Bills’ Kyle Williams likely needs Achilles surgery again

For the second consecutive offseason, Bills defensive tackle Kyle Williams likely needs Achilles tendon surgery.

Last offseason, Williams had surgery on his left Achilles. This season, Williams has been playing all year through a painful injury to his right Achilles, and he expects to have surgery again. The good news is Williams doesn’t think he’s in as bad shape this year as he was last year.

“Last year that fluid had gotten into the bone in my foot and my whole Achilles was super inflamed,” Williams told “So they were scared because the Achilles was hanging on by a thread. They thought it was going to rupture. This one is the same deal, but it’s not that bad.”

Despite playing through pain in his heel and sitting out every practice over the last 11 weeks of the season, Williams started all 16 games in 2012. Williams said he was in so much pain that he couldn’t tolerate his shoe rubbing against his heel, so he had the training staff cut out the entire heel of his right shoe and then tape his foot into the shoe.

“There is a bone spur rubbing on it,” Williams said. “So we just tried to manage it and get through the season.”

Williams, who just finished the second year of a six-year, $39 million contract, said the medical staff will take some time evaluating his condition, but he expects to have surgery again. And he expects to be ready to go for the first minicamp in four months.

Kyle Williams is one of the most underrated players in the game today. He has gone through many games in major pain, he’s as tough as nails.

One has to think how much this injury compromised his play on the field and had some impact on the Bills D giving up astronomical point totals this season.

I admire Kyle for playing hurt and being the leader on the defensive line but he and/or the Bills coaching staff should have realized that he was more of a detriment to the team than an inspirational asset.
