Matt Cavanaugh is out in New York

The Jets have yet to fire offensive coordinator Tony Sparano.  And they may not at all.

But they won’t be keeping quarterbacks coach Matt Cavanaugh.

Cavanaugh is out, according to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News.  The long-time NFL assistant came to New York with Rex Ryan in 2009, after his second stint at his alma mater, Pitt.

And so, even though Cavanaugh’s primary pupil, Mark Sanchez, possibly will stay, Sanchez will have at a minimum a new position coach.

Maybe just a start of the needed house cleaning?

    Aaaaand that solves everything.

Foregone conclusion, but should have been accompanied by the dismissal of Sparano. The Jets’ QBs looked uncoached all year and the offense uncoordinated.

The guy won a freaking Super Bowl with Trent Dilfer, but seriously ……..Mark Sanchez, Tim Tebow, Greg McElroy …….what did Matt Cavanaugh really have to work with?

    Problem solved! Nice job everyone!

Just some friendly advice from an AFC rival…. if I were in that organization, I’d be doing everything I can to get Norv Turner to come in and run the offense.

Cavanaugh didn’t coach the Ravens’ defense for that title. I’m willing to bet he vouched for Sanchez and his ability to get him to work. He shouldn’t have done that if he made that choice since Sanchez is not a good QB by any stretch of the imagination.

A good QB coach would have figured that out and not stapled his success to a losing player like that. He lost credibility and invested his chips in a ridiculously poor choice. Maybe he was hoping to get lucky and see how long he could keep the job for.

Couldn’t fix your brakes (cut Sanchez due to contract) so we made your horn louder (canned Cavanaugh).

Isn’t it spelled Sparano, not Cavanaugh???
    Maybe I’m wrong!
Both need need to go its just the beginning and it better include the entire offensive staff

Instead of firing Matt Cavanaugh, they should have had him compete with Sanchez for the starting job…

I’m from NY and trust me, we all laugh at this mess.

I’m sooooooooooo glad I found that Homer Jones football card as a kid in the 60’s . Saved me a lifetime of grief…

Finding scapegoats since 1969, its a long loved Jets tradition.

What?! But they had such a good thing going!

It will be a sad day when they fire Sparano (for the other teams in the AFC East)

  15. jetsflyinghigh says: Jan 7, 2013 6:29 PM

a year too late in my opinion. last year when they were changing the entire offensive staff, mainly due to poor play at the qb position, why would they keep the qb coach? i guess they wanted to keep someone mark knows around, but he clearly wasn’t doing a very good job AT HIS JOB.

  16. commonsensedude says: Jan 7, 2013 6:31 PM

Did Rex fire him from his beach resort in the Bahamas?

    A comprehensive list of quarterbacks Cavanaugh has successfully developed;

    Erm…he’s getting there…

This reminds me of when the Cubs fired their 3rd Base Coach. Probelm solved!

  19. 1oldpro says: Jan 7, 2013 6:43 PM

Seriously? The quarterback coach. Why don’t you just fire the football. It never went where it was supposed to. Why don’t you fire a lineman’s butt? Not the lineman, just his butt.
Rex Ryan is the most pitiful NFL coach I have ever seen. Even Saban walked out on his own when it got bad. This is pathetic.

Is Sparano still the O.C……what could they possibly be waiting for?

  21. crappygovernment says: Jan 7, 2013 6:54 PM

Neither RG III or Andrew Luck did as well as Tebow in their first playoff starts.

Those games stunk this weekend without Tebow.

  22. crappygovernment says: Jan 7, 2013 6:55 PM

What are the Jets gonna do about fans? They alienated them and jerked them around all season, why would they bother coming back after being screwed like that?

Sanchez is the greatest QB talent to come along in a long time. SO it must be the lousy QB coach.
    Give me a break!

  25. profootballwalk says: Jan 7, 2013 9:13 PM

He should get a raise for having to work with the QBs the team gave him.

  26. rcali says: Jan 7, 2013 9:21 PM

Sanchez gets another coach fired. Nice work Mark!

  27. backindasaddle says: Jan 7, 2013 11:12 PM

Matt Cavanaugh is a casualty of Sanchez. I think Sanchez is listening to Justin Bieber in his helmet instead of the offensive play calls.

  28. redpo2583 says: Jan 8, 2013 6:20 AM

Cavannah is a good coach, they should’ve kept him but jets disfunction is apparent. I like Rex but when your told to keep the coach by the owner, the GM is a lame duck.
