Richard Sherman thinks Atlanta receivers are best tandem in league

Richard Sherman AP

Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman thinks the Atlanta Falcons receiving corps provides the biggest challenge his team has faced all season.

The Falcons’ duo of Julio Jones and Roddy White, along with tight end Tony Gonzalez, are among the most dynamic group of pass catchers the Seahawks have had to face this season.

“I would think so,” Sherman said Wednesday. “They’re two of the best in the league. They’re two of the best out there right now as individuals. For a tandem they’re probably the top tandem out there.”

Seattle has faced some of the best receivers in the game this season in Larry Fitzgerald, Calvin Johnson and Brandon Marshall, but they haven’t seen a group that poses as big a threat as Atlanta will this week.

“I think it is really going to be an exciting match-up to watch. Their receivers are so good, and they target the heck out of those guys, them and Tony Gonzalez, so there is going to be a lot of chances in this game,” head coach Pete Carroll said.

Sherman praised the ability of Jones and White in their route-running and their ability to make an impact downfield. He said while both are dynamic players, they are effective in different ways.

“I think Roddy is more crafty of a route-runner,” Sherman said. “He uses different tricks and things. You can see that he’s a veteran when he’s route-running. Julio runs hard routes and plays the game more physical. I think he’s stronger in his routes and uses his body more.”

“This is probably the best pair [of receivers] and pair [of cornerbacks] that you could match-up, and because of the size, and because of their physical nature in the way that they play, it’s going to be really exciting to see, ” Carroll said.

The match-up of White and Jones against Sherman and Brandon Browner will be one of the most intriguing positional battles of the weekend. Which tandem is more effective on Sunday could go a long way in determining who earns the spot in the NFC Championship game. As always, Sherman is eager for the challenge.

“It’s going to be a fun match-up for us. It’s fun to play against good players. Good against good is always the best kind of game,” Sherman said.

I honestly like Sherman. The Brady thing was awesome, and his reaction to getting hit in the face wasn’t tonight back…he just waved good bye. It’s gonna be fun watching the best corner back tandem vs the best receiving tandem go toe to toe this Sunday!

  5. Mr. Wright 212 says: Jan 10, 2013 2:28 AM

Roddy White pushes off more than anyone this side of Michael Irvin. That’s how he gets open 80% of the time. As far as Gonzalez goes, Wagner will have his hands full when that’s his assignment. Their biggest challenge will be covering Harry Douglas and Rodgers when they’re in the slot and flats, respectively. Browner will go tit for tat with Jones; the one guy Jones can’t outphysical, as Browner is even bigger than he is.

  6. steelersfansblow says: Jan 10, 2013 2:31 AM

This should be an exciting game. While Atlanta is favored to win, the Seahawks are coming to play! I don’t have a preference as to who wins but I expect the winner to advance to the Super Bowl!

  7. caseyrose23 says: Jan 10, 2013 2:33 AM

Should be great. These COUS (Corners of Unusual Size) Match up well with White and Jones. Optimus Prime should stay on Julio all day for the speed he has, and BB should be manned up on Roddy. The real battle will be who guards 88 and in the trenches. Seattles O and D lines are nastier and bigger than ATL. Stoked for the game! In the words of our short on stature, but not on talent, leader “Go Hawks!”

  8. bnasu13 says: Jan 10, 2013 2:35 AM

Richard Sherman complementing other players and not being a ridiculously annoying trash talker? What is this world coming to?!

  9. whatchutalkinabouthillis says: Jan 10, 2013 2:59 AM

I like Richard Sherman because he always talks himself up but also recognizes talent on the opposition and makes a point to say something complimentary.

  10. phreakin says: Jan 10, 2013 3:05 AM

God I’m so tired of this guys mouth. I know he’s complimenting them but shut up. This guy runs his mouth more than Deion Sanders ever did and he has a quarter of the talent. And there’s that whole PED thing too. Ya I know, he wasn’t guilty because he won the appeal…wink wink.

  11. footballfan1976 says: Jan 10, 2013 4:11 AM

Best shut down corner in the game right there!

