Reggie White and his Green Bay Packers played suffocating defense yesterday in a 16-12 NFC playoff victory over the Detroit Lions, holding Barry Sanders – the league’s rushing champion – from gaining so much as 1 yard rushing. The Packers held Sanders, the Lions’ all-pro running back who had darted and dashed through the 16-game season for 1,833 total yards and a 5.7-yard average carry, to minus-1 yard rushing. When Sanders had finished his third Packers game of 1994 his statistic sheet looked like something left over from the Eagles’ season: 13 carries, minus-1 yard rushing, zero touchdowns.

Nobody.

I haven’t seen anyone diminish what Manning did this year. He’s a great QB, the Broncos are a great team, but there are other QBs who had incredibly similar seasons, one could argue Rodgers had a better statistical year. He did not stand out among his peers the way that Peterson did this year. Period.

That’s weird because each of those three had a worse record than the Broncos this year. And all three had worse records this year than last year. Manning’s team improved by 5 games. Interchangable my foot. I just can’t for the life of me understand why everyone wants to diminish Manning and what he’s accomplished with the Broncos. Is it Denver? The Broncos? Manning? It’s a great city, a great football city, Manning is a great player/leader/person. It must just be jealousy, I suppose. Envy that gets twisted into hate. Oh well.

That said, I still have no problem with Peterson winning the MVP. Dude is beast.

Answer: Not as good as AP, not even close. Remember this, AP was taken out of 3-4 games to “rest” this season… and he ended 9 yards short of the record. He’ll break it next year.

The QB touches the ball on every single play. They can change the play, adjust the protection. There is loads of defense interpretation. They remember route trees and receiver progressions. They take far less hits than running backs. The shelf life is much longer. Etc, etc, etc. Manning is possibly (likely?) the best of all time at the most important position in sports. So stop already. Peterson is great, elite even. Manning is otherworldly and anyone football person with a lick of sense would take him over Peterson.
