Gruden chooses WWE title bouts over BCS title game

the-rock_header Getty Images

Jon Gruden once wrote a book that posed a simple question:  “Do You Love Football?!

Tonight, Gruden’s answer apparently is, “No.”

The man who cashes a paycheck from ESPN has opted not to watch the BCS national championship game between Notre Dame and Alabama.  Instead, multiple folks on Twitter (including the official WWE account) have pointed out that Gruden is attending the Monday Night Raw pro wrestling event, which is being broadcast live from Tampa by USA Network.

Based on the quality of the college football game, Gruden may have made the right choice.  Still, if he has any interest in coaching in the NFL next season, he’d possibly be more interested in watching the performance of multiple pro prospects as they perform in real time, without a script.

Then again, maybe Gruden hopes to moonlight at a pro wrestling announcer.  Hell, we can almost hear him declare that, yes, he can indeed smell what the Rock has been cooking.

Regardless, based on the quality of the game, he made the right decision.

I’d love to have him go be a commentator for the WWE. Anything to get him away from Monday Night Football. I have to watch it on mute because of him.

Good for Gruden. Do what YOU want to do and not what is expected of you. All time favorite person.

Re: The BCS title game/WWF connection…..no matter how many weeks you hype The Brooklyn Brawler, no one is ever going to enjoy watching him wrestle The Ultimate Warrior on Superstars when they wake up on Sunday morning.

The guy has probably watched a billion hours of football this season. Who cares if he wants to watch wrastlin’

    Not worth watching

Apparently Gruden doesn’t have an exclusive contract to watch college football

He’s not going to learn anything from tonight’s game.
College football killed it, by giving the teams a month and a half off while they ran 30 uninteresting worthless bowl games down our throats.
Don’t look for a fix anytime soon – a much heralded 4-team playoff was put off for a couple of years – after it was need 10 years ago.
And that 4-team playoff needs to be 8 or 12 but that is probably 10 more years down the road.
    SNOOZE

  14. stampnhawk says: Jan 7, 2013 10:52 PM

One of the few times where its more embarrassing to watch football over wrestling. Its like Rudy and the waterboy vs The Rock and Undertaker on the field tonight.
    Good for Gruden.

  15. thestrategyexpert says: Jan 7, 2013 10:54 PM

Maybe he’s planning to watch the game later and review it more indepth without the distraction of a live game going on that he is anxious to see who wins?

Also any players he needs to evaluate he should naturally look at the film of every play they were in and study that, and this game footage would already be part of that review process. To watch it now would be redundant. How many times does one need to watch the same game and review the same plays?

    Actions speak louder than words.
Given his actions, he is comfortable in the job he has. Enjoy Monday Night Raw John Gruden.

Yeah because one of the most decorated players EVER Manti Te’o, the Mackey winner Tyler Eifert and Louis Nix aren’t future first round draft picks…

And that’s just that guys that are guaranteed to be first round picks.

  19. Tadd says: Jan 7, 2013 11:03 PM

Really?! If I wanted to see a non-story made into a story I would go and watch ESPN, I expect better than this from this website.

There is no story here, he can learn just as much, if not MORE, from the game by watching it later. Besides is it really the place of the Head Coach to scout players? Don’t they have a scouting department for that?

  20. raider23mike says: Jan 7, 2013 11:09 PM

I was watching WWE too, now that Rock is back full-time until WresrleMania

  21. tannethrill says: Jan 7, 2013 11:17 PM

Or maybe he’s spending time with a loved one before he doesn’t have time.

Do you read what you write and consider it at all?

Do you really see an owner/GM saying “I really want to hire Gruden and he wants to come here but he didn’t watch the National Championship Game live so I have my reservations”.

No, that would never come into play and it sounds ridiculous.

This is literally the best and funniest thing that has ever existed in the history of this site.

Man, take a look at this specimen, Bruno Sammartino. He grew up in Italy and lives in Pennsylvania, comes from a great background, fantastic parents, and I gotta tell you, Gorilla, he’s got a lot of ability, poise, focus, energy and ability. But most of all, Monsoon, he’s got the guts and talent, man.

Probably with his family..Gruden grew up with Notre Dame football because his father was a coach or scout? Speaks volumes about the way his dad was let go that he would choose to skip the game.

coachs don’t need to watch this game live – there is such a thing as film!
Come on give the guy a break. You guys trying too hard to make a story out of nothing!

  32. oms0004 says: Jan 8, 2013 12:45 AM

Seeing as he works for the network that broadcast the game, I think he should have plenty of access to any and all footage he wants tomorrow. Unless he signs something with a NFL team before then….

  33. jthv83 says: Jan 8, 2013 12:55 AM

Apparently Jon has better things to do than watch the worst BCS game in history? Who hired Notre Dame? Fire them … FFCA … Fire the AP.

Don’t let ND into a game that matters until they join a conference and stop playing 8 home games.

    Laughable.

    Go ‘Noles

  37. bnwpnw says: Jan 8, 2013 1:30 AM

Turned on the game for 1 minute. Saw:

    -Alabama up 42-14.
-Two Alabama players getting into a near fistfight.
    -Saban screaming at a ref.
-Brett Musburger desperately – truly desperately – trying to make it all sound interesting.

Turned it off. Will that minute count in the ratings?

  38. pisano says: Jan 8, 2013 1:50 AM

Yes, that makes sense. Because we all know coaches get all their info off just ONE game. :)
