Redskins fullback Darrel Young accuses Seahawks of cheap shots

Darrel Young AP

Washington Redskins fullback Darrel Young isn’t happy with the actions of the Seattle Seahawks in the Redskins’ 24-14 season-ending loss on Sunday.

According to Jim Corbett of the USA Today, Young says the Seahawks took cheap shots against running back Alfred Morris and said cornerback Richard Sherman was taunting the Redskins sideline. Morris came to the Washington sideline yelling obscenities after defensive end Red Bryant allegedly stepped on him following a play.

“There was a cheap shot — Red Bryant tried to step on [Morris] after a play and hit him in the head,” Young said. “Alfred Morris is one of the nicest guys you’ll meet.”

“We’ll see them again. When Alfred comes to the sideline cursing, you’ve got a problem because this is a kid who doesn’t curse.’”

Washington offensive tackle Trent Williams took a shot at Sherman in the post-game aftermath on the field Sunday. Williams later apologized for the action, but he wasn’t the only one wanting to go after Sherman.

“[Sherman] was taunting Mike Shanahan on the sideline, telling Mike, ‘You can’t throw over here.’ I wanted to go over and punch him myself,” Young said.

The two teams met in Seattle a season ago and couldn’t even make it to the coin toss without a fight breaking out. The Seahawks have now knocked Washington out of the postseason the last three times they’ve made the playoffs.

None of this is going to cool the growing rivalry between the two teams but they are not scheduled to meet again in 2013 unless they meet once again in the playoffs.

Yet he doesnt mention the numerous times that pierre garcon initiated boxing matches on the field instead of blocking Browner, the fact that Trent Williams tried to throw down with a guy over 100 lbs smaller, or any of the crap that the other red skins defenders were trying to pull.

I’m sure Sherman had a lot to say and probably did taunt the redskins… but you are big boys. If you cant take the taunting the best way to do it is to play better than the guy taunting you. If all you are gonna do after losing a game is complain about the other guy taunting you maybe you should go play in college. Grown up league is for grown up boys. But keep talking, you have plenty of time to whine now.

  2. bigtunna says: Jan 8, 2013 2:28 AM

Did he also accuse the dirt monster of twisting RG3′s leg?

  3. westcoastbias12 says: Jan 8, 2013 2:32 AM

Well I know for one thing the reason Richard Sherman is saying that is to get them to throw the ball at him. It’s not malicious.

It’s called baiting. He barely got thrown at all game. He wants the ball. Just like with Brady. Challenged him all game and got a pick once he went at him.

Not that Sherm can’t get beat. But bad things tend to happen the more you throw at him.

Also knowing Red Bryant he probably just couldn’t control his large lovable mass.

Anyways hopefully the next time they play its a less chippy game. There was a little much on both sides at times.

Are they talking about football or watching a Lifetime movie? Because I can’t tell the difference. Be glad the Giants gave you the division. Back to the cellar you go with no Bob in 2013.

  8. 49erdynasty says: Jan 8, 2013 2:45 AM

Seahawks playing dirty? A Pete Carroll coached team? I’m shocked!

  9. juliusanonymous says: Jan 8, 2013 2:48 AM

Seattle doesn’t care about the Redskins. Our rivalry is with the 49ers, a quality team in our own division.

The Redskins are just a bottom-dwelling joke of a franchise that we stomp every few years in the playoffs (for the last decade).

Although it is really cute and hilarious when the lame 4skin fans crawl out of their swamp trailers and start bragging about their 3 Super Bowl wins from the 80′s. LOL. Someone needs to flush that team down the proverbial toilet – in other words, send ‘em to LA and give ‘em a new owner. Someone who won’t sell the farm for a QB and then throw him out on a substandard field to blow up his knee. So much for that home field advantage, eh?

  10. kylexitron says: Jan 8, 2013 2:49 AM

Really he should probably be more concerned about why his team lost than what the other team did while beating them fair and square.

