Browns expect Chip Kelly to decide soon

Oregon coach Chip Kelly remains the first choice of the Cleveland Browns in their head-coaching search, and the team expects to know whether Kelly will take the job soon.

Be ready for something to happen today,” a source told the Cleveland Plain Dealer on Saturday.

Of the six teams with head-coaching vacancies, three of them (the Browns, Eagles, and Bills) appear to have significant interest in Kelly. If he’s getting multiple offers, there’s no reason for Kelly to rush to make his decision.

But once Kelly has met with all three teams — as he is believed to be doing today — he may know enough to make up his mind.  And the Browns seem to think that Kelly will be their man.

  1. Chip, you are threatening to ruin your reputation by joining this franchise. It is a set-up for failure for any coach. Do the right thing and go to a team that is prepared to be built in this fashion (e.g. Eagles, Bills, Panthers).

  2. Personally, I think the Browns don’t have the personnel for Chip’s system. I think it’ll be interesting to see how much power Haslem is willing to give Chip, and that’s probably what Chip’s decision will be based upon.

  3. When I heard JOHNNY FOOTBALL 10 times last night (about midway through first quarter ) I turned it off ! My little way of stickin it to the man !

  4. The Browns haven’t been relevant since the 80’s. Given that, what’s the harm with this ‘experiment’ if it does really happen?

  5. Again, what is the facination with this guy? And why not look at some of the multiple coaches available that have NFL experience and some success?

Hey Steeler fan, how are the playoffs treating you?

Check our trophy case then ask that again. We are so generous to spread the wealth.

  7. Well, if he’s deciding today, my semi-educated guess is that he won’t be coaching the Eagles.

Anyone get the sense that he’s using the Browns?

And hey Eagles fans, if he dies coach in Philly, and you thought Andy was arrogant, just wait til you get a load of this guy. He invented the game, according to himself. He’ll make Andy look like Humility personified (while competing with him for the best personification of Gluttony).

  8. where’s pittspuke on this list? The Packers have won the most titles with 13 and the Chicago Bears are 2nd with 9 titles. The Cleveland Browns are 3rd with 8 total championships

Last we checked, there was still an empty spot where that 7th “in the bag” Lombardi was supposed to go

  10. I think if Kelly takes the job, one of the stipulations is that the Browns get alternate shiny silver helmets as in the picture, along with some outlandish alternate jerseys so he can make the transition from the Pac 12 easier.

  11. Hey ctown, if that’s so true you must love the Pottsville Maroons and the Frankford Yellow Jackets cause that was who “Da 1926 bears” and packers were losing to. Lol

Just becuase they changed the NFL Championships name to the Super Bowl, after Lamar Hunt’s daughter’s Super Ball, doesn’t take away the fact that Cleveland actually has 8 Championships, and Pit has 6.

You Steelers fan want to talk history, when it’s only beneficial to you. Did you forget that Steelers were terrible for 40 years, before they actually did something? Or did you see the fact that the Steelers had the lowest paid attendance on December 30, against the Browns, since Heinz Field opened? Just over 51,000 people. What happened? Did all the bandwagoners jump off?

  13. And didn’t the Ravens take all your WWII era trophies with them when they got so tired of losing they packed up, left, and actually won a Super Bowl in Baltimore? Haha!

  14. If there are recruiting violations and stiff sanctions coming down at Oregon, yeah then the Browns are correct. Chip Kelly will make a decision soon and be out of Oregon as fast as he can.

  15. To bad nobody saw those games because it was before TV. Some were before electricity. So yeah nobody remembers them because they all died long ago from old age. Haha!

  16. No matter who is hired they need to change their look. I wouldn’t say go as wild as Oregon is, but change is good. And don’t expect playoffs the first year. Going to majorly overhaul the offense before they look like 10% of the Ducks.

  17. Kelly may be good or he may not, but those claiming to know in advance just sound foolish. Every single candidate has flaws. Every single one. Cowher? He’s been out so long and already achieved a great deal, would he still have the fire? Same exact deal with Gruden, plus the fact that he is notoriously bad with young rosters. Saban? doesnt want to leave and flamed out in miami. I could go on for every potential name, big and otherwise.

So please stop acting like Kelly, or whomever, is a ridiculous idea. There really aren’t any slam dunk hires, this year or any other.

  18. Hire NFL legend Monte Kiffin, he held Kelly to 62 PTs, 730 yards and 37 first downs. Of course Monte had superior talent. LOL

    NFL can’t handle innovation.

