Report: Chip Kelly targets Todd Grantham for defensive coordinator

Grantham

As it turns out, Todd Grantham and Dan Quinn were on the short list to become Philly’s next defensive coordinator not because the team planned to fill the position before hiring a coach, but because each was a top choice of the teams’ primary head-coaching candidates.

Quinn was tied to Seahawks defensive coordinator Gus Bradley.  And Grantham is tied to Chip Kelly.

According to CSNPhilly.com, Kelly is attempting to persuade Grantham to become the Eagles’ next defensive coordinator.  Currently, Grantham serves as the defensive coordinator at Georgia.

Whoever it is, it’s a critical hire.  The Eagles under Andy Reid weren’t the same on defense after the death of Jim Johnson.  With Kelly running the offense, they need a great teacher and tactician on the other side of the ball.

Wow, no love for this story with all the T’eo stuff going on?

  2. chuckiesez says: Jan 16, 2013 7:56 PM

Can they get a package deal with Grantham and Jarvis Jones? That would help. They better hire a great DC because Chip will find out fast that defense is actually played in the NFL, and there are not that many video game style 60 point games for his ‘system’

    Should have brought back Juanita

  4. stevincinci says: Jan 16, 2013 8:05 PM

Ha, Philly’s coach is named “Chip”. Not very intimidating. “The Chipster has spoken”.

  5. dscol715 says: Jan 16, 2013 8:12 PM

Shouldn’t someone on the staff have NFL experience?

  6. razorbyrd says: Jan 16, 2013 8:12 PM

I’ll take Grantham as a DC. He’s always been able to get his D-lines to play BIG, something the Eagles definitely need.

  7. Deb says: Jan 16, 2013 8:12 PM

Grantham, do you really want to work for Chip Kelly? Really? Sit tight and wait for head-coaching job.

  8. phillyphever says: Jan 16, 2013 8:17 PM

Great, two important members of the coaching staff now being filled by college coaches. Sigh, I’ve resigned to the fact that the only way the Eagles can come out of the basement is going 0-16 and forcing Lurie to sell the team to someone who has a passion for football and not money/attention.

The nfc east should be interesting next year.RG3,Monte kiffin with the cowboys, chip kelly, giants!?

I heard Grantham was on thin ice at Georgia anyway…..His defense was shredded several times this season

  11. iamthot says: Jan 16, 2013 8:36 PM

Philly fans got what they’ve been asking for. Good luck at 2-14 next yr

  12. philswfc08 says: Jan 16, 2013 8:40 PM

Great, UGA probably had more legit pro talents on their defense than the eagles do and they couldn’t stop anyone.

  13. gallaghedj311 says: Jan 16, 2013 8:42 PM

Hey I’ll take 0-16 and the first overall pick and take a once in a lifetime DE in Clowney out of South Carolina. That kid is a beast!

  14. inunouchi says: Jan 16, 2013 9:05 PM

C’mon……How can you be ripping the Kelly hire before he has even started…What winning 90% of your games the past three years, winning those games by an average of over 30pts per game ( remember, oregon playes defense as well) and doing it with an average 3 star recruit. He may succeed, maybe not. Time will tell. But what do you want……
    1) A hugely successful college coach
    2) A failed head coach from another pro team
    3) A NFL co-ordinator who has absolutely no track record.
I will wait an see how it plays out

  15. m3dman3 says: Jan 16, 2013 9:06 PM

Well now it’s no mystery Jarvis Jones is their first pick

  16. kane337 says: Jan 16, 2013 9:09 PM

Todd Grantham was a coach on the Cowboys staff before becoming the D-Coordinator at Georgia.

  17. The Shoeman says: Jan 16, 2013 9:29 PM

    Todd Grantham has NFL experience:

    Indianapolis Colts (1999-2001)
Grantham was hired by Jim Mora in 1998 to coach the Defensive Line.

    Houston Texans (2002-2004)
After Jim Mora was relieved of his duties in Indianapolis, Grantham would move on to the newly formed Houston Texans.

  18. reasonablemindsays says: Jan 16, 2013 9:32 PM

Grantham was a coach in the NFL for many years before heading to Georgia. He helped improve the defensive lines (when he was d-line coach) of the Texans and Cowboys when he was there. He struggled in Cleveland, but then he really helped Georgia emerge as a BCS contender.

He’s a real fiery guy and Philly fans will love him right away.

  19. mojosmagic says: Jan 16, 2013 9:43 PM

Two years and Philly will be back contending. Eli, and Tony are on the downside and who knows if RG3 will be the same player after Shannahan all but destroyed the kid. I am not even a Skin fan and I’m pissed he was allowed to play.

