Report: LCL surgery for RG3

AP

Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III went to Florida on Tuesday to meet with Dr. James Andrews about his injured right knee and we’ve got our first reports of what the next steps will be for the rookie.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Griffin expected to have surgery to repair a torn LCL this week and that doctors will examine the ACL during that operation to determine the extent of the damage to that ligament. The Redskins have not said anything about Griffin’s status on Tuesday.

“We’ll have an announcement at the appropriate time,” a team spokesman told Rich Campbell of the Washington Times.

Mark Maske and Mike Jones of the Washington Post reported Monday that there were at least partial tears of both ligaments, but coach Mike Shanahan said there wasn’t a clear opinion about whether the MRI showed old or new damage to the knee. That would seem to remain unclear given the course of action that doctors are reportedly taking.

  2. good bye head coch he told griffien that the doctors said he could play but he lied to griffien the docotores relly said he can’t play

  3. Boy, that 3rd round pick on Cousins might turn out to be a blessing. I personally hated seeing Griffin go down. Very sad. But there is some silver lining, all is not lost. Cousins looks very capable until RG3 can get back to full form. We’re all rooting for a speedy recovery.

  5. Dont get why people blame shanahan. This was a playoff game. Win or go home. Rg3 said he could play and the doctors didnt say otherwise.

The problem is this could be an ongoing issue for the redskins for years to come. If im not mistaken, thats already 2 major knee injuries in just a few years. Not great news if you’re a “running” qb. Good luck to him though and hope he makes a full recovery.

  6. Guess now we’re going to hear how Kirk Cousins is the next second coming from skins fans. You can thank your coach who played t.Davis when he couldn’t even see. Hope the playoff loss was worth it. I hate the skins as a Giants fan and even I am outraged at this cus it doesn’t look good you just know the acl is torn again not good

  7. Because having one of the best defenses and running backs in the league didn’t help him Russell Wilson at all.

That’s not to say RW isn’t good but if it was Luck or RGIII wearing a Seahawks uniform then they would be even better then they are now.

  8. Shanarat should just admit, he feared for his job, so he let the kid play, even though he knew the risks. Of course the kid is going to say, I can go. Got to protect these athletes from themselves. Unless of course your face is sunbaked and you fear your midget weasel boss.

  9. Cover up! They can see any damage to his ACL with an MRI. Really a doctor can tell a lot by simple physical tests right on the bench. They know what they are dealing with but don’t want to admit they were wrong and stupid to let RG3 play. I hope he recovers well and learns from this.

  10. Where did I read that LCL surgery is worse than ACL? Is this true?

Either way, the fact that they can’t even tell how bad the ACL is seems like trouble to me.

Good Luck RG3. And good luck keeping your job Shanny!

How about because he’s the coach? Oh, you think he should listen to 22 year old rookie RGIII instead of believing what his own eyes are telling him? That’s pretty stupid, don’t you think?

  12. No sweat Bobby will be back… Once he’s back, he’ll be great for 10 years. Logicalvoice told me so

This has nothing to do with Russell Wilson’s worth. Shame on you for using this forum to bash RGIII’s injury and making this about him.

If I said I hope RW goes down in similar fashion, you’d call me a typical, rotten Skins fan. Shame on you, you troll.

Kathy, not to say that that Russell Wilson isn’t a good player, but you are silly to think that he is anywhere near the QB Andrew Luck is, and to say RGIII was overrated and overhyped from the get go is boarderline goofy.

Two thumbs down for one human being hoping for another human being to be healthy? Shame on yall.

  16. Wonderman is done… see ya back on the field Halloween if you’re lucky RG3. Thanks Kyle! For an outstanding job as OC that you took a one legged quarterback and continued to use him on designed qb sweeps, bootlegs, and the option until his wheels damn near literally fell off. Thanks Kyle for also neglecting to use your 1600yd running back after the first quarter..8 carries 1st quarter… 8 the rest of the game for a back who averaged 5 a carry and the ‘Hawks still haven’t stopped. Thanks for placing burden on the disabled and not your All Pro halfback.. brilliant

  17. Tebow made it further than RG III and Andrew Luck in his first season as a starting QB!

They need him to make the games more interesting than last weekend’s stinkers.

  18. “Dont get why people blame shanahan”…..are you joking?

It would have been one thing if RG3 looked even remotely like he wasnt in agony and barely able to move, but every drunk in the bar I was at could see the man was a mess before halftime.

Major fail by the Redskins staff!

  19. @kattykathy, I would take griffin over Wilson any day, he is a more mature QB, faster, smarter with the ball, and better arm and runs the option much better. Wilson has better defense, better O line, and better receivers. I’m not a skins fan but I will take griffin

Thanks, doc! Here I was, thinking that James Andrews is the most respected name in the history of sports medicine, but man was I wrong. I guess packermama was the on performing the surgeries on AP, Brady, Rodgers, Favre, Pujols, Michael Jordan, Emmitt Smith, and Charles Barkley.

Moreover, they saw damage to his ACL in the first scan, but the MRI can’t tell them if it’s old damage, scar tissue, or a new injury.

