Reid’s new five-year deal includes final say on KC personnel

Getty Images

Not that this was a great surprise, after the Chiefs hired coach Andy Reid and fired general manager Scott Pioli the same day, but Reid has the run of the place.

Reid’s agent, Bob LaMonte told USA Today’s Jarrett Bell that Reid’s new five-year contract gives Reid control over all football operations.

How that jives with finding a GM remains to be seen. As Florio pointed out last night, the issue of “final say” is a significant one, as it applies to Packers director of football operations John Dorsey.

The Packers could technically block that move unless Dorsey’s contract is up or they choose to release him from it. Getting Tom Heckert’s name on a doorplate is easier, since he’s unemployed.

Of course, none of this is news to those close to Reid, since getting that kind of control over personnel is likely much of what swung him toward the Chiefs.

He wants full control because he is awesome at coaching players. He shouldn’t have full control because while he is awesome with personnel he is horrible as a game day coach. he will get out-coached in meaningful games and thats his big down side.

Well, with all that power if he’s going to wash out of KC it’ll certainly happen quicker this way.

Andy Reid has won more playoff games in his tenure with the Eagles than the Chiefs have in their entire history. So Philly fans lets talk again next year when we see who’s better off since we’re both pretty much in the same 2012 boat

Man that is just sad but just like chiefs fans to forget the past and have delusional expectations every year. You’re still a 2-14 team, and gave full control to a guy who has already had that power stripped from him before and was just fired.

  19. mazblast says: Jan 4, 2013 8:08 PM

No matter how it turns out, it can’t be a downgrade from recent Chiefs’ history. I mean, seriously, has any team other than the Bengals had as long a streak of not winning a playoff game? If any, there aren’t many.

Michael Vick is familiar with the Midwest after serving 23 months in Levenworth. Add in FA Greg Jennings & Donald Driver to go along with O-line help in the draft and KC doesn’t look as bad on paper than they did a week ago. Jamaal Charles, PPR stud in 2013. Maybe Bowe would even stay.

This is the 1st time the Kansas City Chiefs ever gave a head coach the “FINAL SAY”. But again. I think that what lead to the Chiefs to fire Carl Peterson 1st then fired Scott Pioli 2nd. I mean sometimes when you have a General Manager to make the final say. Then there are going to be alot of problems between the General Manager and Head Coach.

  32. pastabelly says: Jan 4, 2013 9:01 PM

Reid had final say with a team that lost 11 of its last 12 games. That’s a guy I want running my team.

  33. klutch14u says: Jan 4, 2013 9:09 PM

KC fan here, I really wanted Cowher and still do. Reid is a solid hire. I really think the guy needed a fresh start, I’ve thought that all year, he just looked tired. The NFC north was a completely different style of football and hopefully he can adjust to the AFC West. No matter how bad any AFC West teams looks any year they can knock each others teeth in (excluding this season).

Hopefully the guy can get a breath of new life in him, personally and professionally.

Still would have preferred Cowher but like him over any of the college coach homecoming queen’s of the year.

Please no Vick circus, no Morningweg or however it’s spelled. Give Norv Turner and Jim Haslett a call. Do NOT switch to a 4-3, we don’t need an instant 2 years of defensive rebuilding. Hali and Houston are studs.

Speaking as a Broncos fan… Good.

Reid is a good coach, who just was in Philly too long. I hope he turns things around for the Chiefs- the fans there deserve to have their team back, and I hope the old Broncos/Chiefs rivalry can begin again with both teams fighting for the division the way it should be, no more games like last week with no question over the results or anything to play for.

The Raiders have been rudderless for a decade, and not going anywhere anytime soon. The Chargers are on the decline and not coming back up anytime soon thanks to Smith/Norv. So here’s hoping that the Chiefs are turned around by Reid and we can get back to hating each other and enjoying the games the way it should be.

