a surprise, even though G.M. Buddy Nix at one point said Gailey is safe.

For now, Nix is safe.  But it’s possible Nix will be fired, too.

And with owner Ralph Wilson now 94 years old, we’ve got a feeling he’ll be spending some of what he can’t take with him on a high-end coach who owns a Super Bowl ring.

Hey, it’s Chan Gailey……….what did you expect?

  2. crabcakesfootball says: Dec 31, 2012 11:07 AM

Andy Reid will be the next coach.

  3. pksullivanmph says: Dec 31, 2012 11:07 AM

We can only hope. Nix has to go first. You know with his ties to San Diego, Norv Turner is probably next. Lol @footballady52 🏉

  4. christopher525 says: Dec 31, 2012 11:07 AM

Chan will now go back to college and thrive in mediocrity at that level once again.

  5. cags777 says: Dec 31, 2012 11:07 AM

Buddy Nix also needs to go. His comments throughout the season have shown that he is incapable of making a decision and sticking with it.

  6. dgoens3109 says: Dec 31, 2012 11:08 AM

I have no idea who the next coach is going to be but I hope Mike is right. It’s time to hire a real NFL Head Coach.

Who is next on the hit parade to helm a 5-11 season?

  8. jakec4 says: Dec 31, 2012 11:10 AM

A high end coach with a SB ring would have to be floored by an offer to come into that situation in Buffalo. The owner is 94, they have no QB, the GM gives out crazy contracts to at best okay players, and they have been the Patriots whipping boys for years.

It isn’t just a poor team it is a team with an entrenched losing culture without an upside.

Christmas has arrived to Bills nation 6 days late, but it’s a wonderful present. As long as Fitzpatrick goes too, I will be a very happy Bills fans.

  10. EJ says: Dec 31, 2012 11:11 AM

Nix is retiring after the Draft and Doug Whaley who worked with the Pittsburgh Steelers will be taking his spot. Rumor is that the Bills are interested in Kyle Shanahan. Anyway, the Nix/Gailey era is over.

  11. blackbug99 says: Dec 31, 2012 11:12 AM

YES!! Certainly a nice man, but Buffalo has had many of those. Mularkey even took the guys out for burgers @ McD’s. As far as “Offensive Genius,” goes. If I had heard “Master of the Screen” one more time…..well I won’t say. Dave is next……where was the Deeeeeeeeeeeefense? Time to move on!!

Yeah right, and I’ve got a bridge to sell you.

Wilson was a great owner in his day but has been a total failure at running a modern NFL franchise as the sport changed and he didn’t. The achievements of the Bills during the last 10 years demonstrate this quite well.

The Bills will continue to do horribly until Wilson gives up his death grip on the team.

  14. gadzod says: Dec 31, 2012 11:15 AM

Christmas came a little late, but it came nonetheless!!!!! I wonder if Buddy Nix is next on the chopping block?

  15. siriusred67 says: Dec 31, 2012 11:18 AM

Gailey seems like a genuinely nice guy, but the team is simply not responding to him. They looked lifeless for most of the season, and they gave up too easily whenever they fell behind. His reliance on his “Good Ol’ Boys Club” as defensive coordinators was his major undoing.

  16. joepa722 says: Dec 31, 2012 11:19 AM

He is a CLASS ACT as a person…just isn’t cut out to be a head coach.

  17. descendency says: Dec 31, 2012 11:23 AM

I’m surprised Ralph Wilson hasn’t signed a 10 million dollar check (per year) to Bill Parcells to come and fix the team.

  18. johnnyhambone says: Dec 31, 2012 11:24 AM

time to reunite the dynamic duo of buddy nix and the bills new head coach marty schottenheimer. marty ball is on the way. get ready for the ‘gleam’.

