Bill Belichick: Patriots’ previous win over Texans means nothing now

In December, the Patriots destroyed the Texans, 42-14. Which is great news for the Patriots, who get to play the Texans again on Sunday in the divisional round of the playoffs.

Except for one problem: The Patriots have been down this road before: Two years ago, the Patriots destroyed the Jets in December, 45-3. And then the Patriots lost to the Jets in the divisional round of the playoffs. New England coach Bill Belichick says there’s a lesson to be learned in that.

I think there’s certainly a lesson there about the game that we play now doesn’t have much to do with the game we played before,” Belichick said, via the Boston Herald. “It’s another example of that. We’ve talked about that many, many times here, before and after the 2010 season. I don’t think it’s anything that wasn’t mentioned until that situation occurred, but it’s an example we can point out.”

Belichick said he doesn’t often see similar game plans from opposing teams when facing them a second time.

“I think when you play a team twice during the season, the games are totally different,” Belichick said. “They never go the same way. We’ll be able to certainly look at some of the matchups individually, guys that faced each [other] in the game. As far as plays and calls and things like that matching up, I’m sure they’ll have some new wrinkles. I’m sure we’ll have some, too.”

There’s no doubt that the Texans will have to do things differently than they did in their visit to New England a month ago.

  1. Except for one problem: The Patriots have been down this road before: Two years ago, the Patriots destroyed the Jets in December, 45-3. And then the Patriots lost to the Jets in the divisional round of the playoffs.

And they beat Denver in Denver last year and then destroyed them in the playoffs.

    It means nothing!

  2. Kinda eerie how this all sets up the same as the Jets from 2010 for the Texans (crappy QB, great defense, original game a total blowout on Monday night).

  3. The previous win means nothing but the way the Texans (and Schaub) have played the last month does. Pats win easy.

One thing you can count on however is that unlike fans, Belichick will not be looking past anybody. Just another reason the Patriots have been the most consistent and successful team in the league since he’s been here.

  4. The Patriots were down this road in 2011 with the Broncos, too. How’d that work out for the Broncos?

And how did 2010 work out for the Jets? They’re 0-4 against the Patriots since.

  5. Sure it means something. the Texans, I’m sure, are thinking they REALLY want to win more than they did during the season.

  6. When I was young, I got into a lot of fights. But if I took a good beating, if I got into another with the same guy, it stayed in my mind what happened before. But, it didn’t stop me from trying to get even. I’m sure the Texans feel the same way. Not going to do them any good though. It’ll be closer, but the Texans will still lose.

  7. Also that game in 2010, give credit where it’s due – Rex coached the defensive game of his life, he threw a ton of new looks and blitzes at Brady. I’ve never seen Brady as confused as he was that night, the offense was shut down for the best part of 3 quarters. Since then Brady is 4-0 and has for the most part carved up that Jets defense.

Brady studied and learned from that loss, he’s been 4-0 against the Jets since. As bad of a head coach Rex Ryan is, he’s pretty good at defense and I can’t see Kubiak/Phillips being able to do something similar.

  8. The Texans do have some good film on the Pats…the Pats, not so much, as the Texans did nothing right. This game will not be a blowout, (1)the Texans are too good and (2) the pats D gives up big plays and points.
    We will see.

  9. Well, the 2010 Jets played well the last games of the regular season and then beat Colts and Manning on the road, running game and good defense.

These Texans are playing bad 1 month ago and beat the Bengals, not a great team

    That is the difference

  10. I think Belichick is taking the right approach here — you never want your guys to take anything for granted in the NFL.

Still, the game plan is probably going to involve the same basic principles. Shut down the run, because thier whole offense is predicated on the ability to run effectively and pass off of play action.

Schaub hasn’t done well in big-time, nationally televised games this year. I think the Pats walk away with a dominating win in this one too.

  11. If the Texans play the way they did against the brain dead Bungles, the Pats will roll. Texans were one over thrown pass from losing.

  12. With any luck, the Texans will eliminate the Patriots and us football fans will get a break from the constant gushing over Tom Brady.

  13. Texans fan here. I think any objective person would have to pick the Pats to win. That said, a lot of things went wrong for the Texans in the last game, only some of which were named Tom Brady. They killed themselves with drive-sustaining penalties on defense. The absence of Garrett Graham was big, not because he is a great player (ala Gronk) but because it eliminated the Texans’ two tight end sets that they like to run.

My prediction…Texans’ D will show better in this one and keep the Texans in the game. The game will come down to Schaub, and as I said at the start, if that’s the case you have to give the Pats the edge.

  14. Rest easy Patriot and Bronco fans. No way Goodell the hypocrite will allow Balt or Houston a chance to ruin his beloved Brady-Manning matchup. The Ravens and Texans will get no calls this week. Count on it

  15. The Texans are certainly one of the best teams in the league, but they are not at peak capacity right now. Still, the Patriots are wise to respect them because they have some great athletes on that side. Except for their return game, the Patriots are pretty formidable and they should prevail; but I’m not expecting a drubbing.

  16. The Texans have to cover Gronk this time, and they have lost more guys in the middle since then (Dobbins and Sharpton).

Just a bad match-up for the Texans, since they are weak in the middle of the field on pass D, right where the Patriots are strongest.

What time is the Broncos-Pats game in two weeks?

  17. Pats haven’t won a damn thing since the league caught up to their recording opponents practice.

They have three tainted Super Bowls all won by 3
    points.

This year they will not get by Peyton.

    oh boy!

  18. Patriots ended up in a street fight with the Giants on the final game of 2007 to keep their perfect regular season. Belichick remembers what happened in the Super Bowl a few weeks later.

  19. If the Texans win, they could go all the way.

If the Texans don’t magically win this game, not really sure why they gave Schaub the big extension.

