Norv Turner to join Browns staff as offensive coordinator

After the Cleveland Browns named Carolina offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski as their new head coach Wednesday night, the Browns have already begun adding to their new coaching staff.

According to Peter Schrager of FOX Sports, the Browns are expected to hire former San Diego Chargers head coach Norv Turner as their new offensive coordinator. The Chargers fired Turner on Dec. 31.

Chudzinski served as assistant head coach and tight ends coach for the Chargers under Turner from 2009-2010. It will be Turner’s fifth stop as an offensive coordinator. Turner was the offensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys from 1991-1993, the Chargers in 2001, the Miami Dolphins from 2002-2003 and the San Francisco 49ers in 2006.

Norv Turner ? Who cares? I need some more updates on RGIII`s knee injury and Tim Tebow`s status.

  2. kingpel says: Jan 11, 2013 6:22 AM

    This will definitely help.

  3. niles6590 says: Jan 11, 2013 6:25 AM

Lots of negative comments about Chudzinski…probably the same amount as the hiring of Harbaugh in SF a few years ago (just sayin’) but this Browns fan is really looking forward to seeing what this brings. All I want is come December, when they show the playoff graphic on TV, the Browns to be under “in the hunt”…that’s really all I want. Is that too much to ask????

  4. donmcg2012 says: Jan 11, 2013 6:28 AM

Who is hiring him, the new head coach or the front office? Why do I get the feeling Chud is nothing but a two year puppet?

  5. dumbpollack says: Jan 11, 2013 6:54 AM

BFD!!!!! These moves get us no closer to winning than we were before. I guess Jimmy was the one who hired Derrick Dooley at Tenneesse too. Get out of town before the fans burn the stadium down, RED NECK!!!!!

  6. mungman69 says: Jan 11, 2013 6:56 AM

Well, Norv is a better OC than a HC. Good luck Cleveland.

  7. ridingwithnohandlebars says: Jan 11, 2013 7:01 AM

That is a big move. Not the best head coach but is a hell of an offensive coordinator.

  8. rickyprosnit says: Jan 11, 2013 7:01 AM

Won’t the best head coach, but def can coach offense

  9. fanofevilempire says: Jan 11, 2013 7:03 AM

Cleveland, is that the best he can do right now.
I hope it was for one year.

    oh boy!

  10. dcee101 says: Jan 11, 2013 7:04 AM

If only they had a legitimate QB to run their offense.

  11. douc66 says: Jan 11, 2013 7:04 AM

This is the hire that the Jets should had made. Which shows why the Jets will continue to be dysfunctional….

  12. mdev1987 says: Jan 11, 2013 7:07 AM

What’d mularky do in jax? He ran a mediocre offense in Tenn. turner is overrated.marty was a better coach. Chud’s offense was average in Carolina this yr too. Mediocre all around. Browns will finish below .500 in that division for next 2 yrs

  13. freddieorlando says: Jan 11, 2013 7:09 AM

I can’t believe I’m saying this but this is a very smart move on part of the Browns. Norv is one those guys who is an inadequate Head Coach, but he’s always been a great OC.

  14. coonsqualler says: Jan 11, 2013 7:12 AM

And the news just keeps getting better….

  15. papacrick says: Jan 11, 2013 7:13 AM

Fitting. Hope they’re not expecting improvement to that lethal offense

  16. coolowlbro says: Jan 11, 2013 7:14 AM

Well now I’m not so bummed about Chud.

  17. 49erstim says: Jan 11, 2013 7:19 AM

Great hire! I think we all agree that Norv Turner can coach offense…it is the added responsibilities of defense and special teams that crosses him up. Good luck Norv.

  18. emmac13 says: Jan 11, 2013 7:21 AM

I was not really happy with the HC hire. I thought their were better guys out there. But making Norv OC makes me feel much better. Norv is a great OC and can help Chud with his experience. Now keep Dick Juron or get a better DC. I do not want Rob Ryan.

  19. eatitfanboy says: Jan 11, 2013 7:25 AM

Now THIS is a hire Browns fans can get excited about. Norv Turner is an excellent OC.

