Crazy how Kaep is so fast, it doesn’t look like it with those long legs. He also has a great arm and can be the pocket QB if need be.

All playoff games matter. Lose and you go home. Montana lost 7 times in 23 chances when it mattered. Brady has lost 6 times in 22 chances when it mattered.

Put it this way, would it have been better if the Niners had lost yesterday, since (you say) it didn’t matter, as opposed to winning yesterday, winning this Sunday , and then losing when (you say) it matters, on Feb 3?

Of course not. Finishing second best beats finishing tied for 5th/6th/7th/8th best any day.

We could certainly use that kind of logic on many other QBs. So let’s be objective and do so. For example:

Manning is Manning, a great QB, downvote all you want, but without his league worst defense stepping up and carrying Manning and his 70 passer rating in the 2006 playoffs, a clutch kicker, a don’t-even-breathe-on-my-receivers rule made just for him, he wouldn’t have his ring.

The tuck rule has been on the books since 1999. I’d be impressed if it were made for Brady since that was one year before he was drafted.

Foresight I tell ya.

How did Belichick do as a coach in Cleveland without Brady? How about in New England with Bledsoe?

Montana played in pre-salary cap NFL. It’s tough to compare the two. Both are great. Brady really has taken two entirely different teams to Super Bowls. The only player on the current team to own a ring is Vince.

I was about to write the same thing. The Packers, Steelers of the 70′s and 49′ers were all pre-salary cap era. Those teams would never be able to stay together in todays game. That is why what the Patriots have done is so amazing, Superbowl or not. And they got even better AFTER spygate.

The points for Brady are his regular season/post season career stats, getting to 5 big games, and doing it with less pro bowlers. The points against him are that he’s played worse in the big games than Joe, and even those his defense was worse in the regular season, no one blames them for either of the SB losses (and rightfully so). Brady had a great SB drive for a FG, Montana had one for a TD.

Again, I don’t like the comparison because I think players should only be compared in their eras (Brady/Mannning for example).

If I had to pick between Joe and Brady, it’s an easy choice to go with the guy who never lost when it mattered.

Personally I think SB are a team stat and Dan Marino played better in his era than anyone else played in their era.

Hard to really compare but Montana is known for his game winning Touchdown drives compared to Brady’s game winning Field Goal drives.

Love em both and Brady is probably 2-3.

Great quarterbacks are those with the greatest accuracy, and Brady is also extremely accurate, as are Brees and Rodgers. Rodgers is probably the most accurate passer I’ve ever seen. He proved that by hitting 22/23 passes in a game he played for Cal against USC. Brady has a better long ball than Montana had and also reads defenses very well.

But, in a single game you had to win, Joe was the man–no mistakes, multiple TD passes, and effortlessly clutch in the 4th quarter. His recognition of John Candy as a member of the crowd in the beginning of the two-minute drive to win Super Bowl against Cincy with a pass to John Taylor was the ultimate in “this dude is cool.” The greatest of the great play their best ball “when it counts most.” That was Joe Montana in a nutshell.

So, will the two teams who loose next Sunday have had a better season than the team who wins next Sunday but then loses on February 3? Of course not.

moral: It is better to go to the Super Bowl and lose than it is to lose earlier in the process, or to not advance in the playoffs at all.

People act like the lose of the Super Bowl make you the #32 team or something. It’s the silver medal, which isn’t what you wanted, but it is way better than not even getting there.

Montana lost in the conference finals three times, for example, and Brady once. Two extra conference finals losses are more of a negative than two extra Super Bowl losses. Montana was one and done 4 times, vs. 2 for Brady.

Right now 4 wins trumps 3 wins, but if it gets to be 4 and 4, those two extra conference championships that Montana did not have because he lost games before then will mean that Brady was better.

If nothing else Atlanta has great tape on how NOT to play Kaepernick. While he is no doubt a dynamic talent I find it hard to believe that he can pull that kind of performance off 2 weeks in a row. We shall see….

Don’t understand the negative response to this comment. This guy is in no way stating that Kaepernick (godamn, I am not looking forward to writing that name over and over again for the next decade or so) is not a game-changing franchise quarterback, he’s just saying that Green Bay clearly had no idea how to defend him, and Atlanta will be in a much better position to play againsthim now that they have playoff film of [the SF QB] to review.