  20. I really do like the Texans and I will root for them if they beat my Pats. But as good of a DC as WP is, I don’t think he has the ability to do what RR did in 2010 to stymie the Pats.

  21. It doesn’t matter which sacrificial lamb the AFC serves up to the NFC in the Super Bowl. The AFC plays weaker opponents every week, and while they may look great during the season, they’ll get flat out destroyed in the Super Bowl. Again.

  22. I’m a Pats fan and I don’t think Schaub is good enough to beat us. Much of his success comes when their play-action creates wide open receivers. Take away that and force him to make tight throws and…well, plays like that Leon Hall pick-6 are what happens. It’s a shame too, cause that’s a pretty damn good team everywhere else.

    _____

Pats D finished 9th in points allowed. Tied with the Texans. Have only allowed more than 20 points in a game twice in the past 2 months.

  24. Pats fan here. Texans are great. They have suffocating D, great RB and a WR that will give Pats big headache. But Pats aren’t going to let Arian run more than 75 yards and the addition of Gronk, DEs Jones & Cunningham will improve Pats. Patriots wins it by a TD.

    ____________

If you consider 68-20 (best record in the league since), 4 AFC East Division titles, 2 AFC Championships, and 2 dropped passed away from winning 2 more Super Bowls all with a completely different team than they once had “not winning anything” than fine…you win. Congrats.

27 other teams have “not won anything” since spygate either.

    Raymondtx,

The Pats were tied 8th or 9th in PA (331 pts) with the Texans at the end of week 17.

  27. Belichick doesn’t really need to remind his players of this – they know it well.

In the last game there was an improbable scoring burst that is unlikely to be replicated again. If not for that it is a very different game, where the Texans don’t need to make high risk passes to catch up

Houston might not have looked good over this last month but every team in the playoffs is effectively 0-0 at this point.

  28. Well, well. Isn’t that a nice 180 from his old philosophy of going through painstaking (and illegal) efforts to tape and study a team’s past performances. It seemed to matter a lot back then, when he was willing to sell his soul for a couple tainted SB wins.

  29. All we need to know about the Texans is that they just BARELY beat the 10-6 Bengals by six points….. AT HOME!!!!

They’re going to take that act into Foxboro, against a team that spanked them 42-14 when they were ranked #1, 5 weeks ago?

    Good luck with that.

  30. Houston won but didn’t look good doing it. They must jump on New England at the start. Their D must dictate the flow of the game cause their O ain’t too good. New England wins easily.

    ______

Right. No team watches tape of the other team and studies their past performance to prepare for games.

Oh the horror! Imagine if the league allowed teams to watch tape of an other team? And if they showed all-22 players it would be even worse.

  32. raymondtx says: The Texans do have some good film on the Pats…the Pats, not so much, as the Texans did nothing right.

Uhmm, has it occurred to you that the Patriot coaches will watch film of every game the Texans have played, not just the MNF debacle? Didn’t think so…

That makes sense. My team’s invoice for a first round draft pick and $500K must be still in the mail.

  34. The Texan’s offense has to outplay the Patriot’s defense in order to win. The Texans defense has to outplay the Patriot’s offense in order to win.
The Texan’s special teams has to…. nah, they won’t outplay anybody.

True, but a forgotten fact: The Patriots (BB) have never won a Super Bowl without Eric Mangini!!

  37. Texans will lose because of Wade Phillips.
This idiot played man coverage and didn’t change it up when Brady torched him. Brady torched the cowboys when he was there in 07′ and for years as bills coach. Lastly, did u see him celebrating like a little kid after the wild card victory that should have been easier? What a loser

  38. since being caught cheating in their 3 super bowl
wins they haven’t done anything, I don’t see them scoring 42 in the playoffs.
these guys are frauds, top to bottom they are cheats, Bill cheated on his wife too.

  39. Bill is keeping it real, like always.

The Patriot won’t be overconfident. Bill will remind them all week about what happened two years ago.

  40. “Houston won but didn’t look good doing it. They must jump on New England at the start. ”

    Agreed.

The Ravens did just that in their 2009 playoff game and we saw the result. So it can be done. I still expect the Pats to win at home but it will be a good game.

  41. I am pretty sure that the Patriots actually split the two game series with the Jets that year and that the 2010 Patriots were a dysfunctional bunch. That was alaready conceded by Belichick. But considering the Patriots have had tough games with the Bills, Jets, Dolphins, Jaguars, and lost to Arizona, I would say that if they play poorly, they could lose. Of course, the Patriots are favored by 9 for a reason.

  42. What is Arian Foster doing “Tweeting” Sportswriters columns from Boston? As if whatever those clowns say is attributable to the Patriots? This is “motivation?” It’s almost as lame as the lettermen’s jackets! Shouldn’t he be preparing for the game rather than browsing the Internet reading sports “tabloid journalism” in the opponents home city? Yikes!

It’s not illegal. That would mean a law was broken. It was just a violation of the rules and those rules were not in place during the years the Super Bowls were won. The warning to Belichick came later.

  44. This game should absolutely be different from the first time around. The Texans just beat a hot Bengals team everybody was talking about lately.

No idiotic rant here such as the Pats fan earlier saying something about ‘oh when i was young i used to get in alot of fights…’

or the the Texans fan right above me..’We have no chance..’ I’m sick of you people.

The game will be competitive plain and simple. Get your popcorn ready, this weeks upcoming matchups will be a dandy.

  45. Patriots fan here.

The teams that give the Patriots the most problems pressure Brady without blitzing – which the Texans can do. I think the game will be much different then last time BUT I hope not.

To win, the Texans need turnovers by the Patriots and a strong running game and low scoring. I do not think the Texans can win in a shootout and if the Patriots get a big lead early the Texans will cave.
