Bill Belichick shoots down questions about his coaching legacy

AP

If the Patriots win their next two games, coach Bill Belichick will tie the all-time NFL records for postseason victories and Super Bowl titles by a head coach. But Belichick doesn’t want to talk about that — or any other aspect of his coaching career — right now.

Asked at his press conference today about his status as the active coach who has lasted the longest with his current team, Belichick brushed it off as irrelevant.

“I’m just trying to think about the Ravens,” Belichick said. “We’re trying to get ready to win the AFC Championship Game. I’m not really too concerned about how long anybody has or has been with any other team, or how long I’ve been here, or anything else. I don’t really care about any of that, with all due respect.”

Asked a follow-up question about his coaching legacy, Belichick reiterated that he doesn’t want to think about such questions right now.

“Right now I’m trying to beat the Ravens,” Belichick said. “That’s where our football team’s challenge is. That’s what we’re focused on. The rest of it is for another time and another place.”

Belichick was clearly not in the mood to talk about history. When another reporter asked him what Tom Brady does better now than he did in the Patriots’ first Super Bowl run after the 2001 season, Belichick muttered, “I’d say pretty much everything,” and moved on to the next question.

When asked questions about the upcoming game against the Ravens, Belichick was effusive in his praise. And he made clear that the Ravens are all he’s thinking about.

  1. I have no real opinion either way, but I wonder after last week’s baseball HOF snubs, when the day comes for Bellichick to be voted into into the HOF, if the SpyGate thing will still linger and cause him to miss out.

  2. Compare his media session,,effusive praise for the opponents to Harbaugh’s media session. The ravens maven,,spotting about how his guys are gods,,,they got stronger as thegame goes on,,,even double overtime,,they were ready to play another 60 minutes. If Manning had been even close to brady’s talent,,,the ravens would be packing their wall lockers right now. You won in denver, because,,,manning simply is DONE,,he can’t SLING it or Bring it for a full 60 minutes anymore… TIED game with 45 seconds? Manning Kneels down. 2001 superbowl 1:08 left,,,Brady drives them down field for a winning FG…against the greatest show on turf. THAT IS THE BOTTOM LINE

  3. Most reporters are truly terrible at their job and ask very stupid and irrelevant questions just to fill space. I can only imagine how much disdain a guy like Belichick must have for these hacks, except for the few good ones out there.

  4. I don’t know man. He cheated, they got caught, he paid the price. Got to see the Pat’s live for the first time this past season in Seattle. However you slice it, that’s a damn good football team. I think his overall record will overcome any doubters regarding the team in the early 2000’s.

  5. Right now he’s the best, and given what he has accomplished in the era of salary cap, free agency, and the relentless NFL desire to impose parity, he is probably the best of all time. Contrary to what some nutcases say, he never has to win another Super Bowl to go directly to the HOF after he retires.

  6. Even though it’s BB being BB, I always feel for the reporters who either don’t know better or do and ask stuff like this anyway. The definition of “awkward pause” is the one after someone asks BB a question like these.

At least TB was on the podium next and he was overly polite while answering idiotic questions like ones about his magazine poses.

  7. AGAIN, what Belichick was doing was LEGAL until the NFL sent out a memo prior to the 2006 season saying that teams can no longer video tape other teams’ signals. Other coaches such as Jimmy Johnson and Bill Cowher have came out and said they were doing the same thing back in the day. The fact is that most coaches were doing it. What Belichick did wrong was continue to tape signals during the 2006 season and week 1 of 2007, but the Pats’ 3 rings were NOT tarnished. I don’t understand why it’s so difficult for Patriot haters to comprehend this…

  8. If he does not win a post spygate Super Bowl then his legacy is the Lance Armstrong of coaches.
    ********************************************

As if losing 2 SBs by a total of 7 points is something to be ashamed of, after winning 3 by a total of 9 points

He’s won around 75% of his games since the Spygate thing came to light. Year in and year out the Pats are contenders for a SB title. And yet people still post tripe like the stuff quote above.

It’s like people puts their brains in park before posting here.

