Tim Tebow’s brother apologizes for gloating over Broncos’ loss

New York Jets backup quarterback Tebow warms up before the start of their NFL football game against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Jacksonville, Florida Reuters

Tim Tebow’s big brother is sorry for taking delight in the loss of Tebow’s former team.

Peter Tebow went on Twitter immediately after the Broncos’ loss to the Ravens on Saturday and said he was happy to see the Broncos lose. He also took a shot at Peyton Manning, the quarterback the Broncos signed to replace Tebow as their starter.

But on Monday, Tebow returned to Twitter and said that with two days to think it over, he no longer believes that it was appropriate to celebrate seeing the Broncos lose.

There’s no word on whether Tim Tebow was the one who told Peter to apologize. Tim Tebow hasn’t tweeted about the Broncos, and although he has more than 2 million Twitter followers, he rarely tweets about anything related to the NFL at all: Not his current team, not his former team, not opposing teams and not anything else about the NFL. And given how often people in the NFL end up getting themselves in trouble by tweeting about the NFL, that’s probably wise.

I wish he hadn’t felt compelled to apologize.

At this level it’s really just a game, and any Broncos fan that was upset by what Peter Tebow said needs to get a grip.

  4. truthfactory says: Jan 14, 2013 6:22 PM

The problem is that he wasnt “rooting for the other team”. He was in fact rooting for someone else’s misfortune. Whats worse is going back on it the next day acting like you’re above it.

  5. canehouse says: Jan 14, 2013 6:24 PM

Very Lame… He said… Now he is backing down from it. I doubt he really feels sorry.

  6. genaro1331 says: Jan 14, 2013 6:24 PM

Hmmm… for some reason… Peter Tebow does not have the same ring to it… although they are probably equally bad at the Quarterback position.

  7. blackandbluedivision says: Jan 14, 2013 6:25 PM

“I may root for another team but I should never gloat about anyone’s misfortune.”

Jeez. Guilt by association. You can be a fan…just not in public.

I’m curious to why he’s still living in Denver if Tim’s no longer there.

  9. kagey7 says: Jan 14, 2013 6:26 PM

The Broncos traded him to his team of choice because he thought he could beat out the starting QB who ended up being the worst QB in the NFL. He had all training camp – almost two months – to prove he could do that. He could not. Then he had the regular season – he could not. Seems to me that’s Tim’s fault but so much easier to blame the Broncos rather than Tim’s lack of QBing skills.

  10. jasonculhane says: Jan 14, 2013 6:28 PM

Why ddes this warrant an apology? Broncos asked for it.

    Some people are too sensitive.

  19. Deb says: Jan 14, 2013 6:39 PM

Sounds like Tim Tebow has a lot more maturity and horse sense than his “older” brother. The bottom line is that no Tebow has any reason to begrudge Peyton Manning anything and certainly not to delight in his misfortune on the football field. Broncos execs didn’t want Tim leading their team, Manning or no Manning.

Peyton Manning is one of the great quarterbacks of this era–recognition he earned with his on-field performance, not by being an off-field cult figure. That healthy Ravens team would have torn Tim Tebow to pieces.

  20. tdk24 says: Jan 14, 2013 6:42 PM

If we have lost the ability to gloat over a sports team winning or losing, then the terrorists have won. Gloat all you want, it’s a free country, no apologizes needed for rooting against the team that traded your brother especially when your bro won a playoff game and the new guy didn’t.

  21. purplekoolaid1 says: Jan 14, 2013 6:43 PM

And at the end of the day, who really cares? A brother of a football tweeted his feelings about a football game. This is news now?

This dude is a man and can make his own choices. Regardless of who he is related to. Tim can’t control him.

Yeah, and Kurt Warner “couldn’t beat out” Tony Banks, Steve Bono, or Trent Green on the practice field either. Just like Tebow “couldn’t beat out” Kyle Orton – until he actually saw game action. He has the second best postseason win percentage in Broncos franchise history.

  23. edithpiaf51 says: Jan 14, 2013 6:46 PM

Gloating on Peyton Manning’s misfortunes is mean. I also felt kind of bad for Peyton when I saw him really emotionally upset during the press conference. I have a soft spot for that kind of emotion. I do believe like Eli, both Mannings are of the top 5 QBs in the NFL. But in this game, I have to admit as a Bronco fan of 40 years, the Broncos beat themselves. Peyton should have taken that sack. He also should not have thrown 2 interceptions and those 2 turnovers cost the Broncos the game. The Ravens are really hot right now.