  12. frodekippe says: Jan 10, 2013 4:12 AM

Sherman sure loves to open his mouth but he’s been playing at a tremendous level this season and therefore has every right to hold himself in such high regard. This game has the makings of a classic with the devastating Falcons receivers going up against the awesome Hawks secondary. It’s easily the game that I’m most looking forward to watching this weekend, the Seahawks are the fun team to watch right now!

  13. hawkfan50 says: Jan 10, 2013 4:31 AM

This will be a great game ; two outstanding teams and probably the best receivers vs. best corners in the league . Regardless of which team you’re a fan of , this should be some great football …

Gonzalez is the key ; he can’t run rampant over the middle , and that will fall on a linebacker to cover him . Lynch needs a huge game and that will solve a lot of concerns .

Russell Wilson is 2 games away from destiny .

    GO HAWKS !!

  14. mungman69 says: Jan 10, 2013 4:41 AM

Can’t wait for this game. Will Atlanta finally snap out of their playoff funk? I think that they will.

Best “tandem” because Titus Young Sr is still his biggest nemesis

  16. patriottony says: Jan 10, 2013 5:32 AM

Only Part of his delusion is real. When he faced the Patriots he did not have to face Hernandez and Gronkowski at the same time. But he might yet get a taste of that duo in a few weeks…but I think Not,,most likely GB vs Pats or Broncos

  17. gator2006 says: Jan 10, 2013 5:36 AM

  21. rasalghoul says: Jan 10, 2013 6:42 AM

If Matt Ryan has a good game it’s over for the Seahawks. I just don’t see the Seahawks winning a shoot out, especially in ATL. That being said, I hope they win so they have to play in Lambeau if the Packers win. Golden Tate still thinks he caught the pass… FAIL

  27. tukai9248 says: Jan 10, 2013 7:47 AM

Sherman is a stud CB. Gotta like that he can give credit and respect to his opponent also.

  28. kevin1013 says: Jan 10, 2013 7:48 AM

Sherman is making it hard to like the Seahawks. Wish Trent Williams would have broke his jaw.

  29. bigblackanvil says: Jan 10, 2013 8:24 AM

I just saw the video of the post game Redskins/Seahawks game and it’s just as I suspected. Williams was wrong for punching Sherman. Sherman talks a lot of trash but it’s nothing personal. When I heard him talking with RG3 I could tell his words of encouragement were sincere. to all NFL fans please take notes. These guys are in a fraternity and yes it gets heated sometimes, but at no time do classy players really want to see a fellow players go down to injury. If you can please check the video. sorry I don’t have the link. Good luck Seattle. HTTR !!!!

If he thinks they are good wait till they try to play against Jennings, Nelson, Jones, Cobb and Finley next week.

  39. themagicman1223 says: Jan 10, 2013 9:05 AM

When we’re talking about a tandem, they sure are the best in the league. And it just so happens they’re facing the best cornerback tandem in the league as well. I loved watching the Falcons air it out during the season, this is going to be a very entertaining game.

  40. themagicman1223 says: Jan 10, 2013 9:06 AM

Tom Brady told him to come see him after the game which he did. Sherman haters like you are pathetic. Tom Brady is a great quarterback but he’s not an angel like you make him out to be.

  41. n0hopeleft says: Jan 10, 2013 9:23 AM

    Best in the league huh?

How did the best tandem in the league do so far in their playoff careers?

Combined for ZERO points in the post season last year.

They’ll be the best when they prove it in January. Not in November.

  42. n0hopeleft says: Jan 10, 2013 9:25 AM

The Packers are better, and I’m far from a Packer fan.

  43. deathonwings410 says: Jan 10, 2013 9:30 AM

Matt Ryan will choke this game away.

  44. uwsptke says: Jan 10, 2013 9:38 AM

Maybe the best tandem, but nobody goes four deep like Green Bay. You just don’t know who’s day it’s going to be (Cobb, Jennings, Jones, and Nelson). Would love to see them match up again with Seattles’ secondary again.