How dare he?!? The audacity of Sherman. I wish he learn to be more of a class act, may DeAngelo Hall is offering lessons now that his season is over.

    Slow news day?

  13. ronmexicothecoachkiller says: Jan 8, 2013 3:12 AM

Emotions run high. So much is at stake.
In the Game I watched, Redskins DB Deangelo Hall was border line out of control. Hall was in someone’s face throwing elbows and/or flapping gums after the whistle on every play non stop. Redskins and RG3 played a tough game. You lost. Move on.

  14. blackcatnfl says: Jan 8, 2013 3:13 AM

I 100% agree!! The late hit by the Seahawks player that was flagged shouldn’t just be a penalty of a few yards, that should be an EJECTION. If you obviously and intentionally try to injure another player with a late hit, you shouldn’t be on the field.

  15. blackcatnfl says: Jan 8, 2013 3:15 AM

To be clear, I mean the shot on RG3 as they were moving in for their 2nd TD, not the shot on Morris. So if you try to take players out and there’s no bounty set by the coaches, that’s ok?

  16. romosmicrodongs says: Jan 8, 2013 3:20 AM

this game was fixed, cheap shots did happen all night, and they were playing witb intent to injure

  19. chawk12thman says: Jan 8, 2013 3:45 AM

The loss seems to have stuck with these guys a bit. Best advice; get over it and start preparing for next season.

The Seahawks don’t have time to worry about the Redskins and I hope they don’t respond. Atlanta Falcons’ are on the radar.

    Go Hawks!

  20. tdubdizzle says: Jan 8, 2013 3:45 AM

I saw that play and Red Bryant subtly kicked Alfred Morris right in the head. That was a cheap shot and I respect Alfred Morris for getting up immediatley and getting in Red Bryants face. Im a Hawks fan but that was such a petty thing for Red Bryant to do. Real men dont throw cheap shots.

  21. jibberator says: Jan 8, 2013 3:48 AM

  22. x1xbbx7x says: Jan 8, 2013 3:51 AM

It’s Sherman’s right to talk. He gets into his guy’s head. That’s fine. I have no problem with it. He talks and he backs it up. Period.

…but if what Young is saying is true about Bryant, the the NFL needs to look at the film. If there’s evidence to support this, he needs to be suspended for the remainder of the Seattle post-season.

  23. p1nch3dloaf says: Jan 8, 2013 3:51 AM

Consecutive losses to the same team in the playoffs is bound to leave a bitter taste.

At least Sherman won’t have to waste his time on Twitter wondering: “U Mad Bro?”

    Bring on the Failcons!

  24. Pacific NW Mark says: Jan 8, 2013 3:56 AM

  26. chikiboy says: Jan 8, 2013 4:23 AM

If Sherman bothers you with his talk…shut him up by outplaying him.

DeAngelo Hall is MUCH worse…only difference is Sherman backs it up.

Someone tell Mr. Young that no one is concerned about playing the Redskins anytime soon.

Guess playoff football may have been a wee bit to intense for some of these Skins players.

  27. whiteqbs says: Jan 8, 2013 4:44 AM

  30. hawkfan50 says: Jan 8, 2013 5:28 AM

Darrel Young says he wants to punch Sherman because he told Shanahan he can’t throw to his side ? Seriously ?! Any corner in the league worth his salt would tell the opposing team’s coach not to throw his way !

And I highly doubt Red Bryant would take a cheap shot like that – I’ve never seen him do anything dirty like that since he’s been drafted , and he’s never been accused of it before …

Sounds to me like he’s just a sore loser . And then ya got Trent Williams throwing punches rather than shaking hands after the game . Very classy .

I feel sorry for RGIII , he’s a great player stuck on a team with people who make excuses rather than look in the mirror when they lose .

Prime example of bad sportsmanship folks. Can you at least display just a lil class?

