Rex remains silent, skips town

AP

It’s fitting, we suppose, that the latest drama from a team that talks too much is the fact that the team isn’t talking at all.  And a head coach who never is at a loss for words is saying nothing.

Rex Ryan has yet to address the media, in any fashion, since the team finished a disappointing 6-10 season and G.M. Mike Tannenbaum was fired.   (Other than Ryan’s post-game press conference.)  According to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, Rex has since skipped town.

Per Mehta, Ryan isn’t at the team’s facility and he has flown out of town.

Ryan’s Monday press conference was scuttled, and he didn’t show for a radio spot with the team’s flagship station.  It’s still unclear whether Rex is keeping quiet because his status remains in flux, or because the Jets have opted for silence as the G.M. search proceeds.

League policy requires the head coach to meet with the media at least once during the week after the team’s final game.  He has three days left.

  1. I think it’s pretty clear that the firm that was hired to conduct the GM search is doing this. The Jets wouldn’t be remaining silent on anything otherwise. It’s far too logical.

  2. I would skip town too……what do u want Rex to say…….he’s got Mark Sanchez as his QB……he’s probably flying around to find a new QB….what a mess….he’ll address media by Friday and ill be watching that one…..Go Pats!!

  3. “It’s fitting, we suppose, that the latest drama from a team that talks too much is the fact that the team isn’t talking at all.”

You mean the team that you, the media, talk too much about.

  4. Rex Ryan is on a short rope with ownership as he has lost a lot of his swagger since he promised a AFC championship. He needs to stop being so brash.

  5. new GM may want to go a different route…So Rex isnt going to give the media anything to use against him if he is fired….stay tuned…This is not over….

I say give Rex 1 more year with a GOOD OC and see what happens for 2013…Nothing improves he is calling defense for the Ravens again in 2014.

  6. Rex skipped town at the beginning of the season.

Who cares, whatever Rex says now means nothing, it is up to new GM to do what he wants. Rex needs to polish his interviewing skills.

As for media, I feel bad for you guys, what are you going to do for the next few days? Al of the sudden your job isn’t so easy.

  7. He must be with all of the loud mouth Jets fans that are also MIA. Hope they all enjoyed the seasons misery.

  8. honestly…who cares about the Jets. They are a horrific franchise.

How do you say Tony Romo in spanish…Mark Sanchez…

  9. Not at all a Jets fan, or even a Rex fan for that matter. However, its not his fault that his QB never improved and he lost Revis. The guy has had some success and he should keep his job.

  10. Hey dontcensormebiatches! Shut up and leave town!

Ok that being said, maybe Rex went to visit a potential GM that needs a little “push” to talk turkey with the New York Jets Management team?

  11. The Jets never fail to entertain. Here’s one interpretation of the strange silence is the following. Forcing him to be silent, maybe Woody is trying to get Rex to quit, and not have to pay Rex the $6MM they owe him.

Here’s another possibility. The Jets are going to be horrible next year. 67% of their cap is tied up in 7 players who have untradeable, uncutable contracts. They have a bad roster now that is going to get worse this off season. So why subject a new coach to that. Let Rex pay penance by coaching a 2-14 team.

Now the new GM will have the benefit of 2 straight drafts in the top 10 and a much better cap situation in 2014. Now you are in a better position to recruit a top level HC who at least will have a chance to compete in the AFCE. Plus the new GM gets the added benefit of not sharing in the blame for what’s to come in 2013.

A third scenario is that Ryan may be a buffoon, but he isn’t dumb. He knows what’s coming next year, and that he’ll be gone. He’s doing his best to get fired so he doesn’t have to go down in flames. Right now he MIGHT get someone to give him another shot at a HCing job. If he goes 2-14 next season that list will shrink to zero.

Listen I can speak for ALL Pats fans. There is nothing we wish for more that another year with Rex Ryan running the Jets.

  12. Pats fans- We all know its your time to pretend your going to win a SB again this year, but deep down you know its not happening,’
As far as bagging on the Jets, if NE lost both their best offensive and defensive players to injury (like NY Did) you would be in the same spot they are without Brady and Woolfork.
What goes around, comes around. Baltimore beats you at home in your 1st game. Just like Rex and the Jets did 2 years ago.
Admit it, you peak in November.

  13. The Jets are the Lindsay Lohans of the NFL: always in the papers, always for the wrong reasons.

You have got to be kidding me. The Pats are the most consistently successful team in the league for the past decade. They’re a model franchise and are in the running for the championship each and every year….and all you can do is turn around and spew this sort of weak sour grapes??? How low rent and how pathetic. Yup….a Jets fan. Makes perfect sense.

  15. I would love it if the anonymous self-appointed team spokesmen (“I speak for all [insert-team-name] fans …”) would stop doing that.

Btw, @backindasaddle, if the Pats “peak in November”, when exactly do the Jets peak, July? I guess the Pats did nearly win the division in November, when they throttled the Jets in the Meadowlands…

11 of the past 12 AFC East titles, 5 Superbowl appearances. Were you even born when the Jets won their only superbowl?

  16. Getting ahead of myself a little but with the first pick in the 2014 NFL draft, the NY Jets select…..
