Cam Newton returns to Auburn, working toward sociology degree

Two years ago, Cam Newton left Auburn to become the first overall pick in the NFL draft. Now Newton has returned to become a college graduate.

Newton is enrolled at Auburn for spring semester and is working on a sociology degree.

Auburn spokesman Kirk Sampson confirmed to the Associated Press that Newton is currently enrolled as a student, but he said Newton isn’t giving media interviews and just “wants to focus on school and be a normal student.”

After beginning his college career at Florida as Tim Tebow’s backup in 2007 and 2008, Newton transferred to Blinn College for one year and then transferred to Auburn, where he won the national championship and the Heisman Trophy in his one season as an NCAA starter.

Good for him, setting an example for America’s kids that education is vital.

  12. dblockatl says: Jan 15, 2013 2:49 PM

Say what you want about the guy (and hasn’t pretty much everything been said about him?), he’s making $22+ MILLION this year and he’s investing his time working towards a degree and finishing what he started.

Despite being generally disliked, he’s a fun player to watch. Didn’t exactly see it coming, but yes, I find it kind of impressive. Good for Cam.

  13. stoolerz says: Jan 15, 2013 2:49 PM

    Good for him.

  14. justintuckrule says: Jan 15, 2013 2:49 PM

Perfect. He needs to learn how to socialize.

  15. carolinablue13 says: Jan 15, 2013 2:49 PM

I can’t wait to see all of the Cam hate in the following comments. Looking forward to all of the really, really clever laptop jokes!

  16. jbpanthers says: Jan 15, 2013 2:51 PM

But will he be judged for his demeanor in class? Press conferences between breaks?

Oh yeah, I forgot Cam was just wants to be a normal guy. You go Cam, and make us all proud to be fans. We know who Cam is, despite what the “media” might say.

  17. hoops737 says: Jan 15, 2013 2:52 PM

Clearly went back to “pay” the recruits there a visit

  18. rea1talk says: Jan 15, 2013 2:52 PM

going back to school? WASTING money to get a degree in order to make 50-80 k a year? lol college is a fail system anyways, might as well use the millions u have now and invest…. cam just wants to get some college girls, which is not too bad of an investment….

  19. tonystrong says: Jan 15, 2013 2:54 PM

The infamous “sociology” degree for an athlete. That degree is going to do him a lot of good in the future lol. Cam just wants an excuse to bang co-ed’s and hangout on the campus he’s a rock star on. Sorry, not buying Cam is serious about education. His father wasn’t asking schools about their educations during his recruiting lol he was asking about money. Cam will never have to work another day in his life. This “sociology” degree is just so Cam can say he’s a college graduate and enhance his image. Go look team by team of football and basketball players majoring in “sociology” lol it’s most of them and just about every player that is going to have a career in the pros!!!

  20. coltzfan166 says: Jan 15, 2013 2:57 PM

Good for him. A sign that Cam is finally maturing.

  21. whatnojets says: Jan 15, 2013 2:59 PM

    Let’s do the math”

    2 years Florida
    1 year Blinn College
    1 year Auburn

That’s four years of college and yet no degree??

  22. dscol715 says: Jan 15, 2013 3:00 PM

Getting a sociology degree in most cases is worse than not having a degree at all. Four years of lost income, 100k in tuition and a degree in a field that has no employment. We need to debunk this myth that any college degree is a ticket to prosperity.

  23. fuglyflorio says: Jan 15, 2013 3:01 PM

It’s an easy thing to make fun of, but in truth it’s a pretty classy move.

  26. tundey says: Jan 15, 2013 3:04 PM

Man is going back to college. How can anyone find that negative?

  27. boondocksaint7 says: Jan 15, 2013 3:04 PM

Good for him! People can hate him for whatever reasons they have but you can’t fault the man for trying to better himself.

oooo Sociology. Do yourself a favor Cam, get a business degree. That you know, leads to jobs that aren’t handouts for former pro athletes.

  30. packerbackernj says: Jan 15, 2013 3:10 PM

He probably made more money his 1 year at auburn then he has the past 2 years in the nfl.

  31. azarkhan says: Jan 15, 2013 3:11 PM

A degree in sociology is almost as useless as a degree in political science.

  32. themagicman1223 says: Jan 15, 2013 3:14 PM

I’ve always liked Cam people on here need to get off his back, just like people need to stop criticizing the seahawks.

  33. pacific123ocean says: Jan 15, 2013 3:17 PM

Good for Cam! Anybody know how many classes he needs?

  34. it's all bs says: Jan 15, 2013 3:22 PM

80% of these posters need to still finish high school!!!

Nice move Cam….keep up the good work!!!

  35. rbanks51 says: Jan 15, 2013 3:23 PM

    What’s the point of this?

You go to school to find a good job and make as much money as you can. I would say being an NFL QB accomplishes that.

