Ponder’s status remains unclear

Ponder AP

As the Vikings get ready to face the Packers in the wild-card round, questions persist regarding the status of Minnesota’s starting quarterback.

Christian Ponder has an elbow injury.  On his throwing arm.  And he was limited in practice all week.  And he technically is listed as questionable.

Jay Glazer of FOX reports that Ponder and the coaches will go to Lambeau Field early to see what Ponder can do before making a final decision.  Glazer also reports that the players haven’t been told whether Ponder or Webb will play.  Webb, per Glazer, took the first-team reps in practice this week.

A source close to Ponder tells PFT that Ponder likely will play.  But there’s enough of a question about his status to create plenty of buzz that Joe Webb, the quarterback-turned-receiver-turned-quarterback, could get the start.

And some think the Vikings would actually have a better chance of winning with Webb.

Joe Webb can make plays too…

  2. thepvyharvin says: Jan 5, 2013 3:40 PM

If Webb has to play, may be bad news for the Pack. Could see Webb running 3 long tds against that pathetic run D

  3. vikelover says: Jan 5, 2013 3:40 PM

Frasier wants to bench Ponder. He knows Webb is better. Webb = SB MVP. Book it.

  4. veence69 says: Jan 5, 2013 3:42 PM

I’d take Joe Webb over Christian Ponder with a gimpy throwing arm any day.

  5. dondada10 says: Jan 5, 2013 3:42 PM

I think Ponder is gonna start but if he looks shaky they’ll go to Webb.

  6. ronaldjones says: Jan 5, 2013 3:43 PM

This is not a good problem to have if you are the Vikings. Choosing between Ponder and Webb is like being asked to choose between being stabbed in the face or shot in the back. Either way, you won’t be able to produce competent quarterback play.

  7. packh8er says: Jan 5, 2013 3:45 PM

I’ve generally been a bigger fan of Webb than Ponder, but right now Ponder’s play has improved a bit and he’s got the momentum. Next year would be another thing, but now is not the time for a switch.

When was this story developing? It came out of left field.

  9. pakfan1982 says: Jan 5, 2013 3:47 PM

Yes Webb can make plays to but he’s a second string quarterback, Second string quarterbacks are second string for a reason… and that reason is they aren’t the caliber quarterback that starters are especially big name starters such as Ponders and Rodgers… should still be a very close and great game… Packers are still a better all around team though, The Pack will win 40-37

  11. tigobitties says: Jan 5, 2013 3:47 PM

Webb is not a qb. We should have put him in at WR to see what he can do. Sure he can make some plays but not consistently enough.

  12. sjs779 says: Jan 5, 2013 3:47 PM

    Webb=Garbage. Otherwise he’d already be a starter

  13. gbpshareholder says: Jan 5, 2013 3:47 PM

If this game comes down to mistakes made by the QB’s, like many games do, I will take Rodgers over Ponder or Webb… GO PACK GO!!!

  14. doorharp11 says: Jan 5, 2013 3:48 PM

Ponder will play and he is the better choice even if hes hurt! Skol Vikes everson griffen is going to put the hurt on rodgers to make it very interesting…

  15. minnesotablizzard says: Jan 5, 2013 3:51 PM

The Packer fans I know are really nervous about Joe Webb, they’d much rather see Ponder outdoors at night. Joe Webb has ‘it’ and you don’t want to have to face that in prime time for your playoff life.

  16. jetsflyinghigh says: Jan 5, 2013 3:52 PM

does it really matter? put anyone who visits this site in, i’m sure they’d be able to hand the ball to peterson.

As a Packers fan, please start Ponder, please. I know you can’t pull two good games out of your hind end.

Hmm, or the one other reason you forgot-the team spent a high draft choice and big contract on them and is reluctant to think they may have dropped the ball. See Mark Sanchez, Jake Locker, and possiby Ponder. Just because tht are second string does not mean the starter is heads above the guy who starts.

  19. shieldsisland37 says: Jan 5, 2013 3:56 PM

When Ponder is playing well, ie, last week, the Vikings are hard to beat.

When Webb is playing, well, he can make some plays. But, I am not sure he can make some of those tight clutch throws that Ponder made last week.

Bottom line. The Vikes need Ponder to play, and play well.

  20. packattack1967 says: Jan 5, 2013 3:59 PM

All he needs to do is hand off–I can do that.

Looks like Frasier is getting wise, we only beat GB if Webb plays. Ponder’s game last week was a flook. I don’t care if we win another game or ever win a SB, just beat Green Bay! SKOAL!!

  24. nathan702nelson says: Jan 5, 2013 4:02 PM

Before the Packers fans bash Webb let me remind you something:

It was Webb that beat the Eagles 2 seasons ago, in freezing weather, at the opponents stadium, as a rookie in a game that everyone thought the Vikings would get thrashed in. He ran all over their defense and ended one linemans career with a literal ankle-breaking juke.
I’d rather have Ponder playing tonight, but don’t count out Webbs ability.

  25. biggappa03 says: Jan 5, 2013 4:03 PM

    #2….Refs.

