This is coming from a guy who posed in a tux, standing next to his star RB who was wearing a wedding dress! Ditka's input on this matter holds no merit at all! He did bring a superbowl to the Bears, and also managed to blow a potential dynasty because he chose to put himself in the limelight rather than stick to the plan and remain humble and hungry enough to win 4 more with that awesome group of players! Ditka brings nothing to the table regarding football insight. His time is passed!

Coach Ditka may not be right about alot of things but he chose all the right coaches during his tenure(Buddy Ryan) for example. And Lovie has made the Bears competitive every year. Though we've only been to the playoffs once in 7 yrs since the superbowl. We've had relatively good seasons where nearly 70% of all other teams haven't had nearly the competitive nature in the club house as we have. Besides, we did have a 10 win season and where do they fire a coach for that.

It seems like the only franchise in the NFL that doesn’t panic just because the team didn’t make the playoffs is the Pittsburgh Steelers, and they are perrennial winners who will likely be back in the hunt next season. Why do you suppose that is? Because the ownership and management of the team recognize that stability breeds consistency, which breeds winning. As a lifelong Cleveland Browns fan, I can tell you the grass is almost NEVER greener.

Having the same coach for 9 years and then firing him for missing the playoffs 5 of the last 6 seasons is not panic.... it is reality.

Since Ditka is talking about dumb moves....

How about giving the ball to William Perry instead of Walter Payton on the goal line in the Super Bowl?

How about playing Doug Flutie at QB against the Redskins in the 1986 playoffs and throwing away what should have been another Super Bowl championship?

I am a life long Bears fan but I have no problem in saying shut up and go away Mike.
Not all of us live in 1985.

Good move by Chicago. Necessary move too. Gotta beat the Packers to keep that job.

Ditka misses the point. Even if other teams cooperated, and Bears got into the playoffs, who here thinks they are going anywhere? Squeaking in (thanks to other teams) and promptly losing is hardly any different than not making it anyway.

Lovie's failure is not establishing any consistent offense. Forte runs, and Cutler throws to Marshall. That's all they have. Their record is deceiving....early season their defense excelled at takeaways, later in the season, against better teams, we saw the real Bears.

I was at the Bears vs Vikes game in early Dec...once Cutler threw 2 picks and put his team in a hole, they never looked like they were coming back. And they didn't.

After 8 years on the same team if the head coach and the GM couldn’t work better as a team on team building it was Lovie’s job to take his side and make it more public. That might not be his style but look where it got him.
They get a new GM and what happens on the field. Another 2nd half of the season slide occurs and the Bears continue the poor performance in big games, especially against the Pack. The Bears may have to get worse before they improve but they were on track for continued subtle mediocrity (the land between no play-offs and no first, second or third draft choices in the 1st round) under Lovie.

Lovie’s calling the last Packers game not a must win was the coffin nail along with the performance against the Pack since 2009. No clear focus on offense plus limited ability to work with the GM on trades or draft picks to improve weak spots. Needed to do a much better job of staffing. Last, but not least, the world’s worst post-game press conferences combined with a way too placid sideline demeanor. While Lovie gets paid no matter what the final score Bears fans want some victories in important games. His too calm sideline appearances when the Bears pull 2 or 3 stupid plays in a row on offense drives Bears fanatics into convolutions.

In his next gig (which he will get ASAP since he does understand defense) he should remember victories rather than being liked by all the players on the team is the real end goal. A popularity contest it ain't.

Lovie Smith was/is a great coach.

But he was also a lame duck...

The GM wanted is own guy for the job. And he had only a couple years on his contract...

They had to settle for Mike Martz 2 years ago, and Mike Tice last year. No O.C. worth a darn was going to sign on for a short-term deal.

Now, at least, hopefully he's learned a bit. He can go someplace with a new sense of security. (As much as there is for an NFL head coach) And maybe get a good OC. And a GM that can provide a little stability. And he can build a good balanced team.

But he was also a lame duck…

The GM wanted is own guy for the job. And he had only a couple years on his contract…

They had to settle for Mike Martz 2 years ago, and Mike Tice last year. No O.C. worth a darn was going to sign on for a short-term deal.

Now, at least, hopefully he’s learned a bit. He can go someplace with a new sense of security. (As much as there is for an NFL head coach) And maybe get a good OC. And a GM that can provide a little stability. And he can build a good balanced team.

It seems like the only franchise in the NFL that doesn't panic just because the team didn't make the playoffs is the Pittsburgh Steelers, and they are perrennial winners who will likely be back in the hunt next season. Why do you suppose that is? Because the ownership and management of the team recognize that stability breeds consistency, which breeds winning. As a lifelong Cleveland Browns fan, I can tell you the grass is almost NEVER greener.

Ditka calling this stupid, that's rich. I guess he recognizes stupid, as he traded his entire draft for Ricky Williams.

This is the same coach who if he could developed even an average QB, outside of the one year McMahon was healthy, they could have probably won at least one more Superbowl.

To use Ditka's own words on the furor by some over Lovie's firing, "this too shall pass."

Ditka is probably right: had the Vikings lost, Smith would still be the Bears HC.

But they didn't. And you can place blame for being in that position (where one win by another team decides your job fate) squarely on Smith and no one else.

It's like whenever one call seems to go against a team and they lose: there are always *plenty* of other opportunities that were missed that could have obviated the need for that call to go that team's way to win them the game.

Smith had five seasons of the last six where he had 16 games in each that each played a part in his team making the playoffs or not. And in those five seasons he failed.

He missed the playoffs five times in the last six seasons, end of story. For Ditka to apparently not acknowledge that is cherry-picking an awful lot.