  22. surgery on a LCL and ACL means an 18 month recovery…and St.Louis is licking their chops for all those number one picks.

  23. RIP to rg3 career…..at least it lasted longer than……………………….akili smith? kijana carter? jamarcus russell?

  24. Yeah I agree, I’m a Hawks fan but this is no place to bash Bob III sticks, can’t blame the guy for wanting to play and the coach for keeping him in. Remember folks.. This was a one score game in the 4th quarter! Hope he heals quick, much respect from Hawk nation!

  25. Stupid is as stupid does. kattykathy does not represent the majority of Hawk fans. Get well RG.

  26. kattykathy:
Russell Wilson has had a remarkable season, and he arguably has been as good or better than RG3 & Andrew Luck. But it probably is very beneficial to him that Seattle has the 4th-ranked defense in the NFL. Indy is 26th and the Redskins are 28th, I believe. You might want to think about factoring that into your opinion.

  27. I fault Coach Shanahan for being a poor shepherd of his charges. If he had sat Griffin after the 2 TD’s, RGIII could live to fight another season.

Instead, he let Griffin gamble his whole future on one game (which was not going well but he continued to play).

Shanahan himself was gambling with house money (3 #1 picks + RGIII salary).

    They both crapped out.

Now Griffin is having his second knee surgery and the backup, Kirk Cousins, is pressed into service negating any possible plans to trade him for picks.

    ————————————————-

First it was a 4th not 3rd and second you or myself have no clue how long RGIII will be sidelined so don’t put Cousins in just yet…

  29. It’s pretty clear the Washington strategy is to delay having to announce the TRUE extent of this guys injuries for as long as they possibly can. As if putting it off will somehow make it cease to be true.

    Redskins fans deserve the truth.

  30. We all know the whole knee is shot, They already know what s wrong. There just trying to cover it up, it will come out the day of the operation. I like RG3 the guys go heart , but now his injury will side line him even longer. Dumb move on his part and even stupider move by the Coach and team Doctor. P.S.- If Cousins has to start the season it wont be pretty. One comeback game does not make a NFL QB.

  31. Michael irvin is by far the player I hated most ever but I never took joy in his career ending neck injury because i’d rather my team beat him on the field. Anyone deriving pleasure from a good young kid getting hurt has some issues and is just mad he’s not on their team. Din’t worry tho because the guy has more determination and heart than you could comprehend since youd rather have obstacles in your life disappear than overcome them.

  32. What in the bloody hell is going on? Back to back Redskins stories and not 1 comment from logical. What’s going on? Is he ok? Somebody should check on him.

  33. Shame on all of you saying Wilson is better, shame on all of you for saying he is done, shame on all of you for saying he is RGLeaf etc. Everyone of you are disgusting humans. He did nothing but give us here in redskins nation a great year that we haven’t had in many years. He will be back, he will be stronger, and we will win a SB with him. Had he been 100% we win that game and beat the Falcons. You will all eat crow! Mark my words!

  34. All you people saying don’t blame Shanahan, it was a playoff game, etc, etc. you’re idiots. Even if he comes back 110% by Week 1, dominates the league for 10 years, wins 4 Super Bowls, it was still an idiot move by Shanahan, the doctors, the other coaches and Dan Snyder. Anyone could see how bad he was struggling to even move. And Dr. James Andrews is backtracking from his earlier comments that RG3 wasn’t cleared to come back in Week 14. What B.S. You’re a physician! Tell the coach he’s a no-go!

  35. ACL and LCL is a 9 month recovery not 18 months. People love to hate. As a Skins fan, I hope to beat Dallas, Philly and NY healthy. Not insult them because of an injury but it is what it is. If I was a betting man, I would bet he comes back as strong as ever. He comes from a strong military family and has great character.

  36. @brazy44

Why was Shanahan worried about job security when he took a team that was 3-6 at the break, won 7 in a row, won the division and made the playoffs, especially considering the season they had last year (5-11). Job security definitely wasn’t a issue. Doctors didn’t say otherwise, he wanted to play and you know the risk when you play injured (that you risk further injury).

He should have taken out of the game at halftime when they were up. But it had nothing to do with job security with the season they had!

  37. brazy44 says: Jan 8, 2013 7:41 PM

He only pretends to be a fan of teams that everyone is into at the moment. Between the hate he single-handedly generated on PFT; a playoff loss; Shanahan’s horrible miscalculation; and Griffin’s injury; he has to find a hot new team to make everyone hate. Expect logicalseahawks or logicalraylewis any day now.

  39. Shanahans fault, end of story. He is a kid in a nuts stadium with a million people cheering him telling him he is the dc savior… What kid in the dame situation would take himself out. He failed every eye test to anyone with vision showing that he was compromised and endangering himself. Shanahan x2 should have thrown in the towel at the half. It’s sad.

  40. I’m guessing he’ll back and ready to go once he’s ready. This ain’t no weak minded individual here. We’re talking about a champion caliber person here. Good luck RG. Can’t wait to see you play again.

  41. MVP of the league. All this talk about his injury and the various amount of little info updates, it’s overboard. Get well soon so they can talk about your play on the field Robert.

