Once again the idiots appear! Yes Payton did appeal. No, there is zero evidence of any actual wrongdoing. Yes there was a pay for performance program - 31 other teams had them too, in one form or another. Allegedly the NFL told the Saints to stop their "bounty" program. If they didn't have a bounty program, there was nothing to stop. And Drew Brees demands and explanation because there is STILL NOTHING from the NFL to justify the punishments handed out. Get a clue, idiot posters!

'Tis a sad state of affairs in this country when so many are so ready to display their ignorance just because they hide behind a keyboard!

Actually the season is technically not over until after the Super Bowl. Just like the MLB season is not over until after the World Series and so it is with all the other sports. So that being said he probably will have to wait until right after the Super Bowl to be reinstated.

You forgot to mention that reinstating him now, and announcing it was Goodell’s decision to do so, will go a long way in helping Goodell remain safe while in New Orleans for the Super Bowl

I'm a life long Saints fan and I'm originlly from New Orleans. And, I like the rest of Saints fans love our team. But, I think it's time that we move on from this. I will always believe that we were wronged just as the thier fans that believe the Saints got what they deserve. The one thing I refuse to believe as angry and passionate as our fans are, none of us will do anything that would put another human being in danger over something as irrelevant as a game. We'll be back next year. Sense we were blocked from taking it in the big easy, we'll take it in the big apple next year. But, in the mean time I promise all fans RG can come to New Orleans and do what he has to do. We won't like it but well show the class that many of those we trashed us this season didn't show

lezmaka says:Jan 16, 2013 2:20 PM

What was the ACTUAL suspension?

Was it for the remainder of the Saints season? The remainder of the NFL season, meaning after the Super Bowl? Until the end of the league year which is usually early March? Or 1 calendar year meaning it would end March 31 (if I remember the suspension started April 1).

Whatever the ACTUAL suspension was, that is what he should serve. If I remember correctly, he didn’t appeal. Can players that don’t appeal a suspension, petition for early reinstatement after that suspension has started?
------------------------------------------------------
Got to love ignorant people that make ignorant post.. ALL parties involved appealled their suspension with the exception of Greg Williams.. The difference is the players had the support and backing of the NFLPA, whereas coaches and the organization do not.

Jonathan Vilma's defamation of character lawsuit is still pending and, we haven't heard a peep about where things stand on that front.

One speculation is that Goodell is using Payton's continued suspension as leverage to get the organization to persuade Vilma to drop it.

That, or maybe it's Roger just being mean.

A reasonable man would have ended this already.

To address some prior comments:
Payton did appeal.
Also, Payton's suspension after doing some research was for the 2012 season. The 2012 season was over after week 17 (as we've entered the post season) it was not 1 year, not 1 league year. It was for the 2012 season which ended when post season began. As another poster pointed out, most teams have already started prepping for 2013. Leaving Payton suspended is a sham, he should have been reinstated weeks ago!

Still would like to know exactly what he did that meritted a suspension. Goodell said that he and Loomis lied, but they've both denied this without further elaboration. Goodell is a proven liar so that claim should be taken with a grain of salt. Payton did file an appeal, but his was heard by Goodell, so no surprise it was denied.

Tagliabue reviewed only the players appeals and ruled that there were no violations that allowed for suspensions. The Saints were basically "guilty" of allowing locker room trash talk (Tagliabue did state that he could have issued fines, but ultimately determined that none were meritted). Again, what did Payton really do that meritted being suspended for a year?

Chip Kelly, Andy Reid, Doug Marrone, Mark Trestman, etc did not coach their new teams for the 2012 season but they are in the office now doing their job for the 2013 season in all practical reality. Payton should be allowed to do the same. But then again, Roger Goodell can never restore his reputation with the people of New Orleans, Saints fans will not accept an insincere apology and will not stop calling for a new credible commissioner to replace him, so maybe Goodell is cutting his losses and trying to push under a franchise that will permanently oppose him.

Here an explanation for Drew.

You play on a team that was told to stop doing something. The lied and covered it up. As a result you coach got suspended. During the whole thing you made your self out to be an arrogant idiot who lost respect from thousands. Regardless of what happened your coach lied to the NFL and took his punishment like he should of. The reason everyone now dislikes you is because you could not admit that your team did wrong. Well if an owner, GM, and coach can you should be able to as well.

Pretty sad that people will go to those lengths against Goodell, refs, players or any of the other targets we've seen threatened the last few years.

With what Tagliabue concluded, don't you almost have to continue punishing Payton for the bounty system. As a coach, and one of the individuals held soley accountable by the former commish, he should be held to the same standards as his former defensive coordinator. Sean Payton is a great coach, but he was the general who allowed his troops to continue acts that worked against the image of the NFL and were illegal (to the game).

Given that the Superbowl is in New Orleans, Goodell might want to solicit the good-will of the city's residents and potential volunteers by reinstating the coach of their football team.

If I remember correctly, he didn't appeal. Can players that don't appeal a suspension, petition for early reinstatement after that suspension has started?

Tagliabue basically ruled that players shouldn't be suspended because the responsibility falls on the coaches. In that case, Peyton should definitely be required to serve the entire suspension.

What does it matter that it might affect more a single season? The bounty program (which hasn't been ruled as never happening) went on for several years.

Let's say all NFL teams were doing the same thing. The Saints were stupid enough to continue and eventually get caught after the NFL had already investigated once. Same thing with the Patriots and Spygate. Memos were sent out to all teams as reminders and the Patriots were stupid/arrogant enough to continue and they got caught.