  9. Why even ask that question? You know what the answer is going to be.

You CAN often ask him for football opinions and football strategy, about how the game is played differently now than in the past, etc. but most media just ask stuff with a 0% chance of a meaningful answer coming back.

Don’t ask him about records, legacies, officiating, or what someone’s injury status is. It a waste of time trying.

  10. Lets face it,all the fools in here hate the pats because they contend every year and are in the conversation of title contenders and have won titles. If the pats were 4-12 every year would people on here hate them so much? Don’t think so! Winning comes with envy and jealousy.

  11. You act like his answer is strange, what do you expect him to say to a dumb question about his legacy right before he plays the AFC championship game? Keep it in your pants media, there’s a time and a place.

  12. His legacy? Consistently winning 12+ games per season in the salary cap era with constantly shifting personnel. Detractors will point to spygate, but since then he’s made a Superbowl and led a bunch more excellent seasons. He’ll be remembered as one of the greatest football minds of all time.

  13. Alright guys. The dude is a legend. Enough with the spygate nonsense. You do realize they taped coaches giving hand signals that were visible to every single person in the entire stadium right?

Every opposing coach, every little boy in the 3rd row, and every flying insect in the stadium could get a pad of paper and jot down the signal motion, down-and-distance, and defensive coverage and get the same result. Which is why most good coaches changed their signals all the time to protect them.

Hate the Pats all you want, but it won’t change the fact that Belichick will go down as one of the best 2-3 coaches ever and nothing you type here will change that.

  14. I flat out can’t stand the Patriots…but doesn’t it seem like they just seem to try harder to win than other organizations?
They are constantly trying to improve…bringing people in…adjusting what they do…I do hate them – but they really do make other teams look timid and lazy as far as trying to win.

There are no excuses made in Patriot Land.

  15. Belichick is one of those coaches who should just have an audio recording set up for his press conferences to say things like “I’m just focused on next week and the [INSERT TEAM NAME]” with clips of each team.

And given the questions that get asked, would anyone blame him?

  16. It is disturbing how many sports fans don’t care about cheating or sportsmanship. People get so upset when Steroid cheats are ousted out of the baseball hall of fame. And get upset when people point out that Belicheck is a cheater.

It is a fact that Brady fumbled the ball and that first super bowl should have never happened. Then the other two- the patriots were underdogs, fairly unimpressive teams but they surprisingly pulled out victories. Then we find out they were filming the other teams. Everything made sense.

Goodell destroyed the tapes because had a reporter sat down and watched the tapes and compared them to how the patriots responded to plays- it would have clarified just how big a fraud Bill Belicheck is. He is a cheat.

  17. I think it’d be lulzy to walk around all day saying Belichickian things:

Boss: Yesterday was the 3rd Monday in a row that you called in sick. What’s the deal?
Me: I can’t really comment on that, I’m not a doctor. I come into work when I’m cleared to come into work.

Dunkin Donuts gal: Another day, another sausage egg & cheese on an everything bagel. Switch it up a little, will you?
    Me: Customer’s decision.

Girlfriend: So, I can pretty much write off seeing you at all on Sundays during the Fall.
Me: Look, I’m just trying to watch a football game.

  18. Did you hear Brady’s answer after the game when he was asked how he felt about breaking Montana’s record? They teach humility up there in New England.

  19. For me to consider Belichick one of the greatest coaches of all time I’d have to see him coach without brady for more than one year (yes I’m aware he did it with Cassel). I doubt I’ll get that chance though because he’ll probably retire the same time as Brady….I think everyone can agree that in football it’s all about talent. When Belichick had no talent in Cleveland he sucked…when he was given talent in New England he succeeded. A true great coach i.e. Don Shula does it with multiple quarterbacks who maybe aren’t superstars

  20. Pats fans can give thumbs down all they want. The fact remains he was caught cheating. It may be different if the pats won 3 blowouts but they won each Super Bowl by a FG.

That is very close which means the difference may very well have been the spygate cheating.

His legacy is that while he is a very good coach, his championships will always be doubted. Just like lance Armstrong. Maybe Armstrong wins the tour once or twice without cheating but most will doubt that.