  19. EJ says: Dec 31, 2012 11:24 AM

My replacement for Gailey would be someone who has already had some success at the Head Coaching position, not an Offensive or Defensive Coordinator looking to move up. The Bills have done way too much of the moving up of Coaches. Offer Bill Cowher 5% ownership of the team and most GM options to get him here in Buffalo.

  20. mcjon22 says: Dec 31, 2012 11:26 AM

No one wanted the job 3 years ago. So why would anyone with a pedigree, regardless of money, want it now?

  21. bills56shout says: Dec 31, 2012 11:27 AM

I love to bring Andy Reid in and let him act as coach and GM. Bills need an experienced coach. Hiring coordinators hasn’t worked out too well for us. 13 years and counting

  22. alewatcher says: Dec 31, 2012 11:31 AM

Stupid hire in the first place, along with Buddy Nix.

Bills should have stuck with Perry Fewell for at least a season after he took over. Gaily’s scheme changes didn’t play to the Bills strengths, and he managed to screw up their defense along the way, which had always been one of the few bright spots on the Bills.

  23. dannymac17 says: Dec 31, 2012 11:33 AM

    and CJ Spiller said “Finally”

  24. xxxfixxxerxxx says: Dec 31, 2012 11:33 AM

Lovie Smith should be the man, can’t believe they fired him.

  25. phreakin says: Dec 31, 2012 11:40 AM

No solid coach is coming to the bills. As people have said they have no quarterback and even drafting one would take 2-3 years to do anything. I do like the Kyle Shannahan thought though

  26. FinFan68 says: Dec 31, 2012 11:41 AM

Hire Love Smith as HC and maybe Norv Turner as OC. Go get Alex Smith. They would make the Bills respectable again while the roster is churned.

  27. azcardinal32 says: Dec 31, 2012 11:41 AM

Lovie Smith to Buffalo. Its perfect, a master of the 4-3 defense, imagine what he could do with kyle williams, Dareaus, and Mario Williams. He would require a good OC tho

  28. bills56shout says: Dec 31, 2012 11:43 AM

Bills should be a team a coach would want to coach. Young, some talent on the roster, easy to mold into the type of team of that coach would want, Ralph has shown a willingness to spend money. Just need a QB.

  29. kelsey412 says: Dec 31, 2012 12:03 PM

Spiller is winded by chans firing

  30. tdrundmc says: Dec 31, 2012 12:06 PM

And in a typical Bills move, Dave Wannstedt will be promoted to head coach.

  31. hehateme2 says: Dec 31, 2012 12:09 PM

Top talent won’t want to go to Buffalo…. can you blame them?

  32. edavidberg says: Dec 31, 2012 12:25 PM

Lovie Smith with Norv as OC would be a great combination for Buffalo.

  33. lionsplayoffs says: Dec 31, 2012 12:42 PM

Not good to be the head coach of the most unpredictable team in football. Not surprised he got canned.

  34. bbking0420 says: Dec 31, 2012 12:47 PM

As a Buffalo Bills fan living in chicago, i am a fan of both the bills and bears!!!! Lovie Smith makes the most sense for Buffalo. He can transform that 4-3 defense in to a monster, and since Ron Rivera will probaly get the axe in Carolina he can join Lovie in Buffalo as defensive coordinator. They had many good years in Chicago together. I am so sick of my Buffalo Bills and Chicago Bears coming in 2nd to the Patriots and Packers every year!!!!!! The Bills and Bears are so talented in players.. I bleed Chicago and Buffalo Football, they have the best fans in the world!!! Go Bills and Bears !!!!!!

  35. coltzfan166 says: Dec 31, 2012 12:49 PM

If I were Nix, I would try to get Greg Roman from San Fran so that they can lock up Alex Smith too.

  36. my2cents27 says: Dec 31, 2012 12:58 PM

I seriously hope the Bills hire Rod Marinelli and bring in Matt Millen as GM. I could seriously see Mr. Wilson making this move!

Keep your fingers crossed boys and girls!!

