Chris Rainey arrested for slapping girlfriend over cell phone

Steelers running back Chris Rainey was arrested this morning in Gainesville, Fla., on charges of slapping his girlfriend in the face during an argument over a cell phone.

According to Matt Watts of the Miami Herald, Rainey was charged with one misdemenaor count of simple battery (dating violence). Rainey remains in custody awaiting his first court appearance.

According to a Gainesville Police spokesman, a 911 call was placed by witnesses who reported an argument between Gainey and his girlfriend, after she took his cell phone and got into his roommate’s car trying to get away from him.

According to the police report, witnesses said Rainey went to the passenger door of the car and pulled the woman out of the car, slapping her in the face. They both fell to the ground, then he chased her to try to get the phone back, grabbing her purse and causing both to fall again.

Neither the woman nor Rainey had any reported injuries.

Sadly, the dawn of the offseason (for 24 teams) means more police blotter stories like this one are coming, as players are outside the controlled environments of their teams.

  1. Rainey had a history of domestic disputes while he was at UF so I’m really not surprised.

Like every other Gator in a business suit, he will be calling a Nole lawyer to represent him.

  2. This is the same kid who once texted his girlfriend “now you die”.

Guess Gainesville PD stops protecting kids once they leave UF.

Another fine product of Urban Meyers UF program.

  3. Ok, hitting a woman is wrong but based on this story she stole his cell phone and he was attempting to retrieve his property. Was she arrested for theft? If he stole her phone and she slapped him would she have been arrested? Again, hitting a woman is wrong but so is the apparent double standard.

  4. If the Steelers had any fortitude they would drop him from their roster. Those kind of people don’t belong in the NFL. Let him go work at Wal-Mart.

  5. Ehhh hes all done on our team. He has speed but hes to small. Not exactlly an X factor on our team

  6. If he really has the ability to punch people through cell phones, I recommend we turn him over to the CIA for national security projects.

  7. Go figure, some steeler fans are actually defending this clown. Maybe he was still upset from missing the playoffs after going 8-8.

  8. So, let me get this straight. His girlfriend stole his phone and jumped into someone else’s car. He slapped her while trying to get his phone back.

The male is arrested for slapping the female, but the female is not arrested for theft? How does that make sense? Theft is a more serious crime and deserves a more serious charge.

Men should not hit women, and likewise women should not commit property crimes against men. In this instance, I think the male was defending his property and shouldn’t be prosecuted. If he had seriously assaulted her, that would be a different story.

  9. A thief stole his phone and he had to chase the thief down and by force take the phone back. Whats the problem. Come try to steal my phone and hope all you get is a slap!

  10. As a woman, I take domestic violence extremely seriously. But … this is ticky-tacky stuff. She took his cell phone and ran off, he tried to get it back and slapped her, she wouldn’t give it back and they wound up rolling around on the ground. Frankly, I don’t care what happens to Rainey as it relates to the Steelers. But it irritates me that this kind of junior-high nonsense has gone into the system and is going to cost the taxpayers money.

  11. @ravenator, compared to Ray Lewis getting away with murder, Rainey is a choir boy. Can’t wait to see Manning slap a beat down again on the Ravens in Denver this time and send them back to Baltimore losers again.

  12. There are legal precedents where slapping was considered “reasonable” use of force while retrieving a “stolen” item from the thief. Rainey’s lawyer may be able to make an effective defense that this slap was a reasonable use of force. The question may turn on whether or not the phone is considered “stolen” or whether the girlfriend is considered a “thief”.

  13. Chris Rainey is a 180-pound running back who makes Willie Parker seem like Jerome Bettis. Rainey is expendable.
Thus, he has no business drawing attention to himself.
    Dumb move.

  14. I fully support the NFL wearing pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month even though it is IMO a calculated and cynical attempt to ingratiate women viewers. It’s still a very good thing.

How about a month of wearing …

Purple to raise awareness of Violence Against Women and Domestic Violence.

Red to raise awareness of M.A.D.D. and Drunk Driving.

    NFL heal thyself!

  15. @citizenstrange …

Now that you bring it up …

As a three-time breast cancer survivor, I can’t get past the calculated and cynical attempt to ingratiate women viewers. And a lot of survivors take issue with the national pink campaign for a variety of reasons.

I’d be much happier if the NFL put its marketing energies toward something more applicable–for instance, cancer as a whole rather than specifically breast cancer. I’ve lost several male friends to other types of cancer while I’ve been battling my disease. Other appropriate causes would be traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, or arthritis. These are all medical issues that particularly impact football players, as well as millions of fans. And yes, domestic violence and substance abuse would be other applicable issues affecting players and fans.

As you said, the league needs to heal itself.

  16. canehouse,

Chris seemed like a hard working talented young man, but he seemed to speak without thinking.

As a freshman, in an interview with Alligator he dropped this gem,

“Every time you see a fine girl (in Gainesville), you see another fine girl better than her. (Some people) like different color girls and stuff like that. I’m a white girl man.”

He had a couple of other stupid comments and Meyer muzzled him. It was written off as a kid speaking before he thought.

All was fine until in 2010 he texted his girlfriend, “time to die b!tch”. He was arrested on a felony stalking charge, dismissed from the team, etc. The charges were reduced and he accepted a deferred prosecution (which may still be in play). Meyer brought him back on the team.

At the time, I supported a second chance with anger counseling. He just said something stupid, but never laid a hand on the girl.

Clearly the pattern escalated. Fortunately no one was hurt, but he needs to be hammered for this and then get help before he does hurt someone.

  17. Apparently his mentor failed miserably. Milton Bradley needs to teach Rainey how to deal better with woman. You know, if the bitch goes through his phone attack her with a bat and strangle her ass. Rainey really is lazy compared to Milton. Hell, they could be cell mates now to continue the training.

  18. Who was the Steeler player that took a dump in his girlfriend’s closet? I’m not sure any other Steelers could top that one.
