Comments on: McCarthy “very confident” Capers will be back as defensive coordinator

I keep seeing comments-it’s the players, not the coach–the COACH is responsible for making sure players get their jobs done–Packers were inconsistent on both sides of the ball all year–for a defensive coach to have 6-7 or more game films to prepare for a QB like Kaepernick and then NOT have adjustments ready to stop him–it’s INEXCUSABLE–he’s a RUNNING QB and has been since named starter–Capers defense looked like they’ve never seen one. His defense is lackadaisical in tackling–no intensity outside of Matthews–his secondary was out of position in Niners playoff game and that’s a carry over from the last two Vikings games–COACH has to prepare team, has to make sure players give REAL effort, do their jobs–these guys have had ALL season–it’s MORE THAN PLAYERS–coaching has a big responsibility in this problem.

He is incapable of adjusting during the game and has consistently come up with poor defensive game plans that took no regard of the opponent they were playing. His retention guarantees early playoff exits for the Packers.

Dude, Capers did a fine job. Everyone was talking about how the defense would be great in the playoffs with everyone returning, but I didn’t buy that for a second. I don’t care what position on what team you play on, you need time together to build chemistry in order to be successful. You need to know the tendencies & reactions of the guys around you. You need to know that the deep safety has the catch up speed to cover you over the top if the WR beats you off the line. You need to know that your DE/OLB will contain to the outside to push the play inside rather than bite on inside action. The Packers were without a lot of key players on defense for a while this year & just because Woodson & Matthews were healthy in time for the playoffs didn’t mean they were automatically going to gel together. Chemistry is an extremely important aspect to a championship team. I mean, the best player on the Packers’ defense this year was a rookie 2nd round pick from Vandy, Casey Hayward. That says a lot about how ravaged that unit was by injuries & underachievement this year. The fault lies with the players, not Capers.

Tyrone Williams was a complete bust in both games. His coverage was terrible and he looked afraid to tackle.

Dom Capers has coached 19 years and had a top 9 defense (in points allowed) in 9 of them and his defenses put him in the 62nd percentile (meaning he’s better than 60 percent of all coaches all-time), at least according to pro-football-reference.com. Bear in mind he coached two expansion clubs during that time – Houston and Carolina.

Maybe not Hall of Fame worthy, but hardly “historically pathetic”.

Every team, every coach, has their bad days. And when they do, fans either bark for change or beg for forgiveness. It’s very predictable.

I thought the d was playing fine until that muffed punt. Even after that, they stopped the Niners on 3 downs then hopped offsides on fourth.

What pissed me off as I watched was McCarthy’s horrible play calling. The first drive of the game, Three passes in a row. Up tempo. Three and out. Right after Frisco had ground out a long drive for a touchdown. And the d was still on the field from Sam Sheild’s pick 6 the drive before.

The d was wore down completely. Look at the time of possession. That is unacceptable against a team like the Niners. And you’re calling for Capers’ head?

Hey veeence, if your team is so tough, why did your baby of a QB sit out the last game? Soft. Why did Peterson only get 99 yards in one of the biggest games of his life? Soft. Why does harvin sit out when he has a headache? Soft. Why did Jared Allen have fewer sacks than a Packers player who missed 1/3 of the season? Soft.

The offseason: where Vikings fans are filled with idiotic delusions of grandeur.

The regular season: where the Vikings fans disappear for months on end, hoping their coach gets fired, their QB gets benched, and where their dreams always die.

Here`s my opinion. I think Dom Capers needs to go but it`s not entirely his fault. I think his system works if you have the right players. The Packers no longer have the right players. The loss of Cullen Jenkins and Nick Collins really hurt the defense. Those players were not replaced with equal talent. Other than Clay Mathews the Packers don`t have anyone on defense that stands out. I guess a case for Raji could be argued. The DB`s arent intimidating at all. When was the last time one of the db`s really laid someone out ? The Packers have some young players and maybe they will be the answer in the long run but we need good defensive players now while we still have a good offense.

Lets all blame Capers….but it was Erik Walden who fell for the option to Gore on two occasions and lost edge containment on Kapernick.

The defensive coordinator puts the players in the position to make the play, if the player fails on his read… you blame the d coordinator?

Matthews couldn’t beat Staley 1v1 all game allowing the d line to double team the DT or NT and you blame Capers for that?

I’ll preface my comment by saying the defense definitely could have performed better throughout the season and in the playoffs, but I find it interesting McCarthy doesn’t receive more criticism for his less than stellar play calling. In nearly every game the offense stalled and suffered from three and outs which has to be tough on any defense. Throw in the on again off again no huddle and some of those possessions were less than one minute to time of possession. Solving the offensive line issues and generating some consistency in the running game could go a long way toward resolving some of the defensive shortcomings we’ve seen over the past couple years. That’s just my opinion.

I love the Packers. McCarthy is an adequate coach at best, he’s made some bonehead calls and apparently doesn’t know the rules. Capers is a total bust. He has a good defensive nucleus but his schemes are the same no matter what the situation. His 3-4 lacks any imagination and he fails to recognize what all fans can see during the game. We need a good DC now. If we go to the playoffs again and get humiliated again I can see McCarthy and Capers packing their bags. McCarthy you are hanging with a loser!

He’s been on the hot seat for two seasons now. Packers D has talent but plays poorly all too often.
Capers inability to make in game adjustments should get him fired no doubt… Hire Lovie Smith as D Coord!!!

No doubt the defense put on its worst performance of the year. The ‘studs’, Matthews and Raji didn’t play well, the good players, Woodson and T. Williams, Hawk and Burnett were below average and their average players were totally lost.

Capers can’t make silk purses out of a cow’s ear. They were playing a third string Lb next to two undrafted LB’s along with more than a couple rookies playing extended time.

The Viking fans can rejoice in this but remember, Ponder is your QB next year. Good luck with that.

Woodson will need to take a huge paycut I think if he wants to stay for another year. I like Dajuan Harris as a nice change of pace back, If they can find a decent Running back out there in the draft.
I also oddly think that Jennings will actually be back somehow.

A coach is only as good as the talent around him. Capers can put them in a position to make plays but he cannot make the tackles or catch the ball for them. For the third straight year the Packers had a huge amount of season ending injuries. Having to rely on third string linebackers to make big plays is not a good situation to be in. Injuries are a part of football but the question for Green Bay is why they always have so many more injuries than other teams. Maybe their strength and conditioning program should be brought into question.

Its true it isn’t AJ Hawk’s job to cover WRs, but it is his job to cover a TE every once in a while. Hawk can’t cover, can’t tackle, and is turning into a bigger knucklehead every year.

It’s high time for a new defensive coordinator to be brought in. Please chose a guy with a 3-4 background this time. Can’t go switching schemes again. I’d like to see what rob Ryan has to offer. He’s too brash but the small town atmosphere may be able to drown that out a bit. I want a d coordinator that puts some fight and intensity back in our defense.

When the Packers beat my Steelers in Super Bowl XLV two seasons ago, I thought the defense–specifically Clay Matthews–should have been MVP. Capers coached that defense, too. Now suddenly his defenses are “historically pathetic”??? Give me a break. Capers hasn’t suddenly forgotten how to coach. Injuries and sloppy performance play a role here, too.

As bad as the Packers defense is…..they still won their division, which is goal No. 1. Until the other division teams can stop them from scoring, we’ll win it again next year.
