The LCL would normally heal without surgery- if you are going in anyway, you can tack it down so that rehab doesn't slow the healing process.

The ACL can't be repaired if it is "partially torn"- think of trying to stitch together the head ends of two mops with all the individual strands, and do it under aircraft cable tension, plus the fact that there is no real blood supply inside the joint capsule to help it heal.

There is nothing about the surgery by itself that makes his recovery any worse, depending on the repair technique used. The trick is that he has had the surgery before, so if they did an autograft the first time using either the hamstring or the central third of the patellar ligament to replace the ACL, that tissue is no longer available this time around. Thus, I am guessing that they might use a cadaver donor for the ligament allograft- and that shortens the rehab time. The trick is getting the proprioception back for a guy who has running moves.

Talking smack doesn't mean people deserve bad things to happen to them, especially a good person like RG3. I might add that if you are specifically talking about Redskins fans who read this site, then you are talking about one particular obnoxious fan, not the entire group. I frankly question whether he is a Skins fan or a Cowboys fan trying to create the exact negative feelings you have towards our fan base. If so, it's clearly working. Lastly, there's no need to ever reference the whole "God is with the Redskins" comment ever again. Any reasonable person knows RG3 wasn't serious when he said that.

Actually from what I've read RGIII doesn't have a torn ACL since his was replaced back in 2009 when it was torn and replaced with a tendon. So its possible that the tendon partially tore. An ACL on the other hand is fully intact or shredded due to the great tension it always has whether the knee is at rest or in motion.

The question is would the surgeon stitch it back up or fully replace it?

The other question is there meniscus damage to the knee cartilege and was his meniscus damaged in 2009? This will impact his return too because he can't play any sports without a functioning meniscus.

All in all a tragedy for RGIII. This should never have happened and all the signs were there that he was heading for a major knee injury long before it gave out. Given he already suffered an ACL tear in 2009 he and his parents should have known after his first knee injury a month or so ago that caution was the wise course.

6 to 8 months is optimistic.

Disregard Adrian Peterson's miraculous comeback, and it will take 9 months, minimum, to get to 90%. The last 10%, including psychological, takes up to 18 months.

In addition, RG3 has already (a) had a previously torn RIGHT ACL, and (b) had the RIGHT patellar tendon was previously harvested. His articular (cartilage) surfaces isn't going to look (or feel) very good by the time he's 35.

We'll be reading about RG3 and microfracture, PRP, and/or Orthokine in the near future.

Hate to see anyone get hurt but this couldnt have happened to a better fan base. Back to the cellar Washington, especially without a first round pick for next 3 years. Karmas a bitch huh?
-------------------------------------------

So the first comment out of the box comes from somebody who knows nothing. 3 years? Wow, who knew? I think you'd better check your "facts"
So without TWO first round draft picks TOTAL in the next TWO years...that's it, throw in the towel...I mean, ONE 2013 player acquired in the first round was everything the Skins needed...ONE rookie. Wow! It looks like all of those other teams who have a first round pick in 2013 will be Super Bowl contenders....of all of the stupid things said about this trade, that is the one which cracks me up the most.

He blew his knee out in the Ravens game. I believe that both ligaments were torn and the doctor told them he couldn't do any more damage to the knee than what was there. Knowing this, both RG3 and Shanahan made the the decision to put a brace on it and make the push to win.

He didn't injure it further on Sunday, it just got to the point that the brace wasn't helping anymore.

I coincidentally had an appointment with an orthopedist who consults with Andrews and the Redskins medical staff yesterday, and talked to him about the issue, a couple hours later, being a reliable authority on the subject, he went on the radio yesterday to discuss the issue and explained the situation exactly the same way.

Though it is an extensive surgery, given the money that Snyder will spend on laser treatments, all-star physical therapy teams, and the best recovery options available, the Third’s recovery should be on the shorter side of six-to-eight months. Providing that Griffin follows doctors’ instructions and spends the next six months resting, rehabbing, and not trying to push himself too hard, his recovery time should be ready to go next season.

Let’s hope one of those doctors’ instructions is “get out of bounds as soon as possible.”
________
A number of folks seem not to believe me. Look it up for yourself: Dr. Matthew Levine, the interview was on WTOP around 3 PM yesterday, and repeated on WFAN later in the evening.

I wish him a speedy & full recovery. But, this shows why you should not put so many draft picks in one basket. Any single player is 1 play from being done or at least missing a lot of games. Spread those picks out among several quality prospects to lessen the risk. I know some will say they want their team to go all in to land a great player, but I prefer landing 3 1st rounders with a chance to be quality players.

bolts0621 says: Jan 9, 2013 10:56 AM

Bouncing back quicker generally works on a knee that suffered its first trauma – here you’re having to reconstruct a kne with trauma (an ACL tear) dating back 4 years that already had to be fixed….

It’s 8-12 months.
____________
Incorrect on just about every angle. LCL recovery, while longer than ACL recovery, is not an 8-12 month process. Medicine advances by leaps and bounds every year and Snyder will pull out all the stops in terms of getting Griffin the best treatments, the best physical therapy team, and the best continuing treatments (they can shoot lasers into your knee now to speed up the recovery process, I kid you not).

Though people keep discussing AP in conjunction with Griffin, but a more relevant comparison may be Thomas Davis. The continually underestimated Panthers linebacker suffered three ACL tears and was seriously considering retirement before undergoing surgery by Andrews. Younger players heal faster, but even at a more advanced age Davis made a full recovery and is still going strong.

Also let's not forget, Andrews operated on Michael Jordan's partially torn PCL in the early 90's. I know it was a long time ago, but I think that guy did OK for himself.

Fickle NFL. In 2011 the entire NFL culture was outraged and called Jay Cutler a … coward, I believe it was, for not adopting the warrior attitude in a playoff game. Now, those same name callers, including this site, are all indignant that RGIII did.
--------------------------------------------------

The difference is Cutler Quit. Plain and Simple. HE didnt want to get back out there in the fire. Thats a Coward. Griffin wouldnt quit. He wanted to be out there. Even when Shanny took him out he stood on the sideline. Cutler didnt. The problem is and i think most people on here feel the same way. A head Coach is suppose to protect their players. Make the hard choices. Griffin should not have been out there after half time. Period. Any player will tell you that their ok and can continue to play. But its on your coach to make a common sense decision to take him out.

I love how everyone talks out of their ass on this site. The lcl recovery is much shorter than acl recovery. The reason is the lcl has much better blood flow to it hence it heals much faster. Also when it comes to recovery for the acl, the surgery is the same it always was and he will have an excellent doctor. The advancement has come in the rehab over the last 12-24 months. This is why AP came back so quickly. So yeah he could be back in 8 months if everything goes as planned!