Not a fan of the ‘total control’ scenerio for head coaches. They’re too divided to focus on the things the head coach needs to focus on. That being said; a change of scenery for Reid is probably just what the doctor ordered. He was stale in Philly and dealing with the family tradedy didn’t make things easier by any stretch. Will be interesting to see how it goes.

  45. skinsfan2 says: Jan 4, 2013 9:51 PM

Unless Reid can somehow bring back Jim Johnson as his DC, I predict this think will be a disaster in KC, just like it’s been in Philly since Johnson’s unfortunate passing.

The fact is, as Reid has gotten more power, and hired mediocre at best D coordinators, his record has been terrible.

It seems if there was ever a candidate needing to take a year off, recharge the batteries, and see the game from a different angle for a bit, Reid is the poster child.

Just spewing things out makes you look like an idiot.

Reid did not draft Trot, Dawkins, or douglas – they where all their when he took over.

Once they where all gone along with Jim Johnson, he stopped winning…….did you notice that? He was 26-51 vs playoff teams in his 14 years…..that is just flat out bad.

He did however draft Grahm over E. Thomas 2 years ago. Danny Watkins last year, used a 2nd round pick on a S last year that is already out of the L. I could go on and on but i hope you get the point.

Douglas was a trade, and it was a trade under Rhodes. Dawk and Trot were both picks, but Rhodes picks

He also had nowhere near full control when he took McNabb, he was a first year HC taht was just an assistant (not even a coordinator). It’s not like Williams went next, he went #6. Just because the Philly media wantd him doesn’t mean it was some phsycic pick. Reid knew he wasn’t going to run the ball, why draft a RB with your first pick?

    Good try though

  60. tsutton84 says: Jan 5, 2013 12:06 AM

He failed at judging talent in Philly, so they give him total control in KC… Beautiful.

So what G.M. in his right mind would CONSIDER stepping into that formula?

At least Reid will get several “first overall picks”, the next few years, with that scenario… Arrowhead is going to be a sad place, for the next half-decade.

  61. shoeflypie says: Jan 5, 2013 12:07 AM

At this point in time all you can truly say is that Reid is the best coach the Chiefs have had since the last guy. Only time will tell if he is better than that. No point in blowing smoke over all the vagaries that can mess things up, or, that may make things work.

  62. raoool says: Jan 5, 2013 12:53 AM

Reid had a stellar 1st six years with Eagles then managed a little beter than .500 record for the next 8.

Early on he realized he needed help – and got it – from several very good coaches. As his self-image grew, he fooled himself into thinking he could pick / sign / hire anyone and his genius could raise them up; all culminating with the worst Eagles record since before he left Green Bay.

Still wish him well – in spite of the absolute hell this season was for we Eagles fans. If you didn’t watch, first… thank your lucky stars; but

And he is an actual coach – unlike that Crennel guy KC just got rid of. But I predict his 5 years – if he gets that far – will parallel his years in Philly. Quick success which will have everyone excited (hey KC’s got some ProBowl defensive players, Jamaal Charles, maybe Bowe…) then – as he puts his ‘mark’ on the team, more and more troubled players (his Jesus complex started with TO and only got worse with Vick and his ultimate submission to MeSean).

and umm.. jsally430 – Dawkins and Trotter were on the team before Reid arrived. he did preside over Trotter’s release (and subsequent return); but the handling of Dawkins – while Denver overpaid to draw him away – sucked the heart out of the D – maybe the whole team. (I suspect if Reid were making decisions for the Ravens, Ray Lewis would have been released a couple years back). I’ll give you McNabb over RastaMan; and Hugh Douglas was a nice free agent pickup but Sheldon Brown? you’re supporting personnel strengths with Sheldon Brown?

In fourteen years, the Eagles did sign some nice players. But review their drafts the last 4 – 5 years when Andy had ‘final say’ (how much input Heckert had early on, or Joe Banner later will never be known for sure) and you can see why they’ve quickly joined the dregs in 4-12 land.

