APWhen the Jaguars fired Jack Del Rio as their head coach during the 2011 season, defensive coordinator Mel Tucker stepped in as the team’s interim coach.
Fast forward a year and the Jaguars are in search of a head coach again with Tucker set for a shot at the permanent job. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Tucker will interview for the job next week.
He joins Rams offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer as a reported candidate for the job and there’s been plenty of speculation that new Jaguars General Manager David Caldwell will also reach out to 49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman. Caldwell and Roman were roommates at John Carroll University, which is also the alma mater of new Charger General Manager Tom Telesco. Telesco and Caldwell also went to high school together, should you want to keep turning back the clock.
Tucker started in the defensive coordinator job in 2009 after several years on the Browns’ staff as a position coach. He went 2-3 as the interim coach last season and removed himself from consideration at Wisconsin when his alma mater’s job came open last December.

I like Mel Tucker, but we’ve been down this road before. Time for a fresh start. Thanks, but no thanks.
I see what they did there.
Smells like the Rooney rule and nothing more. No offense, but no chance he gets hired as HC.
He honestly should’ve gotten the job this past year.. idk why they went after a bunch of Mularkey.. either way the players like him & they respect him fully.. whether this is a Rooney rule or not, I wish coach Tucker the very best wherever that may be!
Wasn’t he the country music singer that has a stutter? I remember him from Smokey and the Bandit.
Greg roman is the offensive coordinator not the defensive coordinator for the 49ers
Dont do it mel!!!!
This sounds more like fulfilling that quota of interviewing minorities. He can’t possibly be legitimately considered. He’s part of the same group they wanted to get a fresh start from.
Tucker is a solid guy, but I think the Jags defense was worst in the league last season. Pretty tough to get a promotion based on that.