  36. geemoney713 says: Jan 8, 2013 6:01 AM

There’s a rivalry growing among the fans too. The Seahawks are the least deserving of a super bowl of the teams left in the playoffs this year. The Seahawks are nothing unless they’re playing at home. All I’ll cheer for from here out is them getting knocked out.

  37. deepbacksidedig says: Jan 8, 2013 6:01 AM

    losing 101:
After a loss, say “that was a fine team that beat us today. I look forward to the rematch”. Then just walk away.

Everything else contributes to masters degree level of losing. The time to express your true feeling for the opposition is on the field. Don’t like him? Beat him, knock him down, win the game. Then you are free to say, “it was a pleasure beating those cheap shot bums”.
    Otherwise, just walk away.

You can’t let the opponent get into your head like that, you have to become more physical in your game play. The Skins were not just physically beaten but mentally as well!!

  45. gadzod says: Jan 8, 2013 6:14 AM

I had no horse in the race, being a Bills fan (surprise, no horse by playoff time *sigh*). My father and I were beside ourselves with how much Seattle got away with things and no flags were thrown. Every time Washington was on offense, there was always a scrum or something. I distinctly remember the INT RG3 threw to Kam Chancellor. After it, I believe it was Santana Moss that had his helmet ripped off in front of the refs and nothing was called. I think the refs let Washington get away with a lot of stuff that I would otherwise see in other games be flagged for.

  46. flavordave says: Jan 8, 2013 6:21 AM

  47. rtant2013 says: Jan 8, 2013 6:25 AM

It’s not accusations when it was pretty clear. Browner was the main one, face masking and throwing Garcon to the ground play after play. Not any excuses we lost, but I wish we lost to a classier team then that. No excuses for any team to play like the Seahawks dis, and really shows how Pete Carroll coaches

  48. osoviejo says: Jan 8, 2013 6:41 AM

It was far beyond the “hype” of being in the playoffs. There was just flat out something wrong with a few of them (on both sides). They looked like rabid dogs that needed their teammates to pull them off of dead plays and even when that happened it looked like they were ready to fight even their own.
I am all for drug testing directly after every games, especially when you see stuff like that going on. I’d give each team three random tests a year directly after random games.

  75. seenoland54 says: Jan 8, 2013 8:08 AM

You guys are kidding me right? You must be Redskin fans than. There is a difference between nasty and dirty. Playoff football is when intensity is at an all time high, add that to the fact the teams don’t like each other and you get a truly unruly game. That said, both teams were giving it. I saw Garc’on and Hall doing just as much taunting and dirty tactics as Sherman. Let’s not be bias here. Are you guys football fans or ballet fans? Stop complaining about the toughness of the game, its bad enough refs throw flags every time a wr gets hit hard and every time a qb gets touched!

  85. novusanimus says: Jan 8, 2013 8:40 AM

  93. sunburntshanny says: Jan 8, 2013 9:12 AM

It’s funny how all of the sudden Seattle fans have the biggest mouths in football (following suit with Richard Sherman). I’m a Redskin’s fan and we lost and I’ll accept that, but if Russell Wilson was getting pushed to the turf after the whistle you guys would be up in arms and not saying that “it’s just playoff football” or “it’s just physical”. Bottom line is that there is a difference between physical and dirty and I’m not saying the Seahawks always play dirty, but when Cameras catch so much of it then it’s pretty difficult to deny what you’re seeing with your own eyes.

they have bigger issues to worry about then running to the media, like who their starting QB might be on opening day, if rg3 isnt ready to go, how to make morris effective w/o the options and a regular RB, not having draft picks, an aging defense including their leader who will be 38.
This is a tiring team, they got into the playoffs on the last game of the season, took a winning streak just to get there and we talk about them like seattle pulled an upset for the record books. Give me a break with this team already. Now we’re hearing about “if he curses, you know it’s bad” …ok?

Seems like none of the Skins fans paid attention to the first quarter when DeAngelo Hall was talking all his smack and pushing after every play.