  21. The media knows what his answer will be,they do this to get something to write about ,so they at least have some type of interesting topic.I doubt that any media person out there would be that green after 12 years of getting the same type of answer ,now it is done to get his stock answers and what little there is to write about to fill blogs and sportscasts. He has never given any real info so they write about him being cold and unemotional .

  22. One thing that can’t be changed is public opinion and that opinion is the Patri*ts cheated. Unfortunately for all you “die-hard” Patri*ts fans perception is reality. No matter how you want to slice it, an “unfair competitive advantage” = cheating.

Its always the same hand full of posters with same same crap. Most of the stuff they post is inaccurate.

  24. LOL at pats fan- pointing out that the cheating wasnt technically illegal before a memo was passed out- which is false, the memo REMINDED teams it was against the rules. And other coaches said taping signals didnt have effect or that they tried it and it had no benefit.

WOW- that is exactly what other baseball steriod cheats said! Bottom line, Goodell destroyed the tapes, if the cheating was benign he would have let the reporters all check it out for themselves. Therefore, we must assume the worst the patriots were frauds.

  25. Then the other two- the patriots were underdogs, fairly unimpressive teams but they surprisingly pulled out victories. Then we find out they were filming the other teams. Everything made sense.

They went 14-2 in both of those seasons and were the odds favorite in the SB, get a clue. You clearly don’t know what you are talking about.

  26. Not a Patriot fan at all. But all these morons that keep bringing up spygate need to get a clue. He will go down as one of the best coaches of all time. As a fan of the pathetic Chargers. I’m not the only one on here who would love to have Belichick as the coach of my team.

    ——————–

You mean the tapes that everyone saw after Goddell held a press conference showing the tapes to everyone?

You mean the tapes where Herman Edwards waived at the video guy?

The tapes of signals EVERY SINGLE PERSON in the stadium could have seen?

The tapes that the immunity granted whistle blower said he never let leave his possession during a game therefor negating any in game cheating?

If you think spygate was any more than VERY detailed scouting, you are a fool.

  28. Also the Pats had extremely good teams in 2003 and 2004. Also in every year after with the exception of maybe 2005.

  29. Im sorry when a coach is caught cheating then his legacy goes down the drain. But in the case of Bill he took his team to another superbowl, and deep into the playoffs repeatedly. On another topic i dont know how he remained to be a part of the NFL. When people in a sport are caught cheating then they should be banned or atleast get the New Orleans treatment, not a slap on the wrist and still be allowed to draft and coach players.
Ultimately he will be remember as one of the greatest coaches but also as a cheater. If he takes his team to another superbowl then he will have cleared the notion he is where he is in his career because he knew what the other teams play signals were. Thats a good chance of that IF unless Ray Lewis has it in him to take his team to the promised land one last time with a injury torn defensive back field. And if Joe Flacco can become great and out play both Manning and Brady to a superbowl.

And he once took the Browns to the playoffs…THE BROWNS.

That right there should get him into the hall.

So Bill Walsh wasn’t a great coach?

    8-24 without Montana.

And in Cleveland he didn’t entirely suck.
They did go to the playoffs and have back to back winning seasons then the team was moved.

  35. To all the people still whining about Spygate: Filming signals was, and still is, LEGAL. The only thing they did wrong was to film them from the sideline instead of the coach’s box. That’s it.

  36. This is so funny. Why do so many fans forget the press conference that Goodell had with a TV monitor showing what was on the tapes? Scoreboard, a bunch of coaches making hand gestures, cheerleaders, crowd, etc. Not much to see.

What did he destroy? Did you want to see that boring video over over again. People act like these tapes could have proven who killed Kennedy. Get over it.

  37. So the Pats have the best record in football since “spygate” (aka ESPN tabloid-gate). They have been to 2 Super Bowls since with a completely different team than the ones that won the first 3. And are now 1 win away from their 3rd in 6 years (2 wins away from winning it).

