We know that former Oregon coach Chip Kelly never publicly declared, “I’m not going to be the Eagles coach.”
But what was he saying privately?
That’s not yet specifically known. What is known is that, per a source with knowledge of the situation, the current Oregon players were surprised (along with everyone else) by the news that Kelly had left. Also surprised, as Peter King points out on Twitter, was Oregon recruit Nico Falah, who said, “Chip Kelly left?!?! He was at my house two days ago.”
With Kelly interviewing recently with both the Browns and Eagles before staying at Oregon, recruits and their parents surely were asking him whether he was committed to Oregon or whether he’d simply leave a year from now. (They likely didn’t think to ask whether he’d be leaving, you know, a week from now.)
Regardless, Chip Kelly at a minimum was tiptoeing through a minefield of potential prevarications in recent days, and there surely are some who believe that the former Oregon head coach was being less than honest. Technically, any comment other than “if they sweeten the offer enough I’m still leaving” would have been less than honest.