  45. ketchupaholic says: Jan 10, 2013 9:43 AM

Packers WR are only good because of Rodgers, year after year, going back to Favre, their QBs made average WRs very good. Just look what happened when ex packer WRs left the system for a new team, they disappeared aka, Robert Ferguson, Antonio Freeman, Bill Schroeder, Javon Walker. Jordy Nelson is a perfect example Here’s a guy who can only run one route, and usually pushes off. Then cries for pass interference every time he misses it or is shut down. Rodgers makes that bunch who they are. Rodey White & Julio Jones are far better than what the packerz have.

  46. monkeyhateclean says: Jan 10, 2013 10:04 AM

…still intends to climb on their backs while they are running routes.

  47. singhgill says: Jan 10, 2013 10:08 AM

This guy is an amazing player. Really funny too on the Real Rob report. Watch it if you get a chance. I think the Seattle corners can contain the Falcons WRs and Seattle’s offense will get the job done against the Falcons D which isn’t that great. Abraham and Robinson back practicing but who knows how healthy they will be. Clemons being out hurts but I think Irvin will get to Matt Ryan. Ryan has had some really bad games this season. I think Wilson will outplay him this weekend and Seattle will move on. Go Hawks.

  48. rukkus1 says: Jan 10, 2013 10:29 AM

There is alot of angry and jealous people that hit these threads up. Highly opinionated and negative. So what the guy eggs people on a little bit during a game. They are all grown men and professionals, they should be able to take it. They are all well paid and should be happy and content with however it goes. Let it go already…

  49. osoviejo says: Jan 10, 2013 10:31 AM

Anyone criticizing Sherman for commenting is ignorant. He didn’t just dial up his own press conference.

He was invited –by the media– to the standard mid-week teleconference so he could be interviewed.

If you don’t want to hear from Sherman, I suggest you stop reading articles and watching video about him. As long as Sherman stories get hits, he’ll keep getting invited to interviews.

    It’s not complicated.

    ===================

You’re going to have to come up with better examples than that. Ferguson was never really good to begin with, but was especially never the same after he was hit going over the middle in a game against Jacksonville. Schroeder & Freeman were old by the time they left. Javon Walker shredded his knee during his last season in GB, and was toast (despite this, Al Davis gave him the exact same contract that New England gave to Randy Moss that offseason). Maybe next year if Driver plays one more season with another team and stinks, you’ll tell us the same thing. And talking about Nelson pushing off while defending Roddy White is pretty hilarious.

Are White and Jones better than any two of the Packers WR’s? Sure, you can make that argument. But are you going to tell me that a defense going against a four-wide look is more afraid of Atlanta than Green Bay? No way.

  51. starderup says: Jan 10, 2013 10:47 AM

The Falcons have so many offensive weapons, it is nearly impossible to get them all on the field at the same time. It is not just 11, 88 and 84. Harry Douglas takes advantage of the spotlight on White, Jones and Tony to get in at least a couple catches a game. With Jaquizz and The Burner now getting swing/screen passes, the Falcons have one of the most potent, all around offenses in the league.
Should be a good game. I’m predicting ATL 33 SEA 27.

  52. osoviejo says: Jan 10, 2013 10:53 AM

  53. bcgreen21 says: Jan 10, 2013 11:15 AM

Jones/White had 200+ yards combined against Browner/Sherman when they played in Seattle last season. It will be interesting to watch the on-field trash talking as well as what the ref’s allow each side to get away with.

People seem to be forgetting last year as a rookie Julio Jones, the 4th option in a Mularky run-first/play action offense and with the lock out wiping out most of his pre-season preparation lit up these same corners for the Seahawks.
He’s a year better now and fully integrated into a much more aggressive pass-first offense that uses him as a primary target; it will be a great game but IMHO Jones will have a big day as he has the size and strength to be as physical as the Seattle CBs but the straight line speed to simply leave them if they miss or slip a jam.

Sorry Shermy Boy, you got it all wrong

The BEST kind of game is a game where there aren’t any proven Cheaters on the field like You and your boy Browner.
You know, the kind of game where all of the players on the field have not been caught for using PEDS?
I guess you wouldn’t know that kind of game as you wouldn’t qualify for it this year.
Therefore, Seattle can’t play is ineligible to even PLAY in the “Best kind of game” until next year.
