Eagles send out commercial, sort of, for their coaching search

Howie Roseman AP

The Philadelphia Eagles have been as transparent as any team when it comes to their coaching search, sending out tweets and texts and emails and other updates regarding the status of the effort to replace Andy Reid.

Most recently, the Eagles have sent out an email regarding the upcoming interview of former Bears coach Lovie Smith and containing a link to a video message from G.M. Howie Roseman.

Actually, it’s an interview of Roseman by Dave Spadaro of the team’s official website.  But the 95-second spot comes off initially as a commercial for the Eagles organization — and finally as an effort to help keep fans from getting too antsy about the absence of a head coach.

“The key is getting the right guy,” Roseman says.

Along the way, Roseman openly suggests that any interested candidate call Andy Reid, who was let go last week after 14 years on the job.  And while Reid would likely take the high road and talk about the good things not the bad, it’s odd to think that any organization would rely on someone who was just, you know, fired to help sell the place.

Despite the organized P.R. effort that’s accompanying the coaching search, there’s still no clear sense that, as the Eagles search for the “right guy,” they know precisely where they’re going to find him.

    Are you freaking serious, Eagles?

Just hire Gruden already and be done with it.

  2. greymares says: Jan 9, 2013 2:01 PM

they have him they’re just waiting until they are legally allowed to sign him.

  3. somekat says: Jan 9, 2013 2:02 PM

lol, I actually wasn’t worried at all

    Until I seen this “interview”

  4. blockedshotnyr says: Jan 9, 2013 2:02 PM

Team hasn’t interviewed anyone since Chip went back to Oregon – time to get out of mourning… And please, for everyone’s sake, interview Mike Zimmer!

  5. anotheryx says: Jan 9, 2013 2:02 PM

Well, they hope it’s some other team that’s fired Reid so they can hire him… but whatever

“If you want to be last in the NFC Washington for the next 5 years, come be the Head Coach for the Philadelphia Eagles!”

  7. birdbrainsnj says: Jan 9, 2013 2:06 PM

The more I hear them talk and the longer this goes on, the more confidently I can say that roseman has so freaking clue what he’s doing and is scaring off good coaches.

  8. iggles07 says: Jan 9, 2013 2:07 PM

I still don’t understand how they don’t at least interview with Cowher or Gruden. Both have won a Superbowl. Not to say they should hire either, but those are two guys definitely worth meeting with.

Considering what seems to be their top targets are now off the market – Kelly and O’Brien, you would think it would be prudent to speak with some proven as well as unproven talent.

John Gruden is in Philly now, with his agent…. Been spotted by several people in Manayunk.

Time for Lurie to sell the team!
    He’s a stinking mess!!!

  12. bricktop02 says: Jan 9, 2013 2:19 PM

This is a joke. They couldn’t fire Reid the right way. Now they can’t hire a coach the right way. To hell with a new coach I want a new owner & GM.

There is also no evidence that they do not know precisely what they are doing. Even if they have settled on any of the coaches they interviewed from Atlanta or Denver, they cannot sign them until their teams are done. We have no idea if they are keeping to a well thought out plan to meet every possible candidate that they put any value on or are scrambling because they could not get Kelly or O’Brien but Lurie has a decent record when it comes to hiring an HC. Solid due diligence seems like a really sensible approach right now.

Jeff and Howie looking for a leader. What possibly can go wrong with that ?

  15. sjoyner59 says: Jan 9, 2013 2:25 PM

try hiding Howie instead of putting him in the forefront, nobody will ever want to come here !

  16. jp4120 says: Jan 9, 2013 2:29 PM

heres the problem and why they don’t have a coach yet – Lurie is too dumb or naive to understand top coaching talent doesn’t want little Howie to be making personnel decisions.

  17. jp4120 says: Jan 9, 2013 2:32 PM

these guys now have confirmed they are the biggest bozos in the league. they will get a second tier guy that will be happy to get his foot in the door and take their $3 mill per year.
Eagles are doomed as long as Jeff ‘solar panels’ Lurie is the owner.

You forgot Swept the pathetic Eagles

hopefully they are just waiting for the Seachickens to be done so they can hire Gus Bradley!

in the meantime, they need to rid themselves of Howie.

  20. skoodsports says: Jan 9, 2013 2:39 PM

I think they’ll figure it out. Eagles fans are naturally pessimistic. Everyone was flabbergasted when they hired Andy Reid, and look how that turned out.

Stay positive, have faith, and everything will work out.

  21. whatnojets says: Jan 9, 2013 2:41 PM

Wow! The New York Jets are facing a real challenge about being “King of The Clowns” title!

  22. thingamajig says: Jan 9, 2013 2:49 PM

If the Eagles are still looking for head coaching options they can always copy the Bears list.

Seems odd that you that you insult a team, than hope to hire one of their coaches in the same sentence. Definetly don’t want Gus to leave, and especially not to that cesspool.

  24. bobappraisals says: Jan 9, 2013 2:55 PM

You idiots, they are waiting for their coach to be done with the playoffs. It’s pretty obvious why they are waiting. Everybody panicks.

  25. jucam1 says: Jan 9, 2013 3:07 PM

I like how the posters who wish they had 1% of the talent that it took Jeff Lurie to get where he is or for that matter Rosen, would call them “idiots and clowns”… When those to guys get up in the morning they are successful business men who run a highly valued NFL franchise and are wealthy….. Can you geniuses say that?… Give it a rest, and wait to see who they choose at least before you go on your sad life rants about guys that are successful at theirs… Go Birds!

  26. bleedgreen11 says: Jan 9, 2013 3:10 PM

yall are dumb. they cant announce it because Gus Bradley is still playing.

  27. fbwangus8736 says: Jan 9, 2013 3:19 PM

Just call Andy Reid? That is about as dumb as gets!!

  28. fbwangus8736 says: Jan 9, 2013 3:20 PM

  29. derekjetersmansion says: Jan 9, 2013 3:32 PM

    This tells me:

the interviews so far had reservations about the Philly media.

they thought they’d have done more interviews by now.

what makes everyone think gus is automatic since theyre looking for an O guy?

Gruden burned a lot of bridges in Tampa. Cowher needs good coordinators which cost money.

  30. realfootballfan says: Jan 9, 2013 3:56 PM

The Eagles are clearly in good hands. Onward and upward.

  31. dolphins4 says: Jan 9, 2013 6:28 PM

This team will never win a Super Bowl as long as Lurie is the owner.

  32. tfoz5150 says: Jan 9, 2013 9:29 PM

And the dolphins will never have another winning season…Ever!

  33. pjxii says: Jan 9, 2013 10:58 PM

That picture of Howie looks like Michael Scott from “The Office” right down to the facial expression.

  34. joeknowsnada says: Jan 10, 2013 10:19 AM

Howie is still in the “Wax on, Wax off” stages of his training. Once he masters the crane technique, he will be unstoppable! Mister MiLurie just doesn’t have time for Howie, or coaching searches, these days. He’s out cruisin’ for his next missus.

  35. theuglitruth says: Jan 10, 2013 12:14 PM

I smell desperation in Philly. What happened to that “short list of candidates”? Seems to be getting longer by the minute.
