kws001 says:

He’s lucky that Oregon’s letting him come back after making it pretty clear that he’d rather coach in the NFL. I know he’s instrumental to their success as long as he’s there, but how much of this waffling are they willing to tolerate?

------------------------

There was never talk about him leaving...He said he would interview...But most likely would turn down any offer that was giving to him...But in the end...Neither the Browns nor Eagles offered him a contract.

So therefor he returned to Oregon...Where the AD said that he would do anything in his power to get Chip Kelly back.

Most of you missed the most telling point to me: look at the organizations that would woo a college coach with no NFL experience with a gimmick offense. By the time he got the players to fit the offense, the defensive coordinators would have figured it out. Weeden running that offense? Really? There is no guarantee you can get the personnel you need through the draft. The Eagles would be more equipped t to run that offense, but tell me that offense would work in December and January, outdoors?
I think it says volumes about the organizations more than it does the coach who is approached by the teams. Anyone can listen to job offer(s) and that's all he did.
Perhaps you can see why some organizations win and others don't. There are a bunch of qualified NFL assistants, but they didn't have the pizzazz! Pizzazz is thin soup come playoff time.

Kelly has now played this game against 4 NFL teams in 4 different situations to get more money out of Oregon. Chip Jelly is afraid to compete against the best in a league were the talent separation is minor. He rather have his track stars run rough shod over inferior competition. NFL coaches would have caught up against his gimmick offense and kicked his but anyway.

Do not hate the player hate the game

This guy has a good agent who coached him up to get more College money.
Staying in the NCCA means no draft no NFLPA just have a great team that talented young men what to come to play.

Even Egal fans know there team is a train wreak on both sides of the ball and they are not going to sit around for 3 or 4 years while someone gives the team the make over it needs. The team is the only one in the East with zero super bowl wins while the rest of the east have cases full of championships

The bills owner is past old so that job has no future new owner may want a quick change.

The browns well come on its the browns need I say more. They have Pitt the Ravens and the Cinn twice a year so that means maybe maybe 8-8 for years to come.

As a Ducks fan I'm happy to hear this and don't understand why people are ripping Kelly. Maybe during his interviews he didn't like what he was hearing and/or teams weren't willing to draft and build around his type of system. Colt McCoy and Nick Foles aren't the type of QB that he uses in his offenses at Oregon. Maybe Chip knows that this is the only type of offense he wants to run and can personally be successful with and if he doesn't have the personnel to do so why bother? As at least one other post on here said, the Panthers job in a year may be intriguing if it opens in a year. As for Oregon and its recruits I feel that the success after Belotti left and the continuity that the program has with the O-Coordinator taking over if/when Kelly leaves at least gives recruits some stability in the future.

The difference between Kelly and Carroll was that Carroll was previously an NFL head coach, and had plenty of NFL experience. Couple that with the fact that he never flirted or waffled when he was at USC. He steadfastly said 'No, I'm staying here, go away.' until it was clear he had to leave due to scandal. Then he went to Seattle and got hired. It wasn't because he was the fad coach of the year. He was actively courted for years and consistently said 'no thanks.'.

With the Browns, then the Eagles interviewing Chip Kelly, it set up a situation where Kelly may have gotten more information about both the Eagles and Browns than he ever wanted to hear.

With the Browns and Joe Banner interviewing Kelly, knowing the Eagles wanted to interview Kelly also...it is very likely that Chip Kelly got an ear full from Joe Banner, concerning the Eagles and their management team...people Banner knew very well.

On the flip side, Chip Kelly's interview with the Eagles' owner Jeff Lurie, Pres Don Smolenski and GM Howie Roseman..all who worked with Joe Banner...it is very likely that Chip Kelly got an ear full from the Eagles concerning Joe Banner's history and style.

Obviously Chip Kelly got enough information to make an informed decision...nixing the idea of coaching for the Browns or Eagles...preferring to stay at Oregon.

Those judging Chip Kelly negatively need to consider what the man just went through.

I can't say what went down in CLE, but my guy tells me that with Philly, he wanted full control and that was a deal breaker.

With Reid, the more control they gave him, the deeper they sunk. I don't think Lurie is going to give anyone full control again any time soon. Surely not a guy with 0 NFL experience.

At this moment, I think the Eagles go after McCoy or Bradley. With an outside shot at Arians depending on his health issues

I don't know what the truth is, but I don't blame him for staying. Some guys are just more comfortable coaching college kids. That may be Kelly's case. If it is, he better start being honest about it.

Honestly, that system wouldn't work in the NFL. The "running-QB" is an extinct breed. Yes, QB's with the ability to run will always be around. But offenses specifically designed for your QB to run just don't work in the long run, as the Redskins will see. Plus, none of the teams courting Kelly had a QB who could run his offense.

Chip Kelly is a genius, the next great innovator in the pro game, but, being a genius, he rightly wants something neither the Browns nor Eagles were willing to offer: control over personnel decisions. This wasn't about money or fear of the pro game, it's about realizing you hold all the cards and can afford to be uncompromising and wait for the the right situation. There's a QB you might have heard of who plays for the Aggies who'll be in the draft in a few years, a rookie coach could do a lot worse.

If you are ever fortunate to have a profession that you are successful at, you will interview with other companies many times over your career and you will turn down most of them. That is pretty normal, and is considered a good career move to see what's out there. Of course most of the commentators here are not in that position so they don't have any understanding of this. Also these teams sought Kelly out. It is not "Jerking them around" if he doesn't want to take the job. Do you expect a person to take a job just because he was interviewed and bought a meal?

From an Eagles fan perspective, this is good news. Kelly has no NFL experience. It would not have been good in Philadelphia, especially, given that the media there is so high and mighty, very much with a temper of its own embellishment.

But I think there’s a longer term issue. I am suspecting a lot of people are passing on Philadelphia because of the GM situation. Roseman is just clearly NOT a “football guy”. He’s a numbers guy and he’s likely an impediment to bringing in anyone competent, certainly anyone with previous HC experience and likely anyone with NFL experience.

I’ve said it before: the Eagles need to hire a GM first, then the coach. Or, get the coach and let the coach pick the GM since they like the “strong coach” system. I suspect that if you remove Roseman from the equation, folks with some experience would immediately pop up in the radar. This feels eerily reminscent of Harry Gamble from the “guy in France” days…

I’ve also said previously that Bill Parcells would be perfect for the Eagles job. Close to home and understands the sports culture of that region. I know it’s likely not to happen, but if Mr Lurie’s people read this medium, they ought to at least contact him, and see how willing he is to do some grocery shopping.

I really think they need to focus on someone with experience as a head coach for the coaching job, not just for the overall management job. You don’t want Lovie Smith – you want someone with knowledge of both sides of the ball.

I fear that they are missing the forest for the trees, tilting at windmills, as they seem to be unfocused on the need for experience in BOTH GM and coach.