@pakfan-did I miss the memo promoting ponder to “big name starter”??

  27. thepvyharvin says: Jan 5, 2013 4:06 PM

This is reliable,,,Webb is going to see playing time. Give em hell Joe! You don’t get nervous, why you can do it! Webb just has fun!!

  28. discosucs2005 says: Jan 5, 2013 4:07 PM

The one downside for the Packers is, there isn’t much film on Webb and he’s a totally different QB than Ponder.

As a 49er fan I have no idea who to root for with this game coming before Seahawks/Redskins. Technically we beat the Packers, but that was a long time ago. Although this game wouldn’t be in Wisconsin. The Vikings beat us in Minnesota, but that too seems like ages ago.

I guess I’m hoping for good long game; like 8 rounds over OT.

  29. obamareallysucks says: Jan 5, 2013 4:08 PM

  31. vikingshavefoursuperbowlappearancesandarethebest says: Jan 5, 2013 4:11 PM

Who cares who starts? Minn. will win. Rodgers 5 INT 0 TD. Simple as that.

  32. vikingsgohard says: Jan 5, 2013 4:12 PM

I think people forgot what Webb did against the Eagles an Vick a few years ago an there was Detroit

  33. trbowman says: Jan 5, 2013 4:13 PM

This should be music to the ears of Viking fans. Ponder is terrible.

  34. harrisbarton says: Jan 5, 2013 4:13 PM

Having to choose between Ponder and Webb is like having to choose your favorite Menendez brother.

  35. vicnocal says: Jan 5, 2013 4:14 PM

As a Bears fan, of course this is happening now. Where was this last week?

Packers will roll today by 17+ points.

I guess the good news is Lovie’s finally gone.

  36. packhawk04 says: Jan 5, 2013 4:15 PM

This is really smart by frazier. He knows the vikes are not winning this game straight up. He has to manufacture some kind of gimmick like this to steal a win.

  37. wludford says: Jan 5, 2013 4:16 PM

Either Ponder or Webb can deliver the type of performance the Vikings need from the QB position. Ponder would be better recognizing the Packer defenses. Webb has more athleticism.

  38. weareluckytohavemikeflorio says: Jan 5, 2013 4:16 PM

if Joe Webb was that good the Vikes wouldnt have spent a 1st round draft pick on Ponder.

  39. dlk47823 says: Jan 5, 2013 4:17 PM

For those of you who forget, go watch the tape of Webb’s last start in the NFL. It was the most horrific event in television history.

  40. billbrasky72 says: Jan 5, 2013 4:18 PM

I really, really like Joe Webb. He’s the first guy to congratulate Christian and everybody else when they come off the field. He’s a great guy and a great athlete. They really need to get him on the field. But, he just is not an accurate enough passer to be a starting QB. With their lack of receivers, especially big receivers, I don’t know why they don’t give him some reps at receiver. He is a good enough passer to throw the ball from the receiver position every once in a while too. Randy Moss threw quite a few TD’s as a Viking, and he can’t pass nearly as well as Webb. Why can’t he be both a receiver and a #2 or #3 QB?

  41. mungman69 says: Jan 5, 2013 4:18 PM

Looks like Green Bay can mail this one in.

  42. conormacleod says: Jan 5, 2013 4:21 PM

Ponder has played very well as of late. But, for one game Webb could get the job done. Guaranteed play action fake and a QB run by Webb could result in a 60 yard TD. No matter who plays, it’s still the AP show anyway.

  43. onlyopinionthatmatters says: Jan 5, 2013 4:22 PM

i never understood why nobody made a big deal about webb..he stepped in and played good. matt flynn steps in and plays 1 good game and hes the next montana, kolb plays 2 good games and gets a crazy deal, joe webb plays multiple good games and shows hes a good qb and goes right back to backup qb

  44. vikesfansteve says: Jan 5, 2013 4:24 PM

See, that’s the big difference. For the Vikes, playing GB is the “big game”. For GB, the Vikes are just a stepping stone to the real “big game”.

I’m a Vikings fan, and i do have to say… How in the world can you even say “they aren’t the caliber quarterback that starts are especially big name starters such as Ponders and Rodgers”… Ponder couldn’t carry Rodgers jock on Rodgers worst day and Ponders best day. He has a long long way to go to even be mentioned in the same sentance as Rodgers. I do like Ponder, and believe he has potential. But Rodgers is in a class all by himself.

If Ponder starts, he is going to need another game like last week. AP needs another good game as well. But the main thing is, don’t let the Pack start fast! They start fast and we get behind, and it’s over.

But with Webb, it’s a whole different story. He has pure athleticism. He might not be near as accurate as Ponder, (which sounds pathetic) but Webb has speed. Webb and AP, you could see the Vikings rush for 350 yards or more!

  47. mediasloppy says: Jan 5, 2013 6:50 PM

You guys are not doctors. It has nothing to do with pain. Well, it does, but mostly it’s the swelling of fluid and loss of flexibility that messes up the throws. If you can’t pass the ball 20 yards forget about it.