Dawkins, Trotter, Douglas were all inherited from Ray Rhodes. They were all shown the door by Reid, as well as Sheldon Brown. You shoot yourself in the foot with your examples.

Yep, drafting McNabb and hiring Jim Johnson to coach defense were the best things Andy Reid have ever done. Here we are 14 years later and that’s easily the nicest thing one could say about him. The Eagles crashed and burned as soon as Jim Johnson died. Who will carry him in KC?

  65. riverhorsey says: Jan 5, 2013 2:08 AM

Jsally430- you have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about … the only two players you listed who were actually picked by Reid was McNabb and Sheldon Brown. Dawkins and Trotter were picked before Reid was in Philly and Hugh Douglas was picked by the Jets. Not to mention that all those players were late 90s early 2000s picks, Reids picks lately have been pretty terrible. Danny Watkins, Nate Allen, Jaiqwan Jarrett, and Brandon Graham instead of Earl Thomas or JPP just to name a few.

  67. aholland00 says: Jan 5, 2013 3:00 AM

    Hey jsally430
Andy Reid didn’t draft Dawkins, Trotter or Douglass. And as far as drafting McNabb, he could have traded that pick to the Saints for all those draft picks and still picked up McNabb.
Andy had a lot of positives but drafting was WAY DOWN THE LIST.
So jsally430, next time you should know your facts before posting.

It’s surprising to me that Reid, who went to one Superbowl in, what, 15 years, in Philly, and is coming off of two dismal seasons, got hired up lickety-split by K.C. with full personnel responsibility/power — but Lovie Smith, who also went to one Superbowl (in 9 years) but whose Bears won 10 games this year and are perennial contenders in the NFL North, is still languishing on the sidelines.

Maybe Reid has a better press agent.

Nice attempt but Dawkins wasn’t drafted by Reid and Douglas was a Jets pick…One of the biggest mistakes he made was letting Dawkins walk. Reid is a terrible talent evaluator. He refused to draft linebackers and WRs for many years. Remember James Trash and Todd Stinkston. He believed his system could plug in any WR to perform. Ha ha ha…His drafts have been awful…especially in the last 4 years. Reid benefited from a weak NFC east from 2000-2004. He was terribly outcoached in the Superbowl. Doesn’t anyone remember the Superbowl where the Eagles couldn’t run the hurry up offense ? Time outs and clock management…..ha ha ha.

Reid hired Jim Washburn to run the Wide 9 before hiring a D coordinator last year….what D coordinator would want to come to Philly after being told what scheme they had to run ? …..No one….that’s why he reached to make his buddy Juan Castillo a D coordinator despite zero D coaching experience above the high school level. We watched this “gotta do a better job”mess up close….KC will find out soon enough as this arrogant, smarter than everyone in the room coach attempts to revive KC.

He’ll probably come off at the opening press conference as a jovial, fun loving guy as he makes a fat joke or two but that will flip quickly.

  72. eaglesfanalways says: Jan 5, 2013 8:44 AM

So, who did Reid bring in to Philly that was great? The defense was already in place from the Rhodes era (Dawkins, Trotter, Reese, Douglas, Vincent, et al.). He brought in McNabb, which got us respectable, but the way both of them choke in big games cost us a Super Bowl and several NFL Championship games. Yeah, good luck with that, KC!

    Dawkins: drafted three years before Reid arrived, Reid let him walk two years too early, never replaced his position or his leadership;
    Trotter: Drafted by Rhodes, Reid let him walk to Redskins then had to admit his mistake and bring him back;
Hugh Douglas: Rhodes traded for him, Reid let him walk to Jaguars then had to admit his mistake and bring him back.

Hearing Chiefs fan drool over Andy Reid is like hearing Viking fans drool over Donovan McNabb last season. these are two people who peaked 5-7 years ago and lived off of past accomplishments ever since then. Chiefs get ready for 5 years of losing seasons and complete chaos, and if you’re lucky a “Michael Vick” might arrive and squeeze out a couple years of hope.

    Andy Reid GM? Yikes!