And since he has proven to be such a terrible HC, it’s not like they have to worry about him bolting as soon as he has a little success.

  20. navyeoddavee9 says: Jan 11, 2013 7:26 AM

Good hire, but going from San Diego sun to Cleveland cold, kinda sucks.

  21. emmac13 says: Jan 11, 2013 7:27 AM

Bring in Mike Singletary as DC. Maybe Brian Cox comes back too. I love ex players as coaches on defensive side.

  22. cowboys282 says: Jan 11, 2013 7:38 AM

So much for Norv being a relevant Offensive Coordinator again. That just went out the window.

  23. paulsmith107 says: Jan 11, 2013 7:44 AM

Solid hire on the offensive side. Norv is like wade Phillips, not the greatest head coach but not many better at coordinator. I was hoping he would come back to Dallas and call the offensive plays but now I can secretly root for the brownies

  24. mdac1012 says: Jan 11, 2013 7:53 AM

Don’t know if the HC will turn out to be a good hire, but Norv as the OC is a great hire!

  25. pdmjr says: Jan 11, 2013 7:53 AM

Browns are out of their minds.

  26. stigman2012 says: Jan 11, 2013 7:54 AM

Let the Factory of Sadness now begin to work overtime.

  27. howiefeltersnatch says: Jan 11, 2013 8:01 AM

I’m more than willing to get Norved in Cleveland if it means no more passing on 3rd and 1 when you have a back getting 5 or 6 yards a pop

  28. vottorific says: Jan 11, 2013 8:11 AM

Cleveland really has something going now. With Norv running the offense and Dick running the defense who needs a head coach? Look out AFC north. A bengals fan.

  29. hurrayforyogapants says: Jan 11, 2013 8:24 AM

Ah, the student becomes the teacher…

  30. seatownballers says: Jan 11, 2013 8:25 AM

This is the best move the browns have made in years

  31. underrated49ers says: Jan 11, 2013 8:27 AM

This is actually a really good hire by the browns. Whoa.

  32. skoodsports says: Jan 11, 2013 8:32 AM

    This is a good hire.

  33. borophyll says: Jan 11, 2013 8:34 AM

That’s a good start, but the bigger decision is who is going to be the DC. Here’s to hoping the Browns stick with Dick Jauron who has done an amazing job of getting the most out of the talent he was given.

  34. johnqlunchbox says: Jan 11, 2013 8:37 AM

While there may be little media/fanboy sex appeal here, as a Browns fan I think these are solid hires. Chud is a solid offensive coach and (unlike Pat Shurmur) didn’t get the job because he’s someone else’s nephew.

Chud’s been around the NFL a long time, and I’m not worried about the absence of prior head coach experience (think John Harbaugh and Andy Reid, both of whom also had no prior head coaching experience). As many have pointed out, success as a cllege (or CFL) head coach does not necessarily directly translate into the NFL.

Hiring a new head coach is always a crapshoot.

  35. theghostofberniekosar says: Jan 11, 2013 8:39 AM

Don’t like the Chud hire, but this makes it a little better. Now if they can retain Jauron as DC and not be allergic to free agency, I can be OK with it.

  36. guitarkevin says: Jan 11, 2013 8:44 AM

It will be interesting to see Norv in the AFCN.

  37. 480volt says: Jan 11, 2013 8:45 AM

Norv Turner is a waste of space…..He needs to retire and give it up….Aikman and the boys ain’t walking through that door anymore….Browns are doomed…..

  38. dalucks says: Jan 11, 2013 9:02 AM

Wait on the Houston OC job Norv. If will be available on Monday.

  39. wludford says: Jan 11, 2013 9:10 AM

Kansas City is doing a good job of quickly rebuilding its coaching staff. I think a lot of teams were interested in Turner for OC.

  40. bullybirds says: Jan 11, 2013 9:12 AM

This is a good hire for the Browns. Now it’s time to actually have a 4 way competition in the AFC north.

    Ravens Nation

  41. daknight93 says: Jan 11, 2013 9:24 AM

ok brownies, now this is a step in the right direction on the offensive side of the ball…I’m sure doggpound fans are finally breathing a sigh of relief..especially over all the years of bad decisions. Brownies made a good decision this time around…congrats to the Browns and their fans!