I get the feeling you all know that next year is already looking quite different. No London Fletcher and no RGIII…

  101. ham1 says: Jan 8, 2013 10:00 AM

It OK. Talk trash hawks. You won. But thats it. Your not going to get a cripple QB every game. Pound your chest like you had something to do with it but that injury happened weeks ago.

Go back to Seattle where you have NEVER won a superbowl, turn on some Nirvana, shoot some dope, and realize you are the Eagles of the west….Never going to win a superbowl. It the big picture you are the losers, year after year after year after year……NO Superbowl this year either chumps.

Get the detox beds and treatment centers in Seattle ready.

  102. manhorse69 says: Jan 8, 2013 10:03 AM

To answer some apparent gaps in people’s knowledge:

-The late hit on RGIII in the 1st Q was flagged and enforced on the KO. They scored a TD on the play he was hit.

-The NFL does test randomly and has tested Sherman several times since his positive test.

-Sherman/Browner tested positive for Adderal or a similar substance…Not steroids, so they’re not “juicing” unless you consider a bunch of high school kids with bad grades to be “juicing” as well.

-Calls missed both ways and it was a chippy game that had willing participants from both sides from the first snap.

-Sherman backs up his talk pretty well. DeAngelo is still coughing after after Lynch dusted him on that TD run.

  103. bucthat says: Jan 8, 2013 10:04 AM

For who ever compared Sherman to Krusty the clown i mean cortland finnegan the difference is cortland talks big takes cheap shots but then gets beat down field and tries to talk more. Sherman at least shuts down his man while trash talking

After this field fiasco, how can Snyder not spring for a turf or hybrid field? Look at what it did for the Pats after they went to turf. So much easier to have an explosive offense on a fast track like that. Would help RG and Morris. There’s no advantage for the Skins to be playing on that garbage any more

To be politically correct in the nations capital and more accurately describe the players and their fans, I suggest we rename them the Washington ThinSkins.

There’s always something in EVERY game for EVERY player and fan to gripe about. Get over it. I’d be more worried about the decisions your own coach made that may lead to RGIII being on IR next season. That’s something to be upset about.

  108. trollhammer20 says: Jan 8, 2013 10:20 AM

Want to shut Sherman up? Try throwing a few passes his direction. The main reason he talks is he’s trying to bait teams into attempting to pick on him. It’s not like he doesn’t already have the reputation of being a loudmouth…you think that teams would be aware of this and just do their best to ignore him.

Teams avoid throwing at him so much, I think he gets bored out there. Doesn’t seem like MeAngelo Hall has that problem….and by the way, I’ve seen Sherman push the boundaries of allowable contact while the ball is in play, but I have never, not even one time, seen him give a guy a “little something extra” while a guy in on the ground after a play, like Hall was doing out there on Sunday. His play…and yes, his mouth….are all the intimidation he needs.

The Redskins were once know as a physical football team. They really do not like it when the team from Southeast Alaska comes into their building and bullies them. The Redskins got off to a fast start. Then the Hawks bigger, stronger, faster team took over and whipped their butts for three quarters. By the 4th quarter the Skins had been beat like a rug. Not only did they lose the game but they lost their franchise QB and set their program back years. As coach Yoast from “Remember the Titans” would say, “Leave no doubt. You make sure they remember, forever, the night they played the Seahawks! “

  110. gregmorris78 says: Jan 8, 2013 10:27 AM

“The Knee” is between player and coach. Obviousley Robert desperately wanted to play – period. It was the right decision & come what may – period.

No fake noise in Fed Ex – just us very loyal (& noisy) fans – period.

The game was a lot closer than some Seattle fans (& players) will admit but they found a way to win and we didn’t – period. At least the officiating wasn’t suspect.

It was a good game 14-13 in the fourth quarter and though a heathier field general may have pushed ‘Skins to Atlanta, there will be 31 unhappy teams. Props to Seattle and Wilson (Though I will be rooting against Sherman forever or at least until he is signed by The ‘Skins!)

