Getty ImagesWhen it was announced last week that Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew would have foot surgery, there were two immediate reactions.
The first was that it seemed like an obvious outcome after the foot injury kept him out of the final 10 games of the regular season. The second was confusion as to why Jones-Drew waited so long to have surgery that will now keep him out of most or all of the offseason program when it never seemed like he progressed past where he was shortly after the initial injury.
Jones-Drew said Monday that surgery was an option at the time he got hurt, but the decision was to wait a little to see how it healed. Jones-Drew never healed and said that they waited too long to make the decision to have the operation.
“I should have had it a little earlier than when I did but it’s just something that you learn from,” Jones-Drew said, via the Florida Times-Union. “You’ve just got to keep going.”
Whether he’ll keep going in Jacksonville will be something for the team’s next general manager to figure out. Jones-Drew, who held out unsuccessfully for a new deal last year, is set to make $4.95 million in the final year of his deal with a team heading in a new direction.
