Mike Shanahan: RG3 said he could keep going

Wild Card Playoffs - Seattle Seahawks v Washington Redskins Getty Images

As you probably imagined, Redskins coach Mike Shanahan faced a lot of questions during his postgame press conference about his decision to keep quarterback Robert Griffin III in Sunday’s 24-14 loss to the Seahawks.

Shanahan said that Griffin told him that he was “hurting but not injured” and said he could play at a high level if he remained in the game, something Shanahan said he felt the quarterback earned the right to do this season. Shanahan also said that they wouldn’t have kept Griffin in the game if he felt it wasn’t in his “best interest” to continue playing.

We have no idea about the condition of RG3′s knee, but we’re fairly confident that it isn’t in the best interest in any player determining for himself if he’s healthy enough to play. Shanahan referred to the medical staff clearing Griffin a few times, so it seems things were a bit more involved than just Griffin saying he was okay.

Griffin clearly wasn’t playing at a high level, something Shanahan seemed to admit when he said the offense wasn’t producing enough after he first aggravated the injury in the first quarter. He wasn’t running as he did before the injury and his throwing was poor after that initial knock to the knee.

There’s going to be an MRI on Griffin’s knee this week, so we’ll find out soon whether there was any further damage done on Sunday afternoon.

The redskin fans season is over. Say it with me cause it feels soooo good. The Redskins fans season is over. Oh baby!

Guess he was wrong. Now you’re one and done. Humiliating loss.

and because RGIII has a medical degree we knew he was alright to play- Mike Shanahan

After he gave up on the fumble, ……..no, he was done mentally. He quit.

Robert and the Shanahan won my respect forever for overcoming all the obstacles the National Fixed League threw at them and accomplishing big things. Unfortunately, when things are scripted, you are out of control. The refs and dirty hits were too much. Bravo National Fixed League. Scripted as you wanted. Don’t even play the game if you are gonna be biased against certain teams.

Coaches sometimes have to protect players from themselves. RG3 was ineffective long before his knee finally buckled. He was being put at further risk for no reason.

No player is going to admit they can’t go anymore, it’s up to the head coach to grow a pair and pull the guy when it’s obvious to EVERYONE who can see the game that his leg was shot. That’s part of why head coaches get paid the big bucks.
There was zero excuse for having RG3 out there once the the Hawks started teeing off on him, the Skins were up 14-0 and Cousins has proven he can be trusted to hold on to a win.
This is on Shanahan 100%, what is the point in trading all those picks for a franchise QB if you are going to try and ruin his career year one. At this point it’s a toss up as to which will come first, RG3 getting knocked out the league or the Rams using the last of the picks they got in the trade.

  12. demolition510 says: Jan 6, 2013 8:17 PM

They don’t call him Shanarat for nothing. Don’t trust this man.

  14. jp4120 says: Jan 6, 2013 8:18 PM

Shanahan is lying again…just like he lied when RG3 first got hurt against the Ravens and he kept him in for 4 plays on 1 leg.
hard to say Shanahan’s a dope after this years success but a smart coach would protect RG3 instead of risking a career.

Just stay ahead of the Giants (because that’s the favorite team of The Great Roger Goodell Himself Live And In Person) and the Cowboys (because they’re the Cowboys, the perpetually overrated plaything of Jerry Jones), and the Skins will be loved by fans all over the NFL.

Your team made a great comeback from 3-6 and played hard today if not well enough to win. The team, organization, and fans have a lot about which to be proud. We don’t all hate all of you, just logicalvoice. HTTR for the season they just finished, indeed!

Any one outside of Phil, Dal, and NY who hates the Skins hates them because of logical. I was happy when they got RGIII because he was fun to watch in college. Logical started the year trolling about how the Niners wouldn’t go to the playoffs. Hold your heads high Skins fans better days are coming.

  28. balderman1 says: Jan 6, 2013 8:24 PM

It was a good run. The decision to leave him in was obviously the wrong one but shanahan got caught up and rg3 is a competitor, we know he didn’t want to leave. Shanahan needs to learn who the coach and who the player is but he will hopefully to come. Very physical and overall solid game, defense really stepped up.

  29. steelers88 says: Jan 6, 2013 8:25 PM

Of course RG3 is going to say he is okay Mike. Since when is RG3 a medical expert.

  30. mannyicey says: Jan 6, 2013 8:26 PM

RG3 shouldn’t have played. He limped out on the field. He wasn’t making the cuts on his runs. He had a severe limp that he couldn’t even mask anymore. He was done.