NO, not the Seahawks! A team who have played hard to make the playoffs. Wait, hold on, you know what, I think Young does have a point. I did see quite a few questionable shots but it was coming from BOTH sides of the ball. COME ON, grow up. The Skids take their wins with pride, along with the win streak, but cannot take a loss like a MAN?!?!

It has become a circus with the whole character, oh my bad, Carriker, proclamation then the whole Griffin debacle, now a Skid complaining about cheap shots after losing a game. What next? I know, I know, someone in the team will claim it’s all a conspiracy, how they were a “one and done” by the powers that be that is the NFL. Wait, again, hold up, that theory has already been claimed by some logical speaker here.

The mistake was betting the farm on a QB with a style that made him prone to injury and then celebrating the first 12 weeks of the season while he risked his health running the ball. Now when the strategy has blow up their faces the Redskins want to lay the blame on the Seahawks for being too physical.

It’s pretty obvious that if RG3 doesn’t hurt his knee 1st quarter, thats an entirely different game. Sherman and others said it themselves.

Seattle was getting steamrolled until that injury. Remember the first quarter? 14-0 and the yardage was something like 130-0.

Saying the Skins are “soft” is ridiculous. They looked pretty physical the first quarter when they were able to run their offense at full capacity.

We lost. Good for Seattle for moving on. But their fans and players are definitely amongst the worst in the NFL. No team/fans/media talk more or are more classless. You’ve been to one Super Bowl and have never won. Your best player ever is Steve Largent. So glad you just gave us all a much needed lesson in classiness, what with childishly calling out a fanbase and team you know nothing about and generalizing the entire organization based on some commenters you don’t like online and players (probably Sherman). Nice job also trying to take one of the greatest WR’s to ever play the game and somehow use him as an insult, not sure what you were going for there.

Anyway you’ll have to excuse me, after that quality post I’ll need another moment to continue letting the infinite classiness of the redskins and their fanbase shower over me.

Seattle ran about 5 plays in the first quarter, hard to get much going when that is the case. It might have been a different game, but Griffin wasn’t stopping Seattle’s offense. Once Lynch got rolling Seattle was a tough out for the Redskins D. Don’t forget the Lynch fumble on the goal line and McCoy dropping what was a likely TD and Wilson either overthrowing or not seeing a few open receivers. Seattle could have put up at least another 10-17 points.

More confusing was that Washington underutilized Morris when Griffin was obviously ailing. Morris was gashing them at first. I guess Seattle put more guys in the box, but still.

Look, I hate when players whine like this after the game, but every one of these comments, including “My god, the skins fans on this forum are sore losers. Get over it!”, and “Man up Skin Nation. You can keep throwing darts at your Romo dart boards” came before one single Redskins fan said a word on the subject. In fact, of the 123 comments at the time of this post, I can see only one in which the poster, who may or not be a Redskins fan, agrees with Darrel Young.

Like I said, I’m not trying to defend Young or his remarks, but does the entire Redskins team and fan base deserve to be demonized for what their fullback said after an undeniably chippy game?

And what about Doughty dropping the INT in the end zone? The fumble that laid on the ground that Williams should have had but Lynch picked it up and ran 20 yards? RG3 missing Garcon on that long play where Seattle was called for a flag?
Hankerson’s drop in the 4th? The leg whip on Morris that wasn’t called? Lots of plays could have gone either way.

Seattle began to run effectively, but I’d say it was related to the Skins defense not being able to get off the field, since their offense wasn’t running at close to full speed due to the injuries to RG, Lichy, and Garcon.

  126. manhorse69 says: Jan 8, 2013 1:03 PM

Doughty was a beast, player of the game IMO for the Redskins. He didn’t drop that INT though. Baldwin played some great pass defense on the play and knocked it away from him.

