After watching the Colts today I’m fully realizing what an epic failure the Dolphin organization is. The Colts, who were in much worse shape at the end of last year, have turned things around in ONE SEASON.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BS. The Colts did everything they could to get that first pick. They made some good moves this year but they would have done most of them with a healthy Manning returning.
Ireland has done a decent job. There is talent on this team and Philbin/Ireland are capable of gathering the right players to make a difference. The atmosphere on this team stunk and is starting to change. The mindset needed to change for the better. It has. That is why talented players like Marshall and Davis were traded. Talent is pointless if it isn't reliable. The main thing I disagree with Philbin on is his stance on team captains. I believe that they are needed to help jell the team. Informal leaders are necessary and giving them (the right ones) formal titles and status can help the coaches get the buy-in necessary. Let's wait to judge Ireland/Philbin until after next year.
I firmly believe that Ireland is just doing what he is told to do. Parcells called the shots until he left and then Ross has told Ireland to keep the budget as low as possible. This year they will fail to sign our free agents, which will set us back again. After we sign the rookies we will have millions left under the cap and all of the free agents will be inking somewhere else. Ireland's low ball offers coupled with his callous questioning will work in tandem with the teams loosing record to motivate the free agents to get out of Miami as quickly as possible.
Loosers find a way to loose!
Jeff Ireland is a horrible GM and Ryan Tannehill runs like a girl. There I said it.
I've been a Dolphins fan since 1970 and I am embarressed of the product put on the field once again.
Brandon Marshall was honest and he gets called a cancer. He hated playing for Jeff Ireland so he doesn't. He's lights out in Chicago!
Reggie Bush was the best player on the field this year and Brian Hartline played with a lot of heart.
Vontae Davis (1st Round pick 2009)and a host of former Dolphins are going to the playoffs again this year, where is Pat White (2nd round pick 2009) playing this weekend Mr. Ireland???
Russell Wilson was the 12th pick in Round 3 for heaven's sakes, the 75th overall pick!!!
Odrick & Misi??? C'mon Mr. Ross show us you think of this team as more than a tax deduction, step up and put a winner on the field and don't let Mr. Ireland squander all that Salary Cap money. Make Miami a place where quality football players want to come and play again.
I like how so many give Ireland props for the draft picks and cap space we have next year. Yeah, we have those because of his moves that put us there in the first place. He also created holes & depth problems for us this year in getting those picks. Oh, and while the cap space is nice, 5 of our best players are FAs.
We need a WR. We had one in Marshall, but created a need by trading him away. For two 3rd round picks. Ireland will be celebrated for this even though we won't get anything close to Marshall-level production from those picks. How good is Ireland in the 2nd & 3rd rounds?Egnew, our 3rd rounder from this year, didn't even DRESS until week 17. Yes, I'm sure Ireland can replace Brandon Marshall with who HE finds in the 3rd round.
We traded away Vontae Davis, who admittedly isn't a star - but for a team with a depleted secondary- he was a quality piece. We used a first round pick on him, got a second in return (turns out to be a low 2nd too), and Ireland is congratulated for getting us draft picks for 2013. Meanwhile, at the end of the year we were picking guys up off the waiver wire just to have warm bodies for the secondary.
He gets entirely too much credit from some fans. What he's celebrated for here is being in a position he created for himself in the first place, and he weakened the team in the process.
Let's wait to see what he does with those picks & cap money before we sing his praises.
wannstache, the Colts were a playoff team who tanked the season for the number 1 pick. You can argue that the Dolphins turned around when they went from 1-15 to 11-5 and division winners in one season, which was more impressive considering that they hadn't been to the playoffs for several years before that while the Colts have been in the playoffs the whole decade. Dolphins have a mess to clean up at almost every position from previous regimes, all the Colts had to do was replace their old quarterback.
The one important thing to note concerning the Dolphins that could be observed from their game against the Pats is this. Despite being blanked they never quit. The team is getting better and they play a tough game. Many teams folding up shop weeks ago but this group did not.
Hey guys, Ryan Tannehill is easily on par with RGIII, Luck and Wilson. Yeah, I said it. He had virtually NO TALENT around him and won 7 games. Defenses had to key on Reggie Bush and the rest of the time it was jam the weak WR corps and try to kill RT.
Give the kid Wilson's O-Line and Lynch, Reggie Wayne and T.Y. Hilton or Alfred Morris and the Redskins WRs and he puts up much, much better numbers.
7 WINS with Marlon Moore as a main offensive weapon is outstanding.
Say what you will about Ireland but look at what he did this year.
He moved players out that Philbin didn't want and didn't overreact in signing our own pending free agents.
We have 10 picks and $45 mil in cap space.
He didn't make any panic moves that a GM could make to keep the heat off of himself and instead positioned the team for a good makeover in 2013.
It's almost as if the AFC East teams are OK with New England pounding on them year after year. They've given up I guess. I guess I sort of don't blame them. It's not easy when you've got Brady, Manning, The Ravens (great front office) and the Steelers (good all around most years) taking up 4 playoff spots almost every year.
And he should be safe.
Mr. Ross included Ireland as a major cog of last year's coaching search, and allowed him to stick around to draft the team's QB of the present/future.
I understand that many Dolfans have no faith in Ireland, but the first thing any new GM will want to do is pick his own coach and his own quarterback. Unless you would like to see Miami throw away Philbin and Tannehill, you have to hold on to Ireland- who is the one responsible for accumulating the extra draft picks and cap space the Dolphins will enjoy this offseason.
Firing Ireland along with Sparano could have made sense, but seeing as we've gone this far already, it only makes sense to let him finish the project he set in motion.
"Yeah, the Fins should definitely keep the guy who traded away Brandon Marshall so he can go out and find some good receivers…"
Good thing Miami didn't trade him to playoff team to rub it in even worse
The dolphins had new offensive and defensive schemes, a new staff, a rookie QB, lost 4 starters from a suspect roster and won 7 games.
Overall, you would have to say the transition went rather well.
I think he deserves this shot now that he is fully out of that waste of skin Tunas bloated shadow. He's loaded with cap space and picks, its all on him now without anyone else to blame. It sure feel nice to go into an off season not looking for a GM or coach or Qb! Now focus on the task at hand Jeff, earn your position and trust, we have waited too long.
I know we need a #1 WR.
But to me the biggest hole in this team is a CB. Smith won't tackle. Carroll is beaten like a drum consistently. We actually need two CBs.
And though we will likely overpay, resign Long, move Martin back to RT. Get a RG.
Disappointed. This is a franchise changing off season for the Fins, and someone has to produce. Critical to make proper use of the 5 draft picks (in top 100) and 50M+ of cap space. This off season will define the Fins for the next 5-7 years.