The Seahawks hit RG3 every time they could have. Which is what you supposed to do when you see a hurt player. Shame on Shanahan on keeping him out there.

  37. eaglesnoles05 says: Jan 6, 2013 8:30 PM

    Dear Shannahan,

    1) You risked the health of your 22 year old franchise player.
    2) You really could have won the game with a qb out there who was 100%, especially in the case where you have relied on him before and he has produced, and both QB’s are rookies.

Period. Bad move, you need to just hope it doesn’t bite you as bad as it could.

    Signed,
    The Reasonable Man

  38. bucslose says: Jan 6, 2013 8:30 PM

Yeah, and YOU’RE the COACH! Make the proper decision you moron!!! You had more than a capable back up QB, risking RG3′s future tonight along with the franchise should cost you you’re job. You have no business being a coach in this league anymore.

  39. hereisitsobrokenhearted11 says: Jan 6, 2013 8:30 PM

Before Rg3 reinjured his knee(end of the first) seahawks could not stop that offense. Bottom Line

  40. Tim_Gilmour says: Jan 6, 2013 8:31 PM

It’s already stupid to run your QB that much, but to call more runs for him when he’s that hurt is unreal. Reckless.

  41. eaglesnoles05 says: Jan 6, 2013 8:32 PM

Ridiculous comment that Griffin quit. He is the man and fought for his team through alot of pain and sacrificed himself. Good decision or not, that can in no way be interpreted as quitting.

  46. billsfan4eva says: Jan 6, 2013 8:33 PM

Seriously Alper… after what THE MOST RESPECTED DR IN ALL OF SPORTS said that Shanahan lied about him clearing RGKNEE to go back in game when he injured it, do u seriously believe things were more involved with it today as u stated in your post? Not Judging but I tend to think this was Shanahan taking RGknees word about playing at a high level over Drs input.

  47. atrophiedambitions says: Jan 6, 2013 8:33 PM

    Predictions:

    1. Dr. James Andrews resigns as Redskins team doctor tomorrow. (not such a long shot)

    2. RGIII asks for a trade. (fairly long shot but I guy can dream…)

  48. thereisfootballwestofjersey says: Jan 6, 2013 8:33 PM

With as much as he wildly scrambles, Russell Wilson is the next rookie up in the sick bay. Dude is a torn ACL waiting to happen. Just a matter of when, not if. Aside from Wilson’s elusiveness, he’s a below average QB.

  49. Gordon says: Jan 6, 2013 8:33 PM

It was a very close game until Griffin reinjured his knee. Congrats to the Skins on a fun season and congrats to the Seahawks for moving on. Both of these teams look to be solid for quite a while with their young talent and excellent QB’s. That was a pretty darn good football game and the officiating looked pretty good to me.

  52. steviaquinn says: Jan 6, 2013 8:35 PM

  54. abninf says: Jan 6, 2013 8:37 PM

I think it’s safe to say Griffin, as good as he is, will not have a long and healthy career. Especially with Shanahan as his coach. First season and already this knee debacle. And the concussion deal.

  55. pdway says: Jan 6, 2013 8:38 PM

RG3 is a gamer, I’ll always give him credit for that. But watching him in the 2nd half – that’s where coaches are supposed to protect a player from himself, and they didn’t do it.

    From a hawks fan.

  56. thedubixcube says: Jan 6, 2013 8:39 PM

Speaking as a Packer fan, I’m absolutely disgusted by what I saw take place in this game and even more so by Shanahan’s lame excuses over the last couple of weeks. The man is clearly responsible for risking a young man’s career for the sake winning a few games. Conduct like that is the very antithesis of what should be expected of an NFL head coach.

Whether or not RG3 said he was good to go is entirely irrelevant. Players don’t decide if they can play when they’ve been injured. The coaches and medical staff do. Everyone with a functional pair of eyes could see RG3 had no business in that game from the jump.

Goodell, you’ve been attempting to portray yourself as some sort of bastion of safety in the NFL today. Well, here’s your chance. Investigate this mess and drop the hammer on Shanahan. Then, expose Dr. Andrews for being complicit and not doing the right thing.

  58. daknight93 says: Jan 6, 2013 8:41 PM

Shanahan is an idiot..it’s clearly obvious he couldn’t play at a high level hobbling the entire game, he should’ve been yanked after they went up 14-0 Dr.Andrews didn’t clear him either and of course an injured player will say, don’t take me out..but player safety is most important and as a coach it’s shanahan responsibility to take him out regardless of how he feels because he hurt the team staying in playing on 1 leg.