The Pats had leads in the final minute of both games. So because Tyree catches a ball off his helmet, and Wes Welker drops a ball he usually catches in his sleep, it means the Patriots “haven’t won anything since spygate”. Please. Enough. 2 more wins and this non-story finally takes its last breath.

  38. Thank-you to all the fans of other NFL teams who recognize what Coach Belichick has done to transform the NE franchise, not only by building a winning mentality through hard work, thoroughness and humility, but by helping young, troubled athletes get on the road to maturity. We thank owner Bob Kraft for realizing BB’s exceptional talents and for bringing him here. It’s extremely hard to win in the NFL and you need fans who will not give up on their team, even when fans of other teams belittle you. We finally earned respect in the league, except from the jealous and envious subhumans whose opinions don’t matter anyway, and, for fans of storied franchises, like the Chargers, Vikings, Bills, and for younger teams, like the Jaguars, I hope your team develops a Champion someday, too; even the Jets, who have been down long enough. Coach Belichick is right up there with Tom Landry and Chuck Noll when you think of best NFL coaches in history and I still don’t see any asterisk beside his team’s name when I read the lsts of Champions. Farewell my fellow NFL fans and keep the faith; your day will come.

  39. If you watched the end of the Superbowl last year and still think that Belicheat’s a genius you’re delusional. It was like the Keystone cops out there. Brady on the pats 1st possession of the Super Bowl cost his team two points with a safety on an ill-advised throw into the middle of the field. When he had a chance to come back and bring them to victory failed again. He’s good but he’s not perfect and certainly no Joe Montana. The whole patriots organization admitted that they cheated and the fans still can’t. very funny. Belicheat is the Mark McGwire of NFL coaches. Were always left to wonder how good he would have been had he not cheated.

  40. For people who say “Belichick SUCKED in Cleveland”, you have no clue. First, he took over one of the worst teams in football. It took a couple years to clean house and start over even benching a Cleveland icon (Bernie Kosar). Second, he led the Browns to the playoffs in 1994. Third, his last year in Cleveland was the year it was announced they were moving from Cleveland to Baltimore. The turmoil there was incredible. Watch A Football Life on NFLN about Belichick. It explains how bad it was in Cleveland.

Was he the HOF coach Belichick in Cleveland? No. Was he media friendly in Cleveland? No. Is he now?!? No. I’m not saying he was great by any stretch, but he simply wasn’t as bad as people say.

Funny how in the first draft in Baltimore, the newly christened Ravens selected Jonathan Ogden and Ray Lewis in the first round. Wish Belichick had a chance to coach them.

His coaching legacy, Ha, what a joke. We all know his coaching legacy. He transformed a mediocre coach into a “great” coach and an OK QB into a “great” QB by cheating.

Dude there’s enough evidence and other coaches speaking up about the video taping scandal to know that everyone was doing it and the rules changed in 2006. It’s very ignorant to state that everyone of the pats wins and championships are tarnished.

  42. League did not release all tapes. Also, it was reported teams accused the pats of stealing their audio as well as those videos. That would have been the real smoking gun but Goodell made all that disappear.

  43. You Belichick lovers act like he should get a pass for Spygate. He cheated, plain and simple. If it doesn’t give you a competitive edge, then why do it?

As close as many of the Pat’s games were back in those Superbowl years, I’m sure Spygate helped immensely to secure victory in very close games, especially the Rams Superbowl.

Still, no SB wins since Spygate, this year included! Ravens will roll!!!!

  44. The best was his response to Rachel Nichols idiotic question about how Tom Brady has improved in the playoffs since his first “1 or 2 years.”

He looks at her condescendingly. “Pretty much everything.”

Then he looks straight ahead. 10 seconds of complete silence. A few of the guys in the front row start looking at the floor and snickering.

I’d say it’s still him with his hatred for the mothership, but he answered Mike R’s better question. BB… he’s such a jerk, but love having him as the Pats coach.

  45. Then the other two- the patriots were underdogs, fairly unimpressive teams but they surprisingly pulled out victories. Then we find out they were filming the other teams. Everything made sense.

Unimpressive? Right…21 games in a row and back to back Superbowls.

    Unimpressive.