  24. edithpiaf51 says: Jan 14, 2013 6:52 PM

you are right. you make a very intelligent, valid, and reliable argument. Tim Tebow did win a playoff game and Peyton did not.

Another hypoctitical religious person gloating over peyton manning a man that stayed after an hour and a half to tell ray lewis how fun its been competing against him sll these years after the defeat. Just because his brother isn’t an nfl caliber qb and uses religion to promote his image he thinks he csn bad mouth one of the greatest of all time. Ill be really EXCITED when I don’t have to hear the name tebow in the nfl again

  27. robertocfg says: Jan 14, 2013 7:01 PM

Wow. Why should he apologize? He’s entitled to his opinion, whatever it is. For instance, I dislike the Jets. I hate them. Does that mean I wasn’t allowed to be happy when the Colts beat them in the 2009-2010 AFC Championship Game?

Just because he’s Tim Tebow’s brother, is he not allowed to root for or against a team?

When Michael Vick’s brother tweeted that they wanted out of Philly, he was talking as if he was voicing Michael’s opinion. In this case, Peter Tebow was stating his preferences, and his’ alone. Why can’t he?

  32. rmfp1978 says: Jan 14, 2013 7:07 PM

I’m from st.louis do me a favor and don’t compare tebow to kurt warner. He has a great work ethic and would prob make a good fullback in the nfl. Anyone that thinks hes a good qb is ignorant to the game. There is a reason no team will pick him up people

  33. cleekk says: Jan 14, 2013 7:08 PM

It is a team sport. Just a Peyton shouldn’t have thrown the pick, the defense shouldn’t have allowed a 70 yard touchdown pass with less than 90 seconds left in regulation. It isn’t all on Manning.

Tim Tebow and Ryan Lockhe both come from the same school of thought.

  37. bucrightoff says: Jan 14, 2013 7:30 PM

Tim Tebow, 2nd best winning percentage for a Bronocs playoff QB is hilarious because he’s tied with Jake Plummer, another great college QB who was mostly a loser as an NFL QB. Pretty good doppledanger for Tebow ironically, though Jake avoided the shame of the CFL (or Arena League)

  38. phillyforlife says: Jan 14, 2013 7:30 PM

You know I am sure that a whole lot of other people tweeted gloating remarks about the Broncos loss, And because this guys brother allegedly plays football(only saw him make 2 plays this year and they were both blocks on a D end) this is a story. Why? I once tweeted to T.O. that it was my feeling he got himself black balled out of the league and no one mentioned it, well except for Owens he thanked me for the comment.

  45. caliscooter says: Jan 14, 2013 8:25 PM

What in the world does he need to apologise for? I am by no means a Tebow fan, but if anyone has a right to speak their mind, it would be the Tebow clan.

  46. beauregard says: Jan 14, 2013 8:28 PM

I’m a very long term Bronco fan. The Tweet didn’t offend me. You take the praise when you’re winning (and the Broncos got their share of that) and you take the heat when you lose. Bronco fans can handle that. But the Tebow-Manning comparisons that were flying around after the game were sickening. Realize it was not Tebow himself, but his millions of fans who still hate Denver for trading him. Tebow has nothing to hang his head in shame about. His replacement was Peyton Freaking Manning. There were about 25 NFL starting QB’s last year who would of been replaced if there team could of struck the deal. It’s not Tim Tebow and it’s not Peyton Manning keeping this story going, it’s the millions of Tebow fans who don’t have a football clue.
    Give it up, move on.

  47. bigdawg24 says: Jan 14, 2013 8:29 PM

  48. bduncanscott says: Jan 14, 2013 8:52 PM

  49. steeltuff says: Jan 14, 2013 8:59 PM

  50. rcali says: Jan 14, 2013 8:59 PM

The look on Elways face at the end of that game was priceless. He already had his Superbowl ring fitted only to see his coach and $20 million dollar QB poop the bed. I have no problem with Peter rubbing that one in. They did his brother in.

  51. hotstampjax says: Jan 14, 2013 9:01 PM

  57. judalation says: Jan 14, 2013 9:22 PM

As a Jets fan I wonder what he says about the Jets next year when they don’t even make the playoffs with Sanchez under the Helm….