  59. tachyeon says: Jan 6, 2013 8:41 PM

This all the Shanahan’s fault. there was no need the have run plays for RGIII in the game. He was throwing well and off to a great start until for what ever stupid reason Shannon’s started calling run plays. This all rest squarely on there shoulders and they should fined or fired for risking the long term health of RGIII. they had a good chance of winning without run plays just stupid on the part do Redskins coaching staff.

This loss has got to be on Shanahan. It was CLEAR that RG3 was more than just hurt. When you limp for a 7 yard gain, that means there is an injury. I was shocked that they waited until it was too late to give cousins a shot. It is not like Cousins has not played this year. RG3 played like a warrior which would be different if it was Brett Favre playing his last season. This is your FRANCHISE qb and Shanahan was willing to risk his future…for what? I am not even a skins fan and I am bothered that a coach of his calibur would make the choice he did…

  62. ososrule says: Jan 6, 2013 8:42 PM

As depressing as the loss is, I can look back at the past 20 years and remind myself that for the first time in a long time, we have a lot to look forward to for a long time. RG3 will heal, will be better, will be smarter… the O line will continue to gel in their 2nd full year together, Fred Davis will be back, Garcon will get healthy…. the Defense started to find an identity during the 7 game streak, Brandon Merriweather, Orakpo and Carriker are all back on D plus we build more secondary depth through the draft as Shanny-Allen have proven an ability to do the past 2 years. Maybe they work their usual cap magic and go throw the money at Byrd.

Skins fans, no reason to hang our heads…. not a bad first year for a team with a couple rooks at the helm.

Shanahan is an idiot! Everyone watching that game could see that Griffin was not well enough to execute and play at a high level. As soon as he did his 1st playaction and rolled out at 1/2 speed on a gimpy leg it was clear he should have been removed from the game. There was no threat to the defense anymore of him running, which ended up costing the Redskins the game. ALL the blame goes on Shanahan.

Two years ago, Jay Cutler pulled himself out of the NFC championship game because of a knee injury and is lambasted by peers and the media alike. Now, with RG3 in a similar situation but deciding to stay in the game, the media is demanding to know why RG3 wasn’t pulled! Ridiculous.

By the way, I wonder if this means that we can expect tweets from MJD and Darnell Docket stating that they are glad that RG3 made the decision to stay in the game and injure himself further unlike Cutler?

    Strange double-standard here…

Also, since whn is a knee injury the end of someones career? AP blew his out last year and just had the second best year for a RB ever.

    Take heed Redskins fan.

Are you Skins haters reading the same article as me? Nowhere here does it say that Shanahan OR RG3 went against what doctor’s said today (and that includes Andrews). He was medically cleared to return, RG3 said he could continue to play, so Shanahan did what he thought was best for the team. It turns out it wasn’t the best thing for the team, but that doesn’t mean he didn’t try.

He has thrown for over 250 yards 3 times this year. Very Blaine Gabbertesque. The truth is for those who watch football, this guy is a hype machine. Add to that he is the most fragile guy in the league he will be lucky to last 5 years. Vick 2.0, Aaron Brooks 2.1, it is the same guy except he has a running back who rushes for 200 yards a game. Crazy! Keep on believing ESPN. Take the blue pill people and wake up!

I have to admit, It looks like Wilson is one of the smartest QB’s to come out of the draft in a long time. He is very smooth running the play action/ run action/ read plays… very smooth. WILSON NEXT IN THE SICK BAY, REALLY…. UM… FAIL!

Shanahan needed to pull him much sooner. Of course RGIII said he could stay in… He didn’t want to be yanked, but when he couldn’t throw the ball anymore he should have been pulled. Just like you pull a pitcher that is done even though he doesn’t want to come out. To have him in there for that last series was horrible. If Cousins had come in earlier he might have managed a few 3′s at worst and they could have won that way. Brutal that Washington couldn’t manage any points after the first quarter.

I have nothing but respect for RG3 for being a tough SOB and trying to play through the obvious serious injury. HOWEVER, Shanahan should face some form of discipline. Even though he is great, RG3 is still a rookie and the adrenaline was flowing. The coach should be the level-headed one and take a young player with a serious injury out of the game. This game could have a major impact on RG3′s career and the injury and pain also made him ineffective on the field.
Shame on Shanahan. He definitely cost the team the game by not putting in Kirk Cousins and may have cost RG3 some of his explosiveness.