  46. Then the other two- the patriots were underdogs, fairly unimpressive teams but they surprisingly pulled out victories. Then we find out they were filming the other teams. Everything made sense.

    *******************************************
    “Fairly unimpressive teams”?

They went a combined 34-4 in 2003-2004 and were favored in both SBs over Carolina and Philly. They won 21 games in a row in that span. In 2004 they beat the living hell out of Peyton’s Colts and then went into Pittsburgh and beat the living hell out of the 15-1 Steelers to get to the SB.

They dominated those two seasons like no team in recent memory. They were clearly the best team in football during that time.

You have no clue what you’re talking about.

  47. If you haven’t watched a Belichick press conference before, you’re missing out on pure awesomeness.

His best ones are after cold, wet games where he just snorts right into the mic. I love the disdain he has for the pompous, narcissistic sports reporters.

  48. I am a Redskins fan, but also a fan of great NFL football, so I like lots of teams and specific players and coaches. I like BB, Tom Brady and I love the Gronk. But one of the biggest reasons I like BB is his press conferences, which I find hilarious. He does pissed-about-whatever better than anyone. Win, Lose, Legacy: All the same Pain in his arse if it’s asked him by the media. I note that his smile is when one corner of his upper lip slightly twitches up. They need to make a commercial out of his press conferences. Hollyweird could not script a funnier old grump. I look forward to this legacy one tonight on NFL network.

    @jacksonvillejags4life

I guess Bill Walsh was a terrible coach. He only had Montana.

    8-24 without Montana

  50. He’s much better than Bill Parcels, that’s all I know. Bob Kraft, Bill Bilichick and Tom Brady have created a culture of winning in NE, and it has been impressive. Brady already looked like Joe Cool when he lead his team from down two TD’s in the 3rd vs Alabama in the Orange Bowl, to a one point victory. Coach was smart enough to recognize his intelligence and coolness under fire, to replace Bledsoe. The rest is history.

  51. Belichick will have no problem getting into the Hall of Fame. Those who know the game have moved past “SpyGate.” It is only opposing fans that continue to harp on it.

  52. hockeyfan1701 says: Jan 16, 2013 12:05 PM

I hate the Patriots, but I respect him. He is a great coach. He gets it done with whatever players he is given. The year he did not have Brady he went 11-5.

    —————————————————-

One thing wrong…they didn’t make the playoffs!!!

  53. Doing it year in and year out is what makes Bellichick the best. I wouldn’t want any other coach in the league.

  54. It’s hilarious how misinformed some people are about spygate and how that misinformation spreads to otherwise innocent observers.

I live in NY and most of the people I hear talking about spygate erroneously think the Patriots were punished for filming opposing team’s practices.

They also falsely believe the contents of the tapes were never shown to the public.

The truth is simply that people don’t understand what the Patriots were accused of or how they used the tapes.

The media contributed to this by spending hours and hours speculating on how the footage was used and jumping the gun with sensationalistic headlines like “Cheater”.

The Patriots were guilty of and penalized for violating a rule. That in and of itself doesn’t make them cheaters. Whether they cheated depends on how that footage was used. If they used it to decipher opposing teams signals in the same game the footage was taken, then I would agree….They are cheaters.

But this is not the case. That is not how the footage was used, nor is it even logistically possible to use it that way.

The Patriots used the footage in an attempt to decipher the audible tendencies of opposing defensive coordinators. They kept detailed files on every defensive coordinator in the league to figure out how they might respond to specific situations. Spygate was nothing more than extremely advanced scouting.

Opposing fans will believe what they want to believe, facts be damned. Their views are largely irrelevant. All Belichick does is win. His winning percentage is actually better after spygate than it was before and after spending 2008-2010 rebuilding the team on the fly, he once again has a team on his hands capable of winning multiple championships.

The question I have is when the Patriots win 3 or more Super Bowls over the next five years or so, will that be considered a “new” Patriots dynasty or simply a continuation of the last one? Anybody have any thoughts on that.

    1. “miracle catch” Tyree – stopped your perfect season
    2. “dropped pass” Welker – stopped your last SB
    or