  58. lanman11 says: Jan 14, 2013 9:29 PM

I wonder what would have happened next week against the Patriots had the Bronco’s won that game? Or what would have happened had they advanced to the SB? It was going to happen anyway. It was just a matter of time. The Bronco’s were seeded higher than they should have been by virtue of a steady diet of sub .500 teams. The only wins they had against better teams were when those teams were either in disarray (Raven’s fire O coordinator and have a bunch of injuries), or they play a team with no real offense, like the Bengals. That blowout win against the Raven’s really set the expectations way too high. Take away the special teams touchdowns and it really wasn’t a good performance all the way around for the Broncos. They did the best they could with what they had. Same goes for the regular season. They maximized their opportunity. However they did not warrant moving on in the tournament. It’s painful to hear, but it’s true.

As for Tebow, I guess he did take them farther with less talent on the roster, and they did in fact run him out of town, so I don’t begrudge a guys brother for pointing that out. It’s family, and as I recall, some of the Bronco players were less than classy in some of their remarks when they go the misguided idea during the season that they were going to go farther with Manning this season. So before jumping the Tebow’s, the Bronco players and the faithful (no pun intended) might take a look in the proverb-ial (again, no pun intended) mirror. From where I sit, Tim Tebow didn’t deserve the negativity thrown his way, and I don’t buy that he’s all that much more of an attention hound than any other NFL narcissist. It’s US, the fans and media that generated the attention, not him. I never heard the guy say a bad word about anybody. That in itself is a huge accomplishment, all things considered.

I bet Belichick signs him and makes him a tight end. LOL! Maybe before this season ends! LOL!

  59. bengalskuta82 says: Jan 14, 2013 9:39 PM

Are you INSANE? Nobody is throwing that guy in federal prison for his tweet!!!! He didn’t even have to apologize! He obviously realized that he created a PR problem for his brother, and revealed himself to to be a petty, small-minded, imbecile. All football fans still have the right to be petty, small-minded imbeciles. What the heck does terrorism have to do with that??

  65. ripster65 says: Jan 14, 2013 9:54 PM

I kinda get a kick out of this. After all, Tebow did get the Broncos a playoff win last year. Tebow let the Denver fans leave the stadium after that Pitt game flying high. Manning, not so much. It would have amounted to a 14 game win streak for Denver to win it all. Not likely. Not, by any means, to imply that the Broncos would be better off had they stuck with Tebow but I can see where his bros’ tweet’s coming from.

Then again maybe bro’s just pissed because brother Timmy may not be a millioniare much longer.

For what it’s worth, I’d bet they’d still have won the division. They would most likely have been playing wild card weekend instead of getting the bye. They’d have been hosting either Cincy or Indy. Yeah, defintely better off w/Manning. That’s a no-brainer. I just thought Tebow was fun to watch and I wish the Jets didn’t take that away this year.

No matter how bad my brother sucked at quarterback(and Tebow does not show much skill at the NFL level) I would always have his back. I’m sure Peter was told what a PR nightmare this was for Tim and was forced to recant. Too bad, he should of been entitled to his opinion!

  76. bostmm says: Jan 14, 2013 11:02 PM

Hey I never thought Tebow was the quarterback answer for ANYBODY but you have to admit for a guy who just wanted to play quarterback he caught a LOT of crap for just being a bad choice by the Denver Broncos !!! Obviously he was not not a Luck or RGIII but what the heck did he do to get such ridicule. He just signed a contract that was offered to him. What was he supposed to do reject the money ? If my brother had been kicked around as much as Tim Tebow was by the press + public I think I might have been a little tempted to do something stupid like he did. I could only hope I would have hit the backspace key instead of submit. Bad momemt for him but I at least give him some credit for sticking up for family — even though it was a REAL bad way to do it.

  77. edithpiaf51 says: Jan 14, 2013 11:41 PM

Yes I am a longterm Bronco fan and yes the team choked. No Question. But Peyton did his share, with 2 interceptions and 2 turnovers. He should have taken the sack at the end too but Peyton has too much pride and is a snob who does Pap Joe’s pizza commercials. Being a marketing professor I notice these things. Peyton is not sweet and humble like his brother Eli. Although it was refreshing and humbling to see Peyton cry during the press conference. It finally showed he was human like his brother Eli.
