Two situations in the league involving GM hires who don't get to pick the head coach. Atleast in year one.

The Jets future GM with Rex Ryan and Panthers new GM Dave Gettleman has been told by his owner to retain Ron Rivera.

Those are two teams that will probably be looking for new head coaches next year.

Interesting to me that former superbowl winners like Jon Gruden, Bill Cowher, Mike Holmgren and Brian Billick don't even get one single interview. I could include Tony Dungy or Bill Parcells but they are done coaching. Dallas, New York and Carolina should come calling for those first 4 names in 2014 when they have HC openings next year.

Good point.

In fact there's no evidence there's even anyone seriously interested in the job under those conditions.

They'd just better hope that the best GM candidates - if there ever are any - don't want the power to pick their coaches

Browns fan here. I am happy with the Browns' present list, and I can see an upside to each and every one of those candidates.

Ray Horton - I love a great defense, so what isn't to like about a defensive minded HC, (but where would that leave Jauron)? Never mind what Seattle did that one game -- AZ has had some tough D, I can buy in.

Ken Whisenhunt - got passed over by the Steelers for Tomlin. It will make beating the Steelers extra personal. He was hamstrung by the QB situation in the end in AZ, but that'll screw up any team and its coach. His Cardinals almost won it all -- again against the Steelers (more grudge).

Bruce Arians - look at the good stuff he did with Roethlisberger and Luck, and our QBs could use similar guidance. I was underwhelmed by him when he was last in Cleveland, though, but c'mon that was back in '03, though five games without a TD on offense was damn bleak. He too could have a grudge factor as to the Stllrs.

Marc Trestman - I remember when Ohio State hired a championship winning Division II coach from Youngstown State, and all the Bucks fans thought he'd never be able to compete in the Big Ten. But Jim Tressel won it all, and until the tattoo coverup, turned in some of the best OSU football we'd seen in years. I have no problem bringing in someone who succeeded in the CFL to try and repeat it in the NFL. I like it. Also, he's already worked with Brandon Weeden (we can debate separately whether that's a plus).

Mike Zimmer - addition by subtraction from an opponent. Someone is going to hire this guy to be a head coach, if Mike Brown don't promote him outright sometime, so why not the Browns?

Rob Chudzinski - CHUD! The last time the Browns had a winning record, who was our OC? CHUD! I'd welcome him back. I don't blame him for what happened his last year here. I think he's the least likely of this group, though.

@philtration, I am not saying he is the best choice overall. He would need strong coordinators--especially offensive. The belief that an offensive minded head coach is needed to fix a lagging offense is a myth. Belichik, Schwartz and Fox are defensive guys and their offenses are 3 of the top 4 offenses this year (Belichik's has been for years). The players you mentioned are the leaders of the team and are not the ones in need of motivation. None of them are offense guys. His status as a HOFer for the Bears (and leader of arguably the greatest defense ever) likely holds weight with anyone wearing a Bears uniform. He has the ability to motivate the team but I admit he would need a strong OC...just like Lovie Smith. He made some mistakes and I believe he has learned from them. I think he might need a stint as DC somewhere first but HC (with a strong OC) is not implausible for the Bears.

I believe that it will come down to Mike McCoy or Bruce Arians with the Bears.

Singletary is just a feel good move by the McCaskeys and no one here wants him as the coach except the meathead bunch.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I disagree somewhat. Mike Singletary is a beloved figure in Chicago. He has a strong personality and can be a very effective leader. When a player needs a kick in the butt there are few coaches better than Singletary to do it…and there are quite a few Bears that need a strong kick.
=================================
Singletary is a defensive guy and they need to get that offense out of the dark ages once and for all.
He was an embarrassment in Frisco and he may have blown his chances of ever getting another HC position.
On top of that the Bears defense is loaded with veteran players and they are not going to go for this screaming, in your face act.
They are not young and impressionable.
Do you think guys like Peppers, Briggs, Tillman and Urlacher are going to be motivated, impressed or intimidated by Mike Singletary?
I don't.
I believe that it will come down to Mike McCoy or Bruce Arians with the Bears.
Singletary is just a feel good move by the McCaskeys and no one here wants him as the coach except the meathead bunch.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I disagree somewhat. Mike Singletary is a beloved figure in Chicago. He has a strong personality and can be a very effective leader. If he is the HC and he has strong coordinators with schematic/play-calling autonomy it could work for the Bears. Of course, he would need to tone down the "crazy" a bit. He has the right attitude and he is the main reason Vernon Davis turned his career around. When a player needs a kick in the butt there are few coaches better than Singletary to do it...and there are quite a few Bears that need a strong kick.

Judging by Lurie's comments about the qualifications he wants as he selects his new head coach (HC experience, offensive background), I would say that Bruce Arians fits that criteria. But he has gone down the road before against his criteria in hiring Andy Reid, a special teams coach from Green Bay with no HC experience. Don't be surprised if the Eagles go with Gus Bradley or Keith Armstrong, two guys that do not fit his initial HC criteria.

ProFootballTalk forgot to mention me as a possible GM for the New York Jets. I mean at this point they're just going for anyone. My first move would be cut Sanchez or trade him. I would be a fan favorite right out of the gate

Yes, that's right....just because a team is being thorough in searching for a new GM, a fairly important decison, i suppose it is easy to deduce that they are being rejected be previous candidates. Have you any evidence that the job was even offered and rejected by the previous candidates? Nope, you do not. Having sources like that probaly makes you qualified to write for the NYDaily News.