  36. rjkilla says: Jan 15, 2013 3:25 PM

    someones growing up

  37. thatneuneu says: Jan 15, 2013 3:26 PM

The hate for this man is unbelievable. For the guy questioning the fact that he did 4 years of college with no degree please understand that everytime you transfer you lose institutional credits. Secondly, most student aren’t graduating in 4 years, a typical four year student did some summer semesters.

  38. nomoreseasontix says: Jan 15, 2013 3:29 PM

So… His handlers talked him into it to help his image.
    Got it….

I’ll take a handout for former pro athlete job any day of the week, being a commentator sounds awesome. Getting paid to talk about football? I mean, I’m talking about football right now, but I’m being paid to renegotiate online marketing agreements.

  40. cruells says: Jan 15, 2013 3:56 PM

More players should do like Cam instead of laying on a beach somewhere or getting arrested during the off season..

  41. snowpea84 says: Jan 15, 2013 4:11 PM

A sociology degree is a waste of time to begin with, let alone if you have millions of dollars already.

  42. nflofficeadmin says: Jan 15, 2013 4:14 PM

Waste of money and time. focus on your future endevors. that degree will not be a difference maker in his case.

  43. willcool21 says: Jan 15, 2013 4:30 PM

He should be studying Keapernick and Wilsons game tape

  44. lionsdraftguy says: Jan 15, 2013 4:31 PM

Cam thinks the NFL is one big party, what makes anyone think he can commit to a real life degree?

    Hes a joke.

  45. 85pmart says: Jan 15, 2013 4:38 PM

There are some ignorant comments on here.

  46. joshm5683 says: Jan 15, 2013 4:38 PM

@dblockatl he isn’t making 22 million this year. With the new rookie scale his entire contract is worth 20-24 million. I’m sure he’ll renegotiate it sooner rather than later, but he isn’t making that kind of loot yet. I believe Peyton, Brady, and Brees are the only NFL players at 20+ million currently.

  47. stuartscottslazyeyeball says: Jan 15, 2013 5:02 PM

Surprised he didn’t just buy the degree online.

  48. dkrauss93 says: Jan 15, 2013 5:05 PM

He’s making a great decision and becoming more mature. Hopefully this helps him in the long run keeping his head straight.

  49. bengalsown says: Jan 15, 2013 5:30 PM

You would think he’d put more of an emphasis on film study and working with a trainer to improve upon his football skills.

He’ll make significantly more from his first NFL contract than he will from the age of 35-65 combined, might as well do what he can in order to make sure he gets a larger 2nd contract.

    He’s wasting his time.

  50. granadafan says: Jan 15, 2013 5:32 PM

I don’t have much of an opinion one way or another about Cam, but I cannot fault his decision to finish his degree. Sociology is a rather broad subject but having the degree sets a good example to his young fans. Even though you may have millions, having a degree is priceless in terms of knowledge and having the education to make future decisions.

  51. wabbitslayer says: Jan 15, 2013 5:33 PM

    Hurry kids…..hide your laptops!!!

  52. kegowhisky says: Jan 15, 2013 5:53 PM

Cam sure can stir up all the haters, but they’re probably unjustified here. Maybe he could use a business degree more in the future to learn how to hold on to his cash, but hey, he can hire someone to do that (Hey Cam – No family members!) I think the real deal here is that a degree is an accomplishment no matter what the major, and Cam feels unfulfilled without one. I give him credit!

  53. jackblackshairyback says: Jan 15, 2013 5:54 PM

I’m not a Cam fan, not a hater either. But something tells me he doesn’t have to go back to school too get chicks.

Oh, and there its life after football. Going back to school and getting his degree is a smart move. More athletes should do this.

  54. genericcommenter says: Jan 15, 2013 5:56 PM

He’s really going to skew the average earnings of Sociology graduates. Some of them might even think they can actually get jobs.

  55. giantsfanlewis says: Jan 15, 2013 6:11 PM

Does anyone else see cam going back to school as a terrible idea. I mean what happened to big Ben when he hung out at a college after he became famous?

  56. green41563 says: Jan 15, 2013 6:24 PM

Thank God he’ll have his degree. Now maybe he can make millions of dollars.

  57. ninthwardfriend says: Jan 15, 2013 6:27 PM

Great Cam! That’s being a true role model.

  58. laserw says: Jan 15, 2013 6:30 PM

Don’t trust his honor pledge – he has already cheated and fled one institution – this guy will not do the right thing and will take the easy way out. Make him take tests alone and check his papers for plagiarism.

  59. coin4me says: Jan 15, 2013 7:53 PM

He’s going back to college to remember how to win.

  60. lemfaxx says: Jan 15, 2013 8:02 PM

    Smart kid

  61. jiggybone says: Jan 15, 2013 8:02 PM

All those that are hating on CAM for going back and getting his DEGREE are just madd because you dont have one and dont want to see someone else be successful. And as far as Im concerned you can kick rocks.

  62. coachbeck says: Jan 15, 2013 9:11 PM