We’re not nearly as concerned about Robert Griffin Jr., since that’s the QB’s father. The quarterback of the Redskins is Robert Griffin III, hence the nickname “RG3”.

    Got it?

  43. Face it Skins fans…he has bum knees.

Blown in college, blown now. No escaping it. Will keep happening…

You got Cousins, but no draft picks…and D.C. has RGIII fever…

Hope you enjoyed your time in the sun…

    It’s already come and gone

  44. I want to know what goes on in ‘the shed’ behind the Redskins bench???????????? Deion called it “the feel good room”

  45. It’s disturbing some fans can’t separate trash talk and real life. @ Kathy…..There is a place for you and people like you. It’s called Hell. Please go ASAP. HTTR

  46. This is not the type of post to debate who is better. Reading it you just want to pull for a young, humble super talent like RG3 to get healthy. Guys like him and Wilson are good for the NFL and having them faceoff though their careers is going to be something special to watch. RG3 class act and a warrior.

  47. ACL and LCL is a 9 month recovery not 18 months. People love to hate. As a Skins fan, I hope to beat Dallas, Philly and NY healthy. Not insult them because of an injury but it is what it is. ————————————
That’s funny, because both times the skins played the cowboys this year, the Dallas Defense was riddled with injury and all we saw your on these posts were hate and insults from redskins fans. Hey pot, meet kettle.

  48. From rotoworld :

One doctor tells the Washington Post that LCL surgery requires a longer rehab process than ACL surgery, with a recovery timetable that could last 8-12 months. The length of the rehab depends whether the ligament can be repaired or if more extensive reconstruction is required. If RGIII does have an ACL tear, however, it won’t necessarily lengthen the rehab

    ————————————-

The good news is that RG3 won’t have to worry about the coach pulling him due to injury next year and Shanahan won’t have to defend not pulling an injured Griffin next year as he most likely will not be playing.

That was really stupid of Shanahan to him in the game when he was very obviously badly hurt.

You mean besides being part of the perennial joke the last few years himself before he traded 3 first rounds for the guy who now most likely won’t play at all next year due to his mismanagement?

    Shanahan for the hall?

  50. Not a Skins fan but I did watch a lot of their games to watch RGIII. The kid is special. I want to see him back in the league, fully healthy and creating highlight reels for years to come.

But as for Shanahan. Well, I have no clue what he was thinking. RGIII gave him the best chance to win? Seriously? No one, absolutely no one, who watched that game was thinking the same thing. And if you were, then why are you then telling us you will be fine with Captain Kirk if RG isn’t back in time? Pick a story and stick to it. If Cousins is the second coming, then why wasn’t he in for RG? Oh, because RG on one leg is better? Well, then Captain Kirk needs a demotion to Private. C’mon man!

    Shanahan for the hall?
    ______
Your argument presupposes that Griffin would be hurt. While I stated that Griffin’s injury is in a large way due to Shanahan’s poor handling of the situation, there is no price too high for a franchise quarterback of Griffin’s caliber. On top of that, missing a whole season of football is a gross overestimation supported by no one in the medical field.

More importantly, with three Super Bowl rings, seven different 1,000 yard runningbacks, and two Hall of Fame quarterbacks naming him as the most important influence in their success; yes, Shanahan will be in Canton someday. Moreover, I wasn’t even making a statement about Shanahan as a coach, I was just making the point that, after going from worst to first and making the playoffs three years into his five-year rebuilding plan, the idea of him getting fired was more than ridiculous.

  52. This should be a blessing in disguise for RG3…De-Vick himself only run when clear advantage..It doesn’t work…

  53. Forgive me for my ignorance, whats the LCL? What does it stand for? If RG3 really is special he will be back and stronger than ever.

  54. Professional players play big games hurt all the time. Bryant is playing with a broken finger. Others play with casts on. Remember Curt Schilling pitching in the postseason with his foot soaked in blood? RG3 and Shanahan thought he had a sprain. They took the chance playing through it. The field probably was the worst culprit. Had RG3 won that game and not gotten more injured, this situation would have been know as an act of heroism and heart by RG3. People would be praising his dedication to the team bla bla bla. They tried and gambled and lost. Leave it alone. Hope he has a speedy recovery. He needs to call Adrian Pederson for advice (or his doctor).

And yes Russell Wilson has had a team around him, but does that take away from his talents? Aikman, Rogers and Brady had good teams around them so they must not be great. I’m not saying Wilson is great, it’s his first year and its not even over yet. But he has shown some talents the average NFL QB can’t duplicate. Maybe in several years he can earn a better title. I’m sure he has the poise and patients to wait. In the mean time he’ll will just get better and win games.

    Go Hawks!!

  55. “Russell Wilson is a much more superior QB.

I swear you Seahawk fans are starting to get on my last nerve. How about until your lousy, overrated franchise actually wins something, shut up.

I am not even a Redskins fan either.

  56. Good Luck RG III.

If you don’t make better decisions about how much contact your willing to put your body through though on the field of play, you are going to have a very short career.

Fran Tarkington would get killed in today’s NFL and he was the best scrambler of all time.
