First of all, Jay Cutler (29-13 in his last 42 starts) was not the problem, without him the Bears go 6-10 instead of 10-6…And Tillman was great, but so were Jennings, Melton, and Peppers.

If Cutler is the problem,
how many Superbowls did the Bears win before he came along. Answer 1 and that was over 25 years ago.Cutler may not be a “franchise qb”but he’s still the best qb the bears have had for decades.

Smith has enough on his resume to simple be of interest to teams. The actual abuse of the Rooney Rule is that every damn time a black coach gets interviewed a bunch of half-wits think it is some kind of affirmative action thing. He is qualified for the damn job. The Bears have had four OCs in five years, really great for a stable offense. Their O-line is crappy at best, and as far as I know Smith didn’t make the personnel decisions for the Bears. Not saying it wasn’t time for a change, but he isn’t being talked to for the RR.

Bottom line, he is a very lousy in-game coach. The team wastes timeouts – at least a couple in the first quarter. His challenges are horrible. He does not make any halftime adjustments.

He makes bad decisions – like the 4th down call to go for it this year against Seattle in the beginning of the 2nd quarter. I knew that would come back to haunt the Bears. On top of it all, the bears ran it when they were getting anything on the ground.

His bend but not break defense that relies on turnovers counts on luck and mistakes by other teams. This works great against bad teams, but stinks against a good offense.

While he was not the GM, he had a hand in very poor drafts.

Lovie needs a pulse. He stands there like a mope when he needs to work the refs and fire up the team.

In the end, he was very average, and that does not bring championships.

He seems like a good person, but he is not great coach. He was unable to hide behind another coordinator getting fired again

So Lovie has no one to blame but himself; there is no way the Bears (or most other NFL teams) would have dismissed a guy they had just signed to contract extension.

Smith will find other work; not every team is going to get their 1st or even 2nd choice and Lovie will look like a better option than an “Assistant Coach Choice D.” But Emery had little choice; the clock is going to start ticking on him and he may as well have it be with his guy. Lovie’s record just wasn’t good enough for Emery to stick HIS neck out.