  130. olsonic says: Jan 7, 2013 1:45 AM

The biggest fallacy in this whole thing is that RG3 would be the best person to consult about the condition of his knee. You don’t ask the guy who ran track and played football his entire college career how his MCL, LCL, and ACL are doing, you ask a guy that studied the anatomy of the knee for 10 years before he was even trusted to give informed advice. Shanahan hiding behind the fact that RG3 told him he was o.k. is the most cowardly act of ducking responsibility that I’ve ever seen from the supposed head of an organization.

Part of the reason professional sports teams are structured the way they are is to give special powers to the people that are the most skilled in a particular department. GMs are the best at picking players, Coaches at X’s and O’s, Wide recievers are the best at catching the ball, and DOCTORS ARE THE BEST AT GIVING MEDICAL ADVICE. The damage has already been done. Shanahan, Snyder, they are all implicated in this obvious lack of appropriate levels of consideration for the health of their players.

Remember, this is the guy who allowed Terrell Davis to go back into the super-bowl after he told him he couldn’t see.

Ok, huge lifelong Redskins fan here… I am so proud of my team for not giving up when they were 3-6. They won 7 straight games and knocked the Cowboys out of the playoffs in the process. As far as I am concerned the Skins out played my expectations of them this year. They won the NFC East for the first time since 1999 with a rookie qb, a rookie rb and a make-shift pass-rush and secondary. So, for that I am proud. As per the future I am excited about next year bigtime. We get back Orakpo, Carriker, Meriweather, Helu, Tanard Jackson and others who were hurt this year. Plus we will get a healthy RG3. Let’s be honest… The Skins would of won this game if Griffin was 100%. Seattle is lucky they caught him when he was gimpy. I’m no sore loser so I give credit to a very good Seattle team and esp Wilson, he has alot of talent no doubt and Lynch is good too. The Skins will be back next year stronger than ever… Skins fan shouldn’t be salty, they should be proud. Hail To The Redskins!

  133. screechdaddy says: Jan 7, 2013 3:17 AM

Even the Vikings knew enough not to risk their mediocre starting QB’s health, playoffs or not. Webb was not even playing at Whitehurst-like proficiency. Why Shanahan would put a potential future HoF’er at risk when it’s clear he’s too injured to even finish ONE game, let alone make it through four playoffs is pure selfishness and lunacy. You play the hand you’re dealt, and RG3′s knee injury dictated he should have prepped and started Cousins for the playoffs and hoped for the best. Major fail as a head coach, and as a human being, imo.

  134. fishyinalittledishy says: Jan 7, 2013 5:55 AM

RG III is was worth all those no. 1`s and what ever else washington gave up for the Griff so impressed with the young man on and of the field. But he will not last very long probably 5 yrs max if he continues running around like he does. Defenders will do everything to get big licks on him their lively hoods depend on it. He is so special he can do it all with his arm he has to change his style a little to survive. Fair play to the redskins for giving up all those picks but you dont want to be looking to the bench come crunch time every New year.

After the first quarter you did nothing. Second half you put up 76 yards. We put up 371. Can the excuses, I don’t want to hear your left guard went down. They even mentioned that while a big loss, the guy subbing for him did a great job.

Cousins didn’t come in until the 4th quarter when RG3 couldn’t go anymore. You wanna blame anyone or make excuses, blame your coach for not taking the decision away from a young man that has a lot of pride and wanted to finish the game regardless of the outcome.

But don’t make excuses for your team losing and acting like it would’ve been different. Once Marshawn picked up that fumble from Russell it was like the first body punch in a fight, and we just kept’em coming. We started out flat, but it isn’t how you start, it’s how you finish.

I wish all the best for RG3 and his recovery. Never want to see anyone go down like that regardless of the team.

It took the skins to play their very best, and for the giants to not particularly care! And that’s what happened! When the giants wanted it they got the win and when they didn’t they didn’t win! It’s really that easy! With that said ,I have no problem with him keeping rg3 in that game! He gave the skins the Only chance at winning that game! Sorry cousins may beat the browns or pull off 1 play against the ravens but he isn’t beating that Seahawks defense! What I didn’t understand was why they were running him in the read option? They should of continued to use Morris and play action to fool Seattle into thinking maybe he couldn’t run! That he was too hurt, then gashbthem when they least expect it! But oh well see ya skins you blew your golden given opportunity ! Because the gmen who are already loaded with far superior talent won’t be complacent next year!