  37. dirtyharry1971 says: Dec 31, 2012 1:07 PM

Hire Mike Singletary, id love to be there at the first half time when he drops his pants and shows the team how well they are playing.

  38. stevenwilliams2013 says: Dec 31, 2012 1:14 PM

Anytime your head coach grows a beard, it’s not a good sign.

  39. manilarizzo says: Dec 31, 2012 1:17 PM

How do you root for two teams?

That’s like a cheap insurance policy in case one team sucks.

As a lifeline skins fan since 76 I don’t get it. I enjoyed the glory years and then dealt with absolute depression for the past 18+ but never did I say hey, I’m from the DMV so while the Skins are pitiful, i will pull for the ravens instead.

I’m not hating….I just bleed so much for one team, I’d feel like I was cheating them if I pulled in the slightest for another.

Anyway, as far as the Kyle chatter, I don’t see him leaving his RG3 fun when he has Dads gig lined up for him 2-3 years from now.

  40. peepeetoucher says: Dec 31, 2012 1:20 PM

I thought Super Mario was supposed to take you to the promise land Buffalo? I remember how every Bills fan came out of the woodwork and started talking trash like they were a sure playoff team now that he signed. I also remember everyone saying that the D line is the best in football. 100 million dollars for a player that is not a game changer is absurd. Good luck with him and his cap charge in future years.

  41. ravensfan996 says: Dec 31, 2012 1:59 PM

Nothing against Gailey, but here’s a guy that gets hired to be fired. I don’t understand how he keeps getting coaching gigs. His resume doesn’t warrant keep getting second chances.

  42. kappy32 says: Dec 31, 2012 2:12 PM

I think his inability, or unwillingness, to make Spiller the main RB over Jackson despite Spiller having one of the best RB season’s in NFL history YPC-wise (6.5 YPC) sealed his fate.

  43. kappy32 says: Dec 31, 2012 2:17 PM

You don’t want a coach already with a SB ring. If history & trends are any indicator, and I firmly believe they are, there has NEVER been a head coach who has won a Super Bowl with 2 teams. There have been numerous instances where a SB winning coach has gone to a new team on a big contract & he never reached the promised-land again. I honestly believe that is why Cowher & Gruden are still unemployed. Teams believe in trends & history, as I do. If Buffalo wants to win, they would be smart to hire a coach with a solid résumé, but one who hasn’t won a SB before.

  44. kgun80 says: Dec 31, 2012 2:47 PM

Please Please Please!!! Don’t hire Norv Turner!! Don’t hire a coordinator get a proven head coach this train is off the rails. We have a decent offensive line a very good possession receiver and a RB who has star potential. You have a few decent pieces on defense. With good coaching this line can be much better. Get a couple decent LBs and you can have a good D.

And the biggest thing Bills fans are forgetting is Byrd has to be resigned!!! Besides Kyle Williams he’s the only player on defense that has been a consistent big play guy for more than one season!!

  45. jaysfan64 says: Dec 31, 2012 4:55 PM

The Bills need to totally change their organizational culture…it seems as though the rot that’s set in is almost acceptable at the top, and it filters down to the locker room…they need more former players involved than Kelly and Thurman (I think their message and presence has become stale)…mentalities need to be reversed and the deadwood needs to be cut loose…as to the answer – I think they’ll have to look outside the organization to find it..get someone as a football czar who isn’t afraid to think outside the box and be innovative…and for God’s sake, find a QB somewhere…

  46. dtjano says: Dec 31, 2012 5:08 PM

Kyle Shanahan was horrible til they got RG3. Gailey was the worst coach in the NFL by a mile.

    Be bold get Kevin Sumlin.

  47. tubbman27 says: Dec 31, 2012 8:27 PM

Who didn’t see this coming when they hired him? NFL teams need to stop with the retreads. Especially mildly successful ACC ones.

  48. tubbman27 says: Dec 31, 2012 8:28 PM

Bring on Norv Turner… Sad but possibly and probably true.