  19. I checked steeler nations trophy case and all I found were some pop warner participation ribbons so I don’t know what he’s talking about.

  20. I don’t understand why it was reported as a done deal with Cleveland before he even met with other teams. Why wouldn’t he want to listen to all offers before deciding? What pull does Cleveland have that he would give them the right of first refusal? Just doesn’t make sense. And you figure if it was a done deal with Cleveland that he would just cancel the rest of his interviews, like Andy Reid did.

I think agents are floating a lot of things out there and causing some reporters to jump the gun. Andy Reid’s agent had him going to Dallas a month ago, then it was a”95% done deal” with Arizona, when in fact he hadn’t even (and never did) meet with Arizona. It’s all propaganda until the deal is signed. These agents are playing us all for fools.

clevelanders are not band wagon fans.. there are ups and downs but we all bleed orange and brown.

    Ups?

  22. When Pittsburgh doesn’t make the playoffs it’s big news. If the the browns are over .500 it’s huge news. That’s why King James and the Ravens couldn’t wait to get out of town. Haha!

  23. For a Browns fan, whenever the Steelers don’t make the playoffs, it is their way of winning the Super Bowl. How sad it must be. Bringing up championships whenever there was 12 teams in existence, and I’m sure you must’ve really enjoyed those championships, ya know, considering probably about 10% of you were alive for them. I don’t even dislike Cleveland fans, I actually have pity for you all.

  24. As for most of us that are fans of other teams besides the Browns and Steelers you might be surprised how the rest of the NFL views you. We appreciate Browns fans and hope they do well (as long as they aren’t playing our team). They have been subject to bad ownership and management and are loyal. We view the Steelers like the high school jock that may have done well in the big game, but as time goes on just becomes more immature, irrelevant and annoying. The typical Pittsburgh fan uses his terrible towel to both wave at the game and cover his face when he’s arrested for committing a crime against nature. The definition of a true dillema is when the Steelers play the Cowboys.

  25. Chip Kelly has potential to be a good coach, but nobody can win with a team that has Brandon Weeden on the roster. Even if he’s only the backup, Weeden’s pathetic hangdog face and general awfulness can infect an entire franchise. Plus, he’ll be 30 next year and is already a lost cause. The Browns can make a step forward by hiring a new coach, but they’ll never compete until Weeden is forcibly removed from Cleveland.

  26. Wow. If ever there were a thread where one person was posting under multiple user names, this is it.

The funny part is that this person thinks the rest of us have no idea.

  27. I can’t believe the NFL drafted Weeden in the 1st rd. MLB would never draft a 29 yo that high no matter how good he looked in the Big XII

  28. Chipper, wont be coming to Cleveland. Because of the Browns penchant for perennially underachieving the past 15 years. I’ll say it again I predict Philly pulls out the big bucks to land Chipper.

You obviously have never been to Cleveland, or Pittsburgh for that matter. It’s ok though, we all suffer from envy from time to time.

  30. Hey Steeler fan,

    a) The bandwagon sure did hit a speed bump on the way to the “big can of ketchup” on 12/30. It seems like about 25,000 paying fans fell off in the incident. Nice effort there…way to support.

    b) Now we all know that Steeler Nation doesn’t really travel well at all. Most people have just already left Pittsburgh and go act like idiots in other peoples’ stadiums when their former city’s team shows up.

    c) Some “diehard” fans you are. Despite the challenges the Browns franchise has faced over the years we fought to keep our team when it was ripped out from under us, fought to keep our colors after the NFL allowed it to move and have continued to support our team through miserable seasons and constant regime changes since they came back in 199. You can’t even fill your stadium after being eliminated from playoff contention. Don’t ever talk to me about being “diehard fans”. That’s a joke. Loud and proud in the good times…absent in the bad. Sounds kinda like my ex wife…

    Sincerely,

    Browns Backers Everywhere

  31. It would be interesting to see “da Bronze” (Pittsburghese, sorry) return to relevance. Kelly could get Tebow and let Tebow run his health into the ground while Kelly rebuilds the team with real players. Should take about 2 seasons.

  32. Will Kelly’s “System” work in the NFL?

Chip’s main system is getting 18 year olds who are three times faster or more talented than the other team to join up so they can wear the sick Nike gear that Oregon gives away. Then you play a fast offense and just outscore everybody because they are out of shape from the week-end frat parties.

Yeah, pretty all that should work in the NFL…….