  20. kahunanc says: Jan 16, 2013 9:46 PM

When you have 53 players how does Chip plan to run a play a minute practices ? Any team can win on Sunday. This should get interesting quickly. Especially with Chip answering to Howie.

  21. fuglyflorio says: Jan 16, 2013 9:51 PM

Jump on the pistol train before it leaves the station. Philly’s going college. Rah rah … sis boom bah.

  22. stikolaboloni says: Jan 16, 2013 10:03 PM

Grantham was an NFL assistant for 10 years and coached the Cowboys d-line in 08. He’s a 3-4 guy, which I wouldn’t mind if they can get Jarvis Jones at #4

  23. thestrategyexpert says: Jan 16, 2013 10:15 PM

I was scrolling too quickly and I thought I saw Gunther Cunningham and almost had a heart attack of relief thinking the Lions would have to find somebody new. Dang it! Can you guys please spoon feed me the news more carefully?

  24. rjoppen says: Jan 16, 2013 10:28 PM

Grantham is a cancer, how soon we forget that he was fired in Cleveland for sandbagging and sticking Romeo Crennel in the back every chance he got, hoping he would be the replacement when RAC was fired. He’s not even a good DC. Grantham is a snake and Chip Kelly is a flake. Match made in heaven .. whole thing smells like a burning dumpster

  25. eaglesfanintx says: Jan 16, 2013 10:45 PM

Clowney is not eligible for the draft for 2 more years, he was(is) a true Freshman this year.

  26. eagles512 says: Jan 16, 2013 11:01 PM

Still don’t get the Lurie comments about him not spending and only caring about money. He has always been more than willing to spend.

  27. howiefeltersnatch says: Jan 16, 2013 11:04 PM

Grantham was DC here in Cleveland in 2005-2006 (I think) and he was terrible

  28. cured76 says: Jan 16, 2013 11:15 PM

Todd Grantham coached in the NFL for 11 years, most recently as the Cowboys’ defensive line coach. He isn’t fresh fish out of college.

  29. brento1499 says: Jan 16, 2013 11:26 PM

“Shouldn’t someone on the staff have NFL experience?”
errmmmm grantham has been the d-line coach for four different nfl teams

  30. canadianbucsfan says: Jan 16, 2013 11:29 PM

    Grantham in the picture

“You blow you’re coverage one more time, and you’re getting a punch right in you’re fu***ng chin”

  31. polapea says: Jan 16, 2013 11:34 PM

Good luck. With the amount of time the D is going to be on the field he’ll need it.

What no one is talking about is the impact Kelly’s offensive pace has on the D. If the O gets stymied the D is screwed and will wear down.

I just don’t see his style being sustainable for 16 games + playoffs. Players are older and less players on a roster could make it tough.

Oh thank you very much for teaching me that having a name like Olaf is all it takes to be successful in the NFL no wonder The Eagles never had a winning record under some one named Andy(SIC)

I can’t believe some of the idiots in this thread are fellow Eagles fans. Please disregard the vocal lunacy.

  34. dallascowboysdishingthereal says: Jan 17, 2013 8:21 AM

The Eagles are putting together a nice college football coaching staff. Too bad they have to play in the NFL.

  35. bizmooner says: Jan 17, 2013 10:47 AM

I was open to Chip maybe being able to work as a head coach for Eagles but I see its looking dim already with him targeting a college defense of coordinator which is insanity! Chip needs a defense guy like Lovie Smith or heavy hitter NFL guy so he can focus on offense! Look at Wade Phillips and what he did for the Texans defense!! Chip’s NFL career won’t last two years if he’s not smart enough to surround himself with experience and brilliance!

  36. seanpbeck says: Jan 17, 2013 11:18 AM

    Hey Chip,

Be careful. If you start losing games, Grantham will be angling for your job. Romeo Crennel might be one phone-call you make before hiring this guy. Just sayin’

I’m really not sure how I feel about this besides being very surprised at the turn of events. He is a great football mind. Can he adjust to coaching men who make more money than him? Will he keep Vick? (Hope not) I hope he utilizes Foles and adjusts to his skills which any good coach can do. Who will be his DC? I hope we draft the stud from Texas A and M to protect who ever is under center. Go birds.

I would love for Philly to draft him to, but we all know the coach with the #1 pick loves taking O-linemen in the 1st round. Jarvis Jones wouldn’t be a bad a bad pick at #4 tho

I ll make this short. Grantham is exactly what we need. The Birds would be lucky to get him. Lots of NFL experience. Genuine tough guy. Extremely knowledgeable.
