News Flash, The Redskins play in Maryland for a reason. They have no inclination or any valid reason to move back to DC. This reminds me of the Arlington Cowboys, The Mayor of Dallas told Jerry he would not get one dime of support for his Palace. He built it anyways, didn’t he?

Most Native Americans are deeply insulted by Redskins, and other similarly insensitive sports nicknames. How would you like it if New England were the Drunken Leprechauns or Atlanta the Redneck Crackers?? I’m not PC at all, read my Username… I’m just not racist.

I am what most of you would call Native American. We call ourselves Cherokees. My dad is a 4/4 Cherokee and has been a Redskin Fan all of his life. I have no problem with the name or the logo. What I have a problem with is the continued encroachment of Indian owned lands. If you think the injustices( to include Genocide) by the American Govt toward s the indigenous population was over back in the Wild West days think again.

Isn’t it funny how the city of DC would be worried about a nickname??? Don’t they have other issues to worry about that are more important? By the way, Washington DC is the city that watched the most porn in the US. Not to mention the corrupt politicians ruining our great nation. But yet, they are worried about a football nickname that has been around for centuries. Really???

This names need to change! How fast would the team name change if it was the Crackers or Negros? If that was the case every one would be pissed and it would change so quickly. So why is this different? Just change the team name to the Natives and it would be fine…or try White Trash..or Black Skins.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that my grandmother was 100% Cherokee Indian and she was a huge Redskins fan. She had no problem with the name.

As a former season ticket holder, I can tell you that I always held my breath leaving RFK until we were out of SE DC. Whenever we saw a car that had broken down along I-295 it was always completely stripped down. One could only wonder what might have happened to its driver and/or passengers.

The franchise is just fine where they are, and FedEx Field is a quality facility. No reason even to consider moving back into DC.

It’s sad how someone wanting to change a nickname which is little used anywhere as it has a racist base and offends a large group of people is dismissed as “PC”. The Anti-PC movement is many times more powerfuil than the politically correct movement yet these anti-PC types see themselves as quaint little victims of an imaginary majority. Why wouldn’t we change a nickname that offends a race of people? There’s so many other choices.

As someone of Indian decent, I do not find the name offensive. I’m a huge Redskins fan. We love our team name, our logo emblem and our colors. We don’t need DC. It’s nothing but a rundown criminal element. The stadium is just fine where it’s at. We don’t need to go into DC and worry about getting shot, mugged, car jacked or anything else while just trying to go to a football game. If they did build a stadium, it would be in the worse area imaginable and no thank you!!

Look at our history books and you get little discussion about native americans and they’re place in history beyond thanksgiving.

Most people generally don’t know much history so they aren’t offended by it.

There also aren’t enough American Indians left to do anything about it.

Why not confuse everybody? The Wizards had a name change a while back. So their old name is available. Just change it from Redskins to Bullets.

According to testimony for a Senate committee by Sen. Nighthorse (I think he’s dead now) the term Redskin has nothing to do with skin color but it goes back to the days when there were bounties on Indians and you could get paid for killing & scalping (that’s the red skin) them.

So yeah, the term is probably a little offensive and most people don’t even know why.

ok i agree with another poster. If everyone is so intent on doing the right thing, being pollitically correct and all, lets not just change the name of a football team, that aint nearly enough, everyone that has a deed to land, how about give them up. Let’s give their land back, change the name of the Redskins and issue a public apology & pay them for our forefathers stealing from them. While you’re at it, pay another race for opressing their ancestors that worked the stolen land. Or… just leave everything where its at, and strive to not ever let it happen again, and accept that changing a name wont change what happened.

Harold pretty much nailed it. Native american reference doesn’t automatically make it offensive.

But if you think the term “Redskin” isn’t offensive, then you’re likely not one, or too hung up on tradition and sentimentality to do the right thing.