And that play by Lynch was probably the turning point. Had he not picked that up and run, I’m guessing it is a vastly different game down the stretch. Lots of plays can go either way, but it sure looked like Washington didn’t have an answer for Lynch/Wilson. It’s not like the defense was gassed, the drive leading to the Lynch fumble was the opening of the second half.

Seahawks are a dirty team. They don’t win because of talent, they aren’t that great of a team and the score would have been different if the redskins qb wasn’t limping and hurt. Really theey got a few freebees to put them in the lead. The corner walked over to the redskins sideline and over too players “talking” you expect a player who’s out of the playoffs not get upset? I’m suprised all he did was shove his face. Seahawks fans are funny.

  134. Mr. Wright 212 says: Jan 8, 2013 4:31 PM

Skins players fans have to resort to whining because (for some strange reason) they thought they were going to win, and spent all last week — and the past month and a half — bragging about it. That’s why it pays to keep your mouth shut and not guarantee wins, especially when the team you’re facing is decidedly better than you in every aspect of the game.

  135. juliusanonymous says: Jan 8, 2013 4:37 PM

I am laughing so hard at these Redskin fans who say they would have won if Griffin was healthy.

When did Griffin start playing on defense? Your garbage run defense (that was supposed to shut us down) gave up over 220 yards rushing to the Seahawks. We put up over 400 yards of offense, and could easily have scored 2-3 more times than they did. The score doesn’t even show how big of a beatdown that was, and it wasn’t just because our defense was shutting you down.

Also, you can’t use the Griffin excuse when we shut down Morris after the second drive. All Griffin had to do was hand the ball to Morris. The fact that Morris couldn’t get yards was because the Seahawks defense settled down and started playing Seahawk football, and then the Redskins got shut down in every aspect of the game.

  136. juliusanonymous says: Jan 8, 2013 4:44 PM

And let’s be honest here: You Redskin fans KNOW you all wish you had drafted Russell Wilson.

Russell Wilson has a bright future. He’s young, healthy, motivated and hard-working. Never lets the game get in his head. Always keeps his team in the game. And he’ll even run out in front of his RB to block (he did multiple times, they only show the touchdown drive).

Griffin is great, but Redskin incompetence and pure stupidity has ruined the kid. You call that field a home field advantage? It just cost you your franchise QB. I swear that team is run by a bunch of monkeys throwing darts at a wall.

And the funniest thing about all the Redskin whining was how all week long, Redskin fans kept saying the Seahawks pumped in fake crowd noise. Then, we find out the Redskins were using the PA system to pump fake crowd noise. Your franchise is such a joke. A circus of cry-baby whining punks.

3 straight playoff beatdowns courtesy of the Seattle Seahawks.

  137. manhorse69 says: Jan 8, 2013 4:59 PM

A freebie like Lynch rumbling over half the secondary for a touchdown? I guess maybe the first TD could be considered a freebie since Robinson was so open he could have run all the way back to Seattle without a Redskin defender touching him.

And talking trash is now considered dirty?

  141. popper141 says: Jan 8, 2013 9:38 PM

i dont mind richard sherman doing what he does at least he backs it up with his play and daring the opponent to throw his way is perfectly fine.

as for the RG3 hit debate he tripped over himself twice due to horrendous field conditions ( that also led to clemons tearing his acl). i think we can all agree it was bad.

as for that late hit after the second touchdown it was in my opinion incidental because griffin got pushed backward by number 99 during the play and as irvin is running around to try to sack griffin he gets tackled by the redskins player and when he gets up right in front of him is griffin and he cant do anything about it.

overall the game was really chippy on both sides after the plays and i dont think the refs did a very good job of controlling the game for either team but my opinion is just both teams are physically teams and it was playoff intensity. neither team did anything horrendously wrong leading to injuries ect… but the referees should;ve done a better job of controlling the amount of physicality between the players and it just all pent up and let up to the sherman issue during the handshake.
