Brandon Browner reinstated to Seahawks

Brandon Marshall, Brandon Browner AP

With his four-week suspension for a violation of the league’s performance-enhancing drug policy now complete, cornerback Brandon Browner has been reinstated to the Seattle Seahawks active roster.

Seattle placed cornerback Walter Thurmond on injured reserve to make room for Browner on the roster.

Browner has missed the last four games for Seattle after dropping his appeal following the Seahawks 23-17 overtime win over the Chicago Bears on Dec. 2. While fellow starter Richard Sherman continued to fight (and win) his appeal, Browner served his suspension in order to be eligible to return for the postseason.

It was actually a bit of a blessing-in-disguise for the Seahawks (though maybe not for Browner’s checkbook). Seattle won all four games in Browner’s absence and were able to have rookie Jeremy Lane and second-year cornerback Byron Maxwell get extended game experience for the first time in their careers. Now with Browner returning, head coach Pete Carroll feels more confident in the depth he had behind his two starters.

“If he’s not quite right or if he doesn’t get off to a good start during the week, we’ve got other guys who can play for him,” Carroll said. “But we’re going to give him a heck of a chance to play. We’re thrilled to get him back and we’ll see what happens.

Thurmond couldn’t get back from a hamstring strain suffered during practice three weeks ago. He returned to limited participation in practice last Thursday before re-aggravating the injury.

“He kind of re-tweaked it again last week and that means it’s going to be a couple of weeks again,” Carroll said. “…We’re just going to have to ice him for a while here and when we get him back he’ll be able to have a good off-season and get ready to go.”

Browner made the Pro Bowl as an alternate for Seattle in 2011 in his first year back in the NFL after four seasons in the Canadian Football League. Browner played in all 12 games before the suspension and compiled 44 tackles, three interceptions and three forced fumbles for Seattle.

Seattle also made some adjustments to their practice squad on Monday. The Seahawks signed defensive tackle Vaughn Meatoga and re-signed cornerback Ron Parker to the practice squad after releasing him last Thursday. The team released wide receiver Corbin Louks to make room for Meatoga and Parker on the squad.

    Cornerbacks on PED’s–Seattle’s mojo.

The cheating will catch up with them before the season ends.

It’s been a rough couple of years for Thurmond. But he still has a chance to be special. He certainly doesn’t lack for skills. Only 25, he’s got to figure out a way to stay healthy–especially with preventable soft-tissue issues.

“Meat toga” seems like a pretty good name for a defensive tackle.

If the hawks can stop the run, they will win. They better keep Wilson upright. 6 sacks won’t work in the playoffs.

  26. themackstrong says: Jan 1, 2013 12:22 AM

What depth we have these days. 2nd, 3rd 4th CBS out 4 weeks and Hawks are the number 1 rated defense in NFL. Browner back helps big time in this run. Redskin fans that are talking smack gotta be scared. If Rg3 played in NFC West he would have been out on a stretcher game 4, that’s how aggressive and athletic each team is out here. Skins are not gonna bring heat like we haven’t already seen. Plus they don’t have the secondary to hold up all game. Morris is legit and RG3 has to be held in check extending plays and the Hawks move on.

  27. avr29 says: Jan 1, 2013 12:25 AM

It’ll be most interesting to see how the Redskins handle a physical team like Seattle. A team that wants to punch you in the mouth on every play. It’ll also be interesting to see how well ET and Bam Bam Kam match-up against the zone read. This game will be won in the trenches.

  28. themagicfanguy says: Jan 1, 2013 12:52 AM

Well, considering the Hawks can’t beat quality teams on the road this is already decided. No, the bears don’t count.

  32. randallflagg52 says: Jan 1, 2013 1:16 AM

Hard to root for the skins because of their delusional fans. Not sure what fan base is worse, these Landover Maryland redskins or the steelers.

You forgot about Santana Moss, who is the matchup that scares me the most. Hope Trufant/Lane/Maxwell are up to the task.

As for Browner, just YouTube search “Brandon Browner Cardinals” and marvel at the one man wrecking crew.

Rewind…’hawks destroyed the ‘niners a couple of weeks ago. Plus, the ‘hawks beat the Rams the other day, and it was their toughest game of the month…while the ‘niners had two opportunities to beat the Rams this season, and FAILED both times.

    I think I got it right…so, do I get a cookie?

Lots of boasting about a team that couldn’t win its own division.

    Achieve something.

  41. gregmorris78 says: Jan 1, 2013 9:15 AM

Skins have HAD to win each of the last seven games. Each game has been a playoff game with big wins on big stages. Pressure is Robert griffins friend. All of these games have been win or you’re out for the skins.

Many of the playoff coaches are trying to scheme in one and done mentality.

Seattle is a good team but the pressure could get to them, skins are mentally solid – and have their own version of home field advantage ask giants, ravens and cowboys

  42. blackfootkiller says: Jan 1, 2013 11:09 AM

5 of those vaunted wins for the Skins 7 game winning streak came against sub 500 teams…
Seattle will hand 45 on them…
    Go Hawks!

  43. gregmorris78 says: Jan 1, 2013 12:05 PM

That’s .500 or less teams which Seattle has played 10 of this season including losses to miami and the cardinals. That includes skins wins over four division matchups – three on the biggest stages. Doesn’t mean Seattle is a bad team and I think you’re looking at the wrong indicators for success right now.

  44. beastmode5150 says: Jan 1, 2013 2:16 PM

  48. majskinsfan says: Jan 1, 2013 9:33 PM

Seahawks are talking a lot of smack for a team coached by Pete Carroll. What is his record in the playoffs?

  49. gregmorris78 says: Jan 2, 2013 12:00 AM

Seahawks have a nice recent playoff history beating previous skins regimes a couple times

It’s a tall order for washington no doubt

The 49ers seem a little off balance ever since permanently switching qbs

  50. drstrangehawk says: Jan 2, 2013 1:18 PM

The first half of the season… Throw it out. The Seahawks have found their groove. Doesn’t matter that they didn’t win the division (by a half game), look at all of the teams that won the SB as wildcards. Like the 2006 Steelers. All of you Seahawk haters can gloat when they lose, until then be very afraid of this teams momentum right now. Oh, and SF fans, you still have to win a playoff game or two to get to us. Personally I think you’ll be one and done.