  42. coltzfan166 says: Jan 11, 2013 9:30 AM

I think the Browns’ offseasons are always more interesting than their regular seasons.

  43. bobonmycob says: Jan 11, 2013 10:15 AM

Norv turner was a great oc. The keyword is was. If I had a guy that flopped as hc and flopped in every other way as my oc I’d be concerned.

  44. ninerfan94954 says: Jan 11, 2013 10:33 AM

This guy is a brilliant play caller, he took Alex Smith off the scrap heap and made him a viable to good NFL quarterback before Smith regressed after Norv left. Good HC choice also…things looking bright for all you old Fair Hooker fans!

  45. maddog111 says: Jan 11, 2013 10:41 AM

Shook my head at the hiring of Chud as head coach. But the hiring of Turner is great news for Weeden. Norv likes the big, strong armed quarterbacks and I think this hire helps Weeden out a great deal.

Steeler fan, so it pains me to say it, but good hire Browns.

  46. larrydavid7000 says: Jan 11, 2013 10:44 AM

Congratulations to Norv Turner for being hiered as Cleveland Head Coach. Maybe they have turn the corner.

  47. skinsfan4lfe says: Jan 11, 2013 10:44 AM

Just buttin in. Listen, building a good playoff caliber team needs explosiveness of the sudden kind. And that’s what Norv can do for Cleveland. And add in his passion for the run as well, be patient Cleveland, the DAWG POUND shall BITE AGAIN!

  48. brassknuckles47 says: Jan 11, 2013 10:56 AM

I absolutely dont know how Norv got his ‘genius’ reputation. As a Charger fan it was always…..1st down-RB off tackle, 2nd down-swing pass to RB or over middle to Gates, 3rd down – Rivers gets sacked, 4th down—-(Norv’s best call)-punt.

  49. vottorific says: Jan 11, 2013 11:09 AM

The new head coach WILL be looking over his shoulder. Both coordinaters have plenty of head coach experiance.

  50. jonsey2028 says: Jan 11, 2013 11:19 AM

Now the Browns have two guys that have failed every ware they went. Just to let Browns fans know Chud was going to be wacked after the coaching searches were done.

  51. mrgroovesd says: Jan 11, 2013 11:26 AM

Good for Norv. As a Bolt fan, I liked him when he was an OC there than he was a HC. Let’s see if he can turn Weeden around to become better and run better schemes there than he ran in SD his last 2 years here.

  52. footballishere says: Jan 11, 2013 11:49 AM

I don’t get the fascination with turner he hasn’t done anything since he had aikman but as a bengal fan keep doing what you doing Cleveland.

  53. icanspeel says: Jan 11, 2013 12:24 PM

Headline in 1-2 years might be Norv Turner taking over as HC of Browns.. Sorry Browns fans.

  54. thefiesty1 says: Jan 11, 2013 12:51 PM

They’re heading in the right direction with Norv as OC. Maybe, now, McCoy can get his starting job back.

  55. t3dstrik3r says: Jan 11, 2013 1:15 PM

Norv’s system needs a strong RB to function properly. When Norv has a good RB in his offense, he is really good. That’s why the whole thing fell apart in SD, Ryan Matthews blows. Norv should do well with Richardson. Chud did good things in SD too. Brownies might be a sleeper next year. Their defense was solid already.

  56. natelan69 says: Jan 11, 2013 3:22 PM

I was pretty certain Norv would land the OC job in Baltimore.

This Chargers fan (who was happy to see you go) is also happy to see you get back on the horse and land another OC job.

Good luck to Norv and the Browns.

  57. siaaa says: Jan 11, 2013 6:24 PM

Norv is good man and thats why people like him will always find a job. glad to see him as an OC rateher than a HC. this is what he was born to do.
he’ll make the browns a better team and the young qb a better player. cant say the same about that AJ (the J stands for jerk) Smith dude. dont see anyone hiring that bastard.

This is gigantic! I wanted the Vikings to fire Muagrave and hire Turner! One of the top offensive minds in the biz! The browns instantly have become relevant! Look out!
